@SuperCaTalon Well they can squirt poison. And some ants can blow themselves up to disable an intruder (search 'exploding ants borneo'). good stuff! :)
@InfiniteWorld Well, that would really do some impact on me. wouldn't it?? Man.. But I know that ants from different cultures or nations will attack each other, here somehow, they have a mutual thing going that I never saw before. So I am merely curious of how to make them charge on to each other.. If stepping on ten of each would start the war.
@derricaantonio Hard to say, maybe if you could get one of them to squirt out some alarm pheromone they might fight, but they seem to try pretty hard to avoid each other. Its a "mutually assured destruction" kind of thing.
These are two of the most brilliant ant species out there, the leafcutter ants are like master gardeners while the army ants are a living colony. This was awesome
I guess both species have evolved to detect the other's presence. The chemical trails each gives off must signal that. As much as each species would love to garnish the other for food they instinctively know that the other is so formidable that it just isnt worth it.
interesting! I wonder if these 2 species of ants are related enough to be able to communicate their needs, so as to not have to conflict with each other. army ants have a reputation for taking any animal or insect by force of numbers, you would thing they would want to kill the leaf cutters as extra booty, but seem to be happy to pass them by unmolested. very interesting
Absolutely fascinating (first i've heard of them). At first it seemed like a messy formation but I noticed the soldiers form a barrier wall, while the carriers continue through the middle uninterrupted. It's similar to the German blitzkrieg formations actually. = ) thank for this great video.

Leaf cutters may not seem all that threatening, but they do have machinery at their disposal that can cut an adversary in half. I'd rather be bitten by an army ant myself. That's probably the only reason that the foraging army would choose to act as if they weren't there. Self preservation instinct prevails, it would seem, even among the most selfless.

lmao at the little guy going back and forth with the leaf hahaha oh woah! and at 2:50 if you look an adult leafcutter ant picks up a baby one and saves it from the supply line... hahahaha if you look close there are two bigger cutter ants that go on ant "rescue" missions every now and again, saving others. hahahah
Wow. This is fascinating. We know the often outcome when two aggressive species of ant cross paths with competing interests. @unis2006 I never saw them fight. these standoff's happened all the time. They just stand around looking agro at each other. Usually the leafcutters found a way around and went on their way.
This is kinda stupid question. What's happening out there, i mean r leafcutters just surrounded till all army ants get off? very interesting, i thought there would be a big fight or something like that. Great video, i love army ants, coz they're just god damn interesting species.
@Aras0180 Good question... usually the leafcutters find a way around, they are kind of inexorable. But some times they just have to sit and wait there until the army ants have passed which can take hours. occasionally one of the leafcutters sneaks through the traffic blockage of the army ants and runs by.
I've spent some time in the Amazonas of Venezuela and seen this before.The army ants are not in "forage mode" but are concentrated on travelling. Remember, they have a hive mentality and don't make decisions on their own.Though I'm sure they would wipe out the leaf-cutters in forage mode it would be one hell of a fight, leaf-cutter soldiers are huge and quite formidable .
@300minus This is a foraging trail of the army ants. The army ants and leafcutters don't fight because it would be carnage for everyone so the leafcutters just wait it out until the ants are done passing
Well said. There is nothing to win for both colonies. And despite what most people believe; the big major army ants are only there for show off and function more for food storage and heavy lifting. @InfiniteWorld Hey mate,amazing video to say the least.Do you know do ants make noises,i know it probably wouldnt be heard by humans but would they make noises at each other or any other sort of communication.Probably a stupid question i know,hence im imagining you laughing as you read this.
@1984ioc@1984ioc Actually some ants do make sounds. When you make Bullet ants angry they make this loud clicking noise as they try to attack you. Apparently leafcutters make noises that humans can hear as well. Lefcutters also vibrate their jaws as they cut the leaves to stiffen them and make them easier to cut - kind of like using an electric knife.
To read an an article about ant sounds, Google: science news ants squeak

they really are amazing, just look at them how organized. including to the ones who stood there and protected they were others who kept marching up and down to push the leafcutter who made it almost throw back out. Its interesting how they not fought, its like they can think and have a political cold war and bothsides do not want to get into a all out war so none of them started to attack cause usually ants never backoff but yousee how the leafcutter sometimes run off in order not to create war
@williamm3889 im not gonna make fun of that comment cause its possible you're from an area that doesn't have army ants, but they are an unmistacable red colour, i will make fun of you however for not noticing that the black ones were carrying pieaces of leaves down the line...one would assume that would make them "leaf cutters"
@gratefulDeadHead1234 Absolutely not, Army Ants do not raid other nests, and purposely take their young. You are talking about Slave Maker Ants, but the Larva here is primarily Army Ant.
Ah first off to springhill1958 they will eat the leafcutter ant, its there favorite food the only reason why a swam of army ants wouldn't eat leafcutters is if one of the generals (using the army ant analogy here) had issued such orders cause he was old and senile. An no they wouldn't have a stare down contest the only way the leafcutters would win is if they outnumbered the Army ants...not impossible but unlikely.
Yes, but I saw one little suckers get passed them in the end. I think the army ants that are not letting them pass are doing this, because they are the soldier ants protecting the worker ants in the middle. The leafcutter ants pose as a threat to the colony . I have to make a little video of the ants that live in my area... they are big !!
Some traffic lights would help here..

Did you see how the army ants have guards on both sides of the "road"?
They do nothing but waiting there and everytime a leafcutter ant wants to cross the road the guard of the army ants stop them.
The leafcutter ants too have soldiers. That are the bigger red ants. But they did not start a fight.
These two kind of ants are no rivals. So it would not be worth it.

Leaf cutters may not seem all that threatening, but they do have machinery at their disposal that can cut an adversary in half. I'd rather be bitten by an army ant myself. @skulkid288 o ok, well there aren't really native to usa/

I don;t know which one is which, but the black ones were stealing the other's unborn babies and corpses, so i think the orange one lost

@gratefulDeadHead1234
Im pretty sure those were their own cocoons because Army ants have no nest so they always carry around their young
MrHewty1231 1 year ago
@gratefulDeadHead1234 Absolutely not, Army Ants do not raid other nests, and purposely take their young. You are talking about Slave Maker Ants, but the Larva here is primarily Army Ant.

Ah first off to springhill1958 they will eat the leafcutter ant, its there favorite food the only reason why a swam of army ants wouldn't eat leafcutters is if one of the generals (using the army ant analogy here) had issued such orders cause he was old and senile. An no they wouldn't have a stare down contest the only way the leafcutters would win is if they outnumbered the Army ants...not impossible but unlikely.
digafox 1 year ago
exactly springhill1958..
but i like the way the army ants didn't let the leafcutters pass.

@forfeiter
