Phenomenol post ... Al Michaels and Mike Eruzione telling the story is excellent ... I love also that the Russian players described their way of life. Government-sponsored magicians on ice...love that line
the Federation of Russia had the gold for years. when they were the Soviet Union they got four golds the US only got two that was until we beat them 4-3 in the Miracle On Ice game and on our home turf too. since then the Russians have tried to beat us 1992 at Albertsville they got the gold and we got the silver and hours before Gorbachave said that the Soviet Union was desolved and from that day forward it was known as the Fereration of Russia a name they had since Peter the Great.
I understand the desire to contextualize this great moment, yet the idea that this gold medal "brought us back" from despair, is a narrative that was written years later by people who didn't like Jimmy Carter (as someone who did NOT like Carter I can sympathize). The truth is, it was great to beat our Cold War rival at what they did best, but it did not bring back a national confidence on any level. That is all revisionist "poetry".
folks don't remember but this hockey game was unprecedented. Our country was in a bad way at the time and this event made "all" Americans feel better about our country. I do recall at the age of 9 when when my Dad asked me to watch the delayed broadcast. I did cry when the US team won and not ashamed to say. And it was the first time I ever heard the chat "USA'. The big man upstairs was surely looking down on those players ~~~
1956 Soviet Union 1960 United States 1964 Soviet Union 1968 Soviet Union 1972 Soviet Union 1976 Soviet Union 1980 United States Silver Soviet Union Bronze Sweden 1984 Soviet Union 1988 Soviet Union thats real dominance by the soviet union.at the 1980 olympics the soviets beat japan 16-0 1st round.2nd round they beat the netherlands 17-4.
Also 1992 The Commonwealth of Independent States won the gold. (They were the Unified Team....the last team all the old Soviet Republics competed as one). Just to continue the thread. 1994: Sweden, 1998: Czech Republic, 2002: Canada, 2006: Sweden and 2010: Canada.

in many countries(including mine) a lot of sportsmen are "technically" in the army or branches of police.

lemme guess, stormcrow was born after 1980, and had an unhappy childhood, and posted his rant after a bad day at work.
