Gheorghiu is better because she can also act and she has passion in her singing. Netrebko only stands there and sing and look pretty. She knows nothing of true opera - which is to act with the voice and become the character you're portraying!

You know, Gheorghiu and Anna N. are my favourite modern Violettas ever, both are good performers!! But I like Gheorghiu better too... Maybe just because I'm already used to her version (1994).
i can't sing it, but i know several sopranos wich could sing this aria better then anna!
for example: gheorghiu.i cannot understand the hype about netrebko, she is a very good singer but not the one and only soprano.a diana damrau, natalie dessay and some others are so good as netrebko and in some roles better then anna!
Traviata - Ms. Netrebko displayed ample power, coloratura bravura with a marvelous tone Having recently heard Natalie Dessay sing Sempre Libera at the Met Gala, one was impressed by the legato nature of Netrebko's portray in contrast to Dessay's intentional staccato, fragmented phrasing interpretation. Having also seen photos of Fleming in her current Violetta at the ROH, one can only marvel at Netrebko's resilience, endurance and commitment to bel canto opera.

I love an opulent traditional staging, but when contemporary staging and direction truly serves the music and the libretto (as is also the case with Robert Wilson's Parsifal) I am won over completely - especially here w/ opera's premier duo !
still with the variety of tones???You are amzing, now i don't need to read your comments, you say allways the same things.IF smth doesen't goes perfect can be understandable but to say everything is terrible....cmon that is not normal at all.
Nertebko haters do not care about the quality of her performances. They trash everything of hers under condition of anonymity. The good thing is that everyone already knows their names (thrugman30, esradesso etc) and the longer they do that the more pathetic they look. Anna is going GREAT and her voice has doubled in the last couple of years. So, respond to their insulting comments, when you can, and haters would not feel in a safe heaven (like Taliban before 2001).
donny558 , Anna is great in this aria, she does it wonderfully! ! If you do not get this I'll explain - Violetta is dying here, so it is wrong to sing at fulll voice here. Understand?
I completely agree, she's acting as well as singing and the vibrato and slight weakness is a strength to her version as opposed to a weakness. She does this aria wonderfully and credibly.
These singer really have to be the best physical health to sing the death arias. I love how that clock was broken showing how her time has run out gotta love the classics being redone :)
it's one of the best violetta in traviata modern... she is magnific, superb voice, excellent acting... when i look traviata in DVD with anna netrebko, i cry everytime at this passage...
She sings this part so beautifull! I have been to la traviata six times, but this own is the best! The man who is singing also, has also a great voice1
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Erm...singers have managed to convey Violetta's illness WITHOUT gasping for breath. (Netrebko's legato line has always been choppy and she always breathes at the wrong places) Listen to Callas, Ponselle, Zeani, Cotrubas...none of them needed such artificial tricks.
I think this version of la traviata is wonderful. It's going to be an historical performance. I found the simple decore very beautiful. I don't understand why people are conservative about this.
Is a whobbly vibrato also part of acting? LoL How about going off pitch? Is that to put more emphasis on Violetta's tuberculosis? Get real people. Don't let the facade fool you!.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
BTW, Yes, I know she is dying of TB... But her voice here is just airy and shrill besides the gasping... I just mean... there are better videos of Anna on YouTube. Before she lost her voice.
It called acting, she has to gasps for aire! beaucause she has tuberculosis! It would look weird if she could sing while having no air...wouldn't it??
Well, she looks fantastic and she sounds very decent. The problem is that people expect her to sound as good as she looks... and THAT would be off the charts in the opera world.
I do agree with your comments 2 and 4. Visually it is stunning, but is this La Traviata?
At least she is a believable Violetta - a woman, who men would PAY to sleep with. No man would pay to sleep with ladies who look like Callas, Caballe, Sutherland and company -They do sound damn good though. At the end of the day, it's a toss up. If you don't like her, don't listen to her.

Just horrible is your knowledge of opera.
You do not know from what you speak and should only find out before you make such a silly comment.

she did not make the high note at the end of the aria before the iteration. just terrible.
lxr0913 2 years ago
Everything is terrible. She has no depth, no variety of tones, very poor enunciation of the lyrics and no precise control of dynamics.
thugman30 2 years ago
still with the variety of tones???You are amzing, now i don't need to read your comments, you say allways the same things.IF smth doesen't goes perfect can be understandable but to say everything is terrible....cmon that is not normal at all.
alrudina 2 years ago
For me, everything sounds terrible in the sense of Opera. It sounds great for Popera with a bad enunciaiton.
thugman30 2 years ago
oops, I gave you the thumbs down by mistake...my apologies..I agree with you :)

don't worry, i should have make clear that it was an answer to thugman30 who besides saying stupid things says allways the same.

