One of many shows at the Cleveland Agora that I attended in the early '70s. Never knew who would show up to perform with the headliner. The magic of R-N-R then still remains. One of THE best stations then was WMMS! Had these lunch break concerts also. Many can knock C'Town, but cannot when it comes to vintage Rock-N-Roll!

Man, this was a great night! As I wrote on "I Don't Want to go Home", my friends and I went to this show because we'd just seen Bruce recently. As we waited to get in, a photographer took our picture. Its now on the cover of, and again inside "Rock and Roll Memories of Cleveland", a great book, btw. Anyway, after his Cleveland Coliseum show ended, Bruce had his limo take him to the Agora. We went ape sh.t when he walked onstage. What a night. There were MANY great Rock memories made in Cleveland
Bruce owns this song. He was laying back after just having performed a 3+ hour concert just prior. This is a SSJ gig and Bruce let him do his thing. Having seen both Bruce and Southside perform from their early days at the Upstage in Asbury Park I can tell you that SS was always in Bruce's shadow because he never did his own thing - he imitated Bruce....a lot.....even to the point where people would be yelling "Bruce" when Johnny was singing.
6:30 the moment Bruce took control. Love this song! Great vid, thanks for posting. Southside and The Jukes definitely do it better live, even if i prefer Bruce's recorded version over Southside's.
Incredible, incredible song. For the record, Springsteen never performed this circa 70's. 80's, and 90's. While he wrote it, "Fever" has always been Johnny's. And with all respect, Springsteen can't sing it or deliver it like John.
@chandrahvj While I have been a HUGE fan of Bruce's for 29 years I will tell you after I watched THIS video 4-5 yrs ago, I gained a whole lot of respect for SJ. BUT with out the poet who wrote it SJ has never wrote ANYTHING comparable!! And this is'nt even Bruce's BEST piece of work!!
I think I am correct in thinking that Bruce gave this song to SS and SS was blown away as he thought it was one of Bruce's best - I also think SS sings it better than the Boss :)
I saw bruce with a very good friend at the Theater for the Performing Arts in New Orleans in 1977, I think - the same week he hit the cover of Time and Newsweek. He was awesome. My friend knew who he was. I didn't. Was totally blown away by Bruce, the band entirely, Clarence, et al. The tickets were crazy - $5 or $7. Something totally crazy. :)
Springsteen is a Living National Treasure. So very few are like him.
This is awesome. I love BRUCE and have always been a huge Southside Johnny fan as well. This would have been the top of my bucket list; seeing these guys play this laid back. It looks like it was at the Stone Pony or maybe even at Bar Anticipation in Belmar as the stage looks bigger than the Pony.
Southside Johnny may have learned to regret these guest appearances by Bruce. I saw Southside a couple times in the early 80s in Jersey and the crowd was calling for Bruce between just about every song...which of course sounds like boooos.
@camelgirlll Southside came out with a Greatest Hits CD It might be hard to find but well worth it every song on it worth it's weight I' ve been a fan since I saw them at the Stone Pony in Asbury
It don't get no more soulful than this. Does anyone have the bootleg of Bruce's demo made for Johnny to learn this from? I have loved this song as far back as I can remember. If this don't give you chills you're already dead!
southside johnnys voice is so soulful , hes white so fuckin wot, brilliant ,what you on wiv tryin to sound black hes always sounded like southside johnny ,jim davidson tries to sound black doin chalkie white
I HAVE(I AM A SPRINGSTEEN FAN) to say I was NOT a fan nor did I dislike SSJ (hadnt listened to much of his stuff) but after seeing these two together, I AM NOW A FAN. R.I.P DANNY!!!
Truly one of the most memorable club shows I ever was lucky enough to experience right up front. Bruce had a blast on stage singing his song that Johnny covered o sooooo well. Khavian, please read about Shuggie Otis and what he said on the subject. Puts it all into perspective just as Iggriffin did so eloquently. These two guys sing from their hearts under no pretense of anything else. What comes out supersedes race, my friend. In this case, it was a great performance of inner soul.
Do you suppose people thought that Nat King Cole, one of the most talented, most gifted singers of all-time, was trying to sound white when he was singing the old standards. Or do you think that people just listened and enjoyed... as they realized that he had a set of pipes that produced a unique and most incredible sound?
There is only 2 black guys that could sing R&R can you name them? I can't tell you how many times I heard a singer sing and thought they were black but come to find out they were white. Example Joss Stone.
and what about Snoop Dog "trying to sound white" with his new country song!?!
Why do you have to separate music into a racial issue? The whole point of music is to express one's soul. Your skin is black or white. Your soul has no distinction.
And I have to add that "these cats" show more soul than any "black music" does today!
did SS write the fever? he is really amazing, i'm a die-hard bruce fan but damn has he got charisma...i was watching him and not bruce during the entire video
@LuckyGraveyardBoots... Bruce wrote this in 1971, but didnt record it until 1973. It was supposed to be on the Wild, Innocent E Street Album, but never got on. In 1998 it finally hit the "18 Tracks" album......
Southside put it on his album in 1976. It was two minutes shorter than Bruce's version.
@LuckyGraveyardBoots SSJ was pretty damn sexy in his day. This is one of may all-time favorite videos/versions of this song. I've listened to it a jillion times. Gorgeous, sexy, sexy, I love it!

