This is actually such a dark song when you read the words. Marilyn Manson claims in his book (which had a ghost writer... so take it all with a grain of salt) that he heard the song while on acid, and it sounded to him exactly as he recorded it (~5 years later.)

So my feeling is as if the Eurythmics were waiting for a time when people could play the song "properly." It wouldn't have sold then, only hurt their careers, to play a dark song darkly. Only Cash could do it. ; - )
