just because people may critique music doesn't mean they have to be able to play themselves. I suppose according to that logic, one can't say good things about the performance either, right? cause if you don't play how can you know it's actually good? everyone has a right to their opinion-- and as they say, opinions are like elbows-- everyone has one.
This is a typical representative of today's competition prize winners - his sound is flat, his pulse is unsteady (he speeds up during runs and arpeggi then actually slows done before their final note), he annoyingly starts just about every note in a melody without vibrato, adding it later, he puts weight on notes that don't need it and disregards in notes that need it, he slows down or speeds up passage work according to convenience... the 18 year old Menuhin was miles ahead of this in 1934.
Im sorry, but slating this guy for style is just ridiculous. There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking liberties with a concerto like the paganini. It's a virtuoso showpiece. Listen to Heifetz or Menhuin and look at the score, there are cheeky little additions everywhere, its part of the fun. This isn't exactly serious music. He is actually pretty strict. Fantastic performance.
yup as he, himself, said "If I could sing I would have become a singer. But I'm not so now I have to do it through my violin'. Superb guy I have met him in person. He is really a down to earth guy with alot of potential.
I noticed something interesting. :) He has four fine tuners on his violin! Most advanced violinists have one, sometimes two but that's the first time I've seen four! Shows that having fine tuners isn't a barrier to producing good sound! :D
Well, I'm not the best judge for that seeing as I have two on mine but for him to get to this level with four fine tuners, I guess in some way, it doesn't really matter? I can't really tell much difference though. :) I'm still more of a beginner. :)
and by the way, he's still sexy.

The only thing we can say about this guy is about taste. But, without a doubt, he's a virtuoso.

I know how much practice it takes to play that much in tune, but his glissando is against the music...

Can someone please tell me the conductors name?

Very very very good. I think that he captures the rather eccentric Paganini style perfectly.

What a great performance!!
For all those who are not violinists, Paganini concertos are among the most difficult pieces ever written for the instrument!!

@AndromedaAiken Sounds good sound, but don`t you think, that without fine tuners his violin wouldn`t sound better ? :)

I guess taste is personal, but I really love the sound of this REAL musician. His Enescu was incredible hauntingly beautiful!