@LuckyGraveyardBoots Yeah, and wow could he sing. Springsteen wrote it though, and that's the thing he's definitely got on Johnny. Johnny didn't write much of his music, as far as I know, while Springsteen... Well, you know.
Yeah, after all these years --- SS and Bruce still moves me... Sweet mother of mercy! I still got the fever. And it feels sooooooo damn good. Thanks SSJ and Bruuuuuuuuuuceeee.
great vid. While everyone knows that Conan's bandleader Max was/is from the E Street Band, did you know that Bamba the trumpet player (who does the "in the year 2000" voice)and the rest of the band on Conan are from the Asbury Dukes. Bamba's in the fedora in this video.
omg, what memories! feels like I was right back at this concert, it was awesome!!!!!!!!!! we were on table tops, everyone always left soaking wet from dancing, sure do miss the Agora !!!!!
The night Bruce played the Cleveland Agora for the 10 th Anniversary show...I went to see Crosby, Stills, and Nash at the Richfield Coliseum, but only through default. I got to hear the last 40 minutes of it coming out of CS&N. It was the best of both worlds Those were the days! What an incredible show Bruce put on that night. I wonder if there's more footage out there amongst us Youtubers? If so please post or let me know.
I'm from Cleveland & CSU at this time, AUG78. I saw Bruce at the Coliseum and after he left he went straight to the Agora to jam with Southside. These are great vids from that night. Been there, seen them, at the Agora for the Real Music. JJ
Bruce and his band played a live concert broadcast there in August '78 for WMMS's 10th anniversary as part of the "Darkness" tour. If it was around that time, then Steve and Bruce being there that night would make sense.
Several years later, Southside and the Jukes played Blossom Music Center with Clarence Clemmons and his band, "The Red Bank Rockers" as the opening act. Rumors were rampant that Bruce was going to make a "surprise" appearance at the show, but he didn't.
SJ voice sounds like too much coke. Springsteen's vocals blow him away on this to me. It lags when Bruce isn't singing, that vocal at 7:00 shows the star BS is.

I don't know the NJ boys that well but Southside's voice sounds like too much coke to me, Springsteen blows him away on this song, it lags when SJ sings to me. Those notes at 7:15 by Springsteen, a star is born if he wasn't one already by then.
Yeah, but you know what ... it's the family ... Bruce, Southside, Miami Steve ... the guys that preached the Jersey shore sound ... I grew up soaking it in the late 70s into the 80s in Asbury Park. Doesn't matter who sings better or who wrote what ... you had to be there to really understand how it all came together.
No offense to Bruce, he writes great songs, has a great band, etc. :-) but he was never a match for Southside in the vocal dept. Not here, not in "It's Been a Long Time" or anywhere else!

By the way thx for the video weirdcritter...and dude ignore the dipshit BRUCE KNOW-IT-ALLS..i dont think bruce will lose sleep over the peggy lee ,,,the fever vs. fever..or 3 hr plus...debates
only thing worse than an old springsteen know it all..is a new springsteen know it all.....who really gives a shit ..if bruce ever saw these posts hed piss on himself laughing..freaking arguments...
Great, love this song and video. I once saw an interview with ssj on tv. He told Bruce offered him this song. SSJ couldn't believe it because he thought this song to be one of Bruce's best ("are you sure?"), but then "just took it and ran for it" in case of second thoughts (by Bruce)
Thanks for the insult. Please just enjoy the music. Or not. And yes the band did play for over 3 hours at Shea on the last night of The Rising Tour - something I should have remembered as I was there. So maybe you are right I am 'retarted' ;-)
First this is NOT a BRUCE or SSJ song, it was made famous by PEGGY LEE in the late 50's I believe. Second, for all u people out there who thinks Bruce doesnt know HOW to have fun with music anymore, GO SEE HIM LIVE THEN come back and tell me that. Even at 50+ the man STILL plays 3+ hours. Artist half his age cant even say that.
SORRY on both counts guy, look it up IS NOT ann original SPRINGSTEEN song(ie HE DID NOT WRITE IT) AND YES I saw HIM 3 YRS AGO in TAMPA and it WAS OVER 3 HRS
I never realised the influence the Jukes had on Springsteen..I'd read about it...but boy, Springsteen seems to have taken on so much from these guys...the singing stlye is so similar, the overall sound..it;s great...but a shock to a Springsteen fan who thought he was somewhat an original.
Even though this is Bruce's song, I can't pick a favourite between the Bruce and Southside versions. Both are great, which is why seeing them sing this song together is a thrill for me.
Southside sings in such a similar way, and the way it similar...because this isn't the E Street band, right? So Bruce has still taken a lot, but I showed by ignorance....this is a Bruce song...I was under the impression that this was originally a S.J song...not sure why...thanks for correcting me!
Mr Springsteen used to live with my sister. He promised her a restaurant when he made the money...Well, he made the money but she still waits for her restaurant.
Tribute. Bruce knew that this would become a benchmark song for Southside Johnny Lyons and the Jukes...Still some of the same Jukes filling the wall of sound like Eddie Mannion on Bari and LaBamba on bones and doing the choreography. Classic clip...Kid Leo loved Johnny and the Jukes were as big in Cleveland as they were on the Shore
I wish I was born in a different decade. I really wish I had been in my early '20s when Springsteen was playing the clubs...thanks for the video!!! Bruce is like a hero to me :-) Rock and roll music makes me happy!
If you were around this scene in Cleveland in the late 1970s, you might remember Murray Saul's "Get Down" on WMMS on Fridays at 6PM. If you want to see and hear one check out videos by albydipped.
well to be fair ssj wasn't loaded - rather, he was in the finale of his agora show. otoh bruce had come from his own earlier show, but had cleaned up. the vid is cool to see, but to be honest it kind of drags along. this clip was the formerly unseen end of the weekly 'onstage at the agora' tv show. bruce did not want to allow his parts on tv at the time so it sat in the can for all these years, i am surprised the tape survives. earlier was a great jukes show too, that part was def televised.
Wow! For us old time Springsteen fans this brings back some wonderful memories of the club scene before the word mortgage came into our vocabulary. Watching the video and knowing how history has played out over the last 30 years, its interesting to see the playful young Springsteen have a goodtime on stage with the Big Man and Miami Steve, then to contrast the sweaty somewhat loaded looking Southside who would look through his wet hair distancing him from the chosen one -- BRUUCE!

