  • Some traffic lights would help here..

  • nice video

  • its like starcraft

  • Zerglings!!!

  • i wonder what would hppen if these ants has nucleur/biological weapons?

  • @SuperCaTalon Well they can squirt poison. And some ants can blow themselves up to disable an intruder (search 'exploding ants borneo'). good stuff! :)

  • Did you see how the army ants have guards on both sides of the "road"?

They do nothing but waiting there and everytime a leafcutter ant wants to cross the road the guard of the army ants stop them.

The leafcutter ants too have soldiers. That are the bigger red ants. But they did not start a fight.

These two kind of ants are no rivals. So it would not be worth it.

  • a mexican standoff of tiny proportions

  • Who won ? lol

  • Poor dude with the leaf at 2:40 doesn't know where to go.

  • lol gangsta stare

  • I wonder what would have happened if you killed 10 of them on each side.. Would they attack each other?

  • @derricaantonio They would attack you

  • @InfiniteWorld Well, that would really do some impact on me. wouldn't it?? Man.. But I know that ants from different cultures or nations will attack each other, here somehow, they have a mutual thing going that I never saw before. So I am merely curious of how to make them charge on to each other.. If stepping on ten of each would start the war.

  • @derricaantonio Hard to say, maybe if you could get one of them to squirt out some alarm pheromone they might fight, but they seem to try pretty hard to avoid each other. Its a "mutually assured destruction" kind of thing.

  • @derricaantonio What do you think :3

  • wats wrong with ur cam. its so blurry

  • turn up the volume! I cant hear what theyre sayin!!!!!!!!

  • who is who?

  • @TheAttila5000 The fast ants running across the screen are the army ants

  • omg, look at the black ants. those kind of medium thats seperating the fast moving mob of black ants and the leaf ants. man they are like boss

  • Looks like rush hour on the 405

  • These are two of the most brilliant ant species out there, the leafcutter ants are like master gardeners while the army ants are a living colony. This was awesome

  • @Bioniclefan45 I totally agree. I feel very lucky to have spent so much time hanging out with both of these ants. They are totally cool.

  • *Rock falls down to ants*

    Queen Ant: TACTICAL NUKE INCOMING

  • Ant superhighways colide

  • "Leaves? We don't eat no stinking leaves!"

  • falcon312

  • I guess both species have evolved to detect the other's presence. The chemical trails each gives off must signal that. As much as each species would love to garnish the other for food they instinctively know that the other is so formidable that it just isnt worth it.

Too many other easy meals out there.

  • I fucked my Aunt. She was okay, not as good as my Uncle, but not bad. I think it's because she looks so much like my Mom.

  • They were like...... "Excuse me! Excuse me! sorry...... Excuse me!"

  • Just like the people, the army holds back the civilians, while making a path for there team.

Or, I can think of this way, Army Ants are the Locomotive and the Leafcutter are the Vehicles!

  • the ones in the center were having a staring contest

  • I"M LOST!! WHERE'S THE LINE!

  • Capture the leaf. :P

  • Horde vs Alliance f*cking Batlle Ground :)

  • im suprised they didnt start a fight, especially since none of them looks very happy...

  • play "only time" by Enya with this video XD

  • it's like Frogger on insane level.

  • Quick, someone give them gladiator gear

  • @hallowedgravy Ha, they have exoskeletons!

  • @InfiniteWorld how did you get this footage do you have a tank with them

  • @hallowedgravy the 300 SPARTANTS!!!!!!!! THIS IS SPARTANT!!!!

  • it looks like a big game of tag to me

    \

  • it needs.......EPIC BATTLE MUSIC!!!!

  • interesting! I wonder if these 2 species of ants are related enough to be able to communicate their needs, so as to not have to conflict with each other. army ants have a reputation for taking any animal or insect by force of numbers, you would thing they would want to kill the leaf cutters as extra booty, but seem to be happy to pass them by unmolested. very interesting

  • the big ant...is lik "i dare one of yall to come near me..just try it"

  • This would be great with a newsreader ant in front of the dramatic scene

  • starship troppers

  • That big fire ant in the middle is talking to 2 small black ants.