This isn't a proper Verdi. She's too over rated.
ccsabin 2 years ago 3
Very well sung and i like the production, very simple but effective.Such a sad aria...i love La Traviata...Verdi was a genius!

That explains, her speaking voice wears a nose clip too.

her voice is too small here
donny558 2 years ago
donny558 , Anna is great in this aria, she does it wonderfully! ! If you do not get this I'll explain - Violetta is dying here, so it is wrong to sing at fulll voice here. Understand?
sorkin777 2 years ago
I completely agree, she's acting as well as singing and the vibrato and slight weakness is a strength to her version as opposed to a weakness. She does this aria wonderfully and credibly.
mangostars 2 years ago 2
I have looked at 10 of these and Netrebko's acting and artistry is still the outstanding performance.
chugga07 2 years ago 5

EvaFlorence95 3 years ago 3

Sorry, but she is maybe good, but not that good. She is on averageand her perfomance not but standard. Nothing exceptionally.

These singer really have to be the best physical health to sing the death arias. I love how that clock was broken showing how her time has run out gotta love the classics being redone :)

I think she is a fab actor.

I will enjoy her voice in th Opera House in San Francisco next June and can't wait. Such a beautiful voice.
mfelipe62 3 years ago 4

There seems to be a lot of singing that imitates people in mental institutions. This is supposed to be acting but it's really just gimicky
singerjen212 3 years ago
She sings this part so beautifull! I have been to la traviata six times, but this own is the best! The man who is singing also, has also a great voice1

This Traviata must have been so painful for Netrebko! All the high a notes crack! Terrible! She can't have a good technique!
Take Maria Callas, she was perfect!

A fine performance - the best I've seen yet from Netrebko but there are more than occasional intonation problems.

Elisabetta611 3 years ago
I think this version of la traviata is wonderful. It's going to be an historical performance. I found the simple decore very beautiful. I don't understand why people are conservative about this.

Is a whobbly vibrato also part of acting? LoL How about going off pitch? Is that to put more emphasis on Violetta's tuberculosis? Get real people. Don't let the facade fool you!.

her beautiful voice makes me cry!!!

Very good job! But Anna, you have to improve your italian... If you want I can teach you...

VIOLETTA HAS TUBERCULOSIS in La Traviata. If she gasps for breath, it adds to the drama. She is acting the part this time. Take a look at 00:54.

BTW, Yes, I know she is dying of TB... But her voice here is just airy and shrill besides the gasping... I just mean... there are better videos of Anna on YouTube. Before she lost her voice.
EricDeChangy 3 years ago
She does a good acting... and she is not soooo bad, my goodness.
QuiRan82 3 years ago 6
It called acting, she has to gasps for aire! beaucause she has tuberculosis! It would look weird if she could sing while having no air...wouldn't it??
pienniejj 3 years ago 4
1. "ppp" doesn't mean "as loud as you can possibly sing." Yes, this applies even if it's a high A.
2. Don't breathe in the middle of a slur. If you don't have the breath control for this, you probably shouldn't be singing Verdi at all.
3. Don't smile at the end of the saddest aria in this opera, even if you are already anticipating your obligatory "brava" from lecherous men.
4. This director still needs to be shot.
=)

Well, she looks fantastic and she sounds very decent. The problem is that people expect her to sound as good as she looks... and THAT would be off the charts in the opera world.
I do agree with your comments 2 and 4. Visually it is stunning, but is this La Traviata?
opera46 3 years ago 4
Anna Moffo. Look her up. Visually stunning AND probably sang the best Violetta ever.
KatherineXIX 3 years ago 3
Give it up already. Art is supposed to be about enjoyment not cricism. If you don't like her, don't listen to her, don't buy her albums.
opera46 3 years ago 5
At least she is a believable Violetta - a woman, who men would PAY to sleep with. No man would pay to sleep with ladies who look like Callas, Caballe, Sutherland and company -They do sound damn good though. At the end of the day, it's a toss up. If you don't like her, don't listen to her.