The Fever is written by Bruce Springsteen. "Fever" is a different tune. Originally by Little Willie John and popularized by Peggy Lee.
But whatever!
GOD DAMN! JERSEY IS IN THE HOUSE!

Rita Moreno does a great version on the Muppet show. Check it out on You Tube. it's pretty funny.

Great, love this song and video. I once saw an interview with ssj on tv. He told Bruce offered him this song. SSJ couldn't believe it because he thought this song to be one of Bruce's best ("are you sure?"), but then "just took it and ran for it" in case of second thoughts (by Bruce)

you guys are retarted - it is Bruce's song and yes he still plays 3+ hours with the e st band. not open to debate
ucdtim17 4 years ago 3
Thanks for the insult. Please just enjoy the music. Or not. And yes the band did play for over 3 hours at Shea on the last night of The Rising Tour - something I should have remembered as I was there. So maybe you are right I am 'retarted' ;-)

@weirdcritter -you're not retarded-lol. These 2 are great together!

This IS a Bruce Springsteen song. It is not the Peggy Lee 'Fever'. I agree with your second point... except he doesn't do 3hr + shows these days ;-)
weirdcritter 4 years ago
SORRY on both counts guy, look it up IS NOT ann original SPRINGSTEEN song(ie HE DID NOT WRITE IT) AND YES I saw HIM 3 YRS AGO in TAMPA and it WAS OVER 3 HRS
hugebrucefan 4 years ago
WELL a man is a man if he can admit he was wrong. You are right ,is not a the peggy lee VERSION. But i wont budge on the 3 hr concerts saw it myself

Was the tampa show you saw on the Rising Tour (2002) or The Devils and Dust tour (2005)?

SSJ & the Jukes wouldn't have a career without Bruce - half their songs are his. Bruce was Bruce long before the Jukes existed
ucdtim17 4 years ago 2
I never realised the influence the Jukes had on Springsteen..I'd read about it...but boy, Springsteen seems to have taken on so much from these guys...the singing stlye is so similar, the overall sound..it;s great...but a shock to a Springsteen fan who thought he was somewhat an original.

Even though this is Bruce's song, I can't pick a favourite between the Bruce and Southside versions. Both are great, which is why seeing them sing this song together is a thrill for me.
weirdcritter 4 years ago
Southside sings in such a similar way, and the way it similar...because this isn't the E Street band, right? So Bruce has still taken a lot, but I showed by ignorance....this is a Bruce song...I was under the impression that this was originally a S.J song...not sure why...thanks for correcting me!

Goose bumps & a big smile!
That's the way it was when NJ was the center of the music universe.
And the Jukes still bring it...I see them every chance I get. Musically, they're even a much better band.
Too bad Springsteen seems to have forgotten that music is supposed to be fun.

Anybody know why Bruce would not want the public to see the video with his part? It's so much fun to watch and listen to the song.
belitnakoff 5 years ago
well to be fair ssj wasn't loaded - rather, he was in the finale of his agora show. otoh bruce had come from his own earlier show, but had cleaned up. the vid is cool to see, but to be honest it kind of drags along. this clip was the formerly unseen end of the weekly 'onstage at the agora' tv show. bruce did not want to allow his parts on tv at the time so it sat in the can for all these years, i am surprised the tape survives. earlier was a great jukes show too, that part was def televised.

Asbury Jukes are my all time favorite band. Kids may age like All that metal, but I still love Southside
