I've got a book called Underground Manchester by Keith Warrender which has a section about the canal in it....this video has made the book so much clearer.
I have been down here on the underground Manchester tour and it is a fascinating experience, in your pics it shows the dock full of water but it is fully drained now except at the far end just before Granada Studios.
The tour cost just £12.00 and lasts about 2 hours but it was well worth the money.
The steps in your pics which lead to the surface are in a terrible state now and are starting to erode but the feeling of people running up and down these steps during an air raid is very real.
Only one tunnel was completed. Various things have been suggested for the tunnel from nightclub to 'an underground experience'. The tramway route is already established on the surface and unfortunately the canal tunnel goes in the wrong direction. The biggest problem is that the tunnel in its lower levels floods. KH
I got a bit lost with the maps. Which is the new canal tunnel as there are two? Can this be used as tram tunnel in any way, as it runs under the GMex. Taking trams under the centre on manchester must a bonus.
If it were me, I would clear out the tunnels and re flood them and make a tourist attraction by giving tourists rides through them, giving them the history of the times..
I love this sort of stuff.. Thanks for the video.
its great seeing what is hidden under manchester.i worked at victoria station for 5 yrs and i went underneath platform 3 and there is loads of secret tunnels with old railway offices and a massive belfast oven to keep the station bulding warm.there is hidden platforms under the m.e.n arena. when you go on to platform 6 you can see that there hidden behind the sandstone brick walls.you have to walk east to the end of platform 6 and there is a entrance.keep up the good work manchester needs it.
@balenogs1 My dad took me into the Nuclear Shelters under manchester when he worked fro the then GMC. Theres 3 entrences the one we went down is under the old GMC office on portland st
Love it. Very interesting, found some interesting areas working as an apprentice in Manchester (very nosey) under the old Royal infirmary..

Nice small documentary! It's a shame that these sort of great builds are almost gone.