  • ants vs rats

  • i swear its freaky

  • Did anybody see the big ant with like 5 little ants killing by holding on to him at 1:00?

  • Man a woman war ground battle of the ants

  • Now that's what I call diplomacy.

  • @zillajratomicray Diplomacy via mutually assured destruction :)

  • @zillajratomicray ummmm. yah u need a hornet

  • spartans vs athenians

  • its nothing more than 3 leafcutters trying to intimidate a army ant

  • "COME AT ME BRO"

    "NO YOU COME AT ME"

  • Notice that the Army ants are holding a defensive line. I assume its for intimidation purposing only since no real fights broke out.

  • Absolutely fascinating (first i've heard of them). At first it seemed like a messy formation but I noticed the soldiers form a barrier wall, while the carriers continue through the middle uninterrupted. It's similar to the German blitzkrieg formations actually. = ) thank for this great video.

  • awww i wanted to see a fight :(. i had the popcorn ready and everything -_- ...

  • Man I have this strange temptatoin to stick my finger in there and see what would happen?

  • You should have put the lord of the rings music in there would have been perfect

  • Meanwhile, inside the Hive Ship...

  • why does this remind me of pikmin...

  • A real society.

  • damn some ants are big

  • WHY hasn't anyone called 9-1-1? WHY are you just sitting there filming it? Oh the carnage! The horror! Please do something! That one little fellow is getting his ass whipped and no one will HELP! Call 9-1-1 already! This is awful..I can't watch any more..you're all damaged...

  • Leaf cutters may not seem all that formidable, but they do have machinery at their disposal that can cut an adversary in half. I'd rather be bitten by an army ant myself. That's probably the only reason that the foraging army would choose to act as if they weren't there. Self preservation instinct prevails, it would seem, even among the most selfless.

  • lmao at the little guy going back and forth with the leaf hahaha oh woah! and at 2:50 if you look an adult leafcutter ant picks up a baby one and saves it from the supply line... hahahaha if you look close there are two bigger cutter ants that go on ant "rescue" missions every now and again, saving others. hahahah

  • dude, that was awesome... its a giant battlefield! hahaha and the leafcutters are an invading army!

  • Looks more like TRAFFIC WARS LOL

  • TONIGHT, WE DINE IN SIDEWALK!

  • Wow. This is fascinating. We know the often outcome when two aggressive species of ant cross paths with competing interests. What is unusual (it seems to me anyway) here is how they seem to work it out with only limited displays of aggression. Is this typical between these two species? Some of the posts seem to reflect that it is.

  • Those black ones run fast.

  • did you ever see them fight, or did this standoff happen every time?

  • @unis2006 I never saw them fight. these standoff's happened all the time. They just stand around looking agro at each other. Usually the leafcutters found a way around and went on their way.

  • This is kinda stupid question. What's happening out there, i mean r leafcutters just surrounded till all army ants get off? very interesting, i thought there would be a big fight or something like that. Great video, i love army ants, coz they're just god damn interesting species.

  • @Aras0180 Good question... usually the leafcutters find a way around, they are kind of inexorable. But some times they just have to sit and wait there until the army ants have passed which can take hours. occasionally one of the leafcutters sneaks through the traffic blockage of the army ants and runs by.

  • @InfiniteWorld Army ants are blind, they can only sense movement. Stand perfectly still for hours on end, and your safe.

  • why are starcraft references always top comments???

  • I've spent some time in the Amazonas of Venezuela and seen this before. The army ants are not in "forage mode" but are concentrated on travelling. Remember, they have a hive mentality and don't make decisions on their own.Though I'm sure they would wipe out the leaf-cutters in forage mode it would be one hell of a fight, leaf-cutter soldiers are huge and quite formidable .

  • @300minus This is a foraging trail of the army ants. The army ants and leafcutters don't fight because it would be carnage for everyone so the leafcutters just wait it out until the ants are done passing

  • @InfiniteWorld

Well said. There is nothing to win for both colonies. And despite what most people believe; the big major army ants are only there for show off and function more for food storage and heavy lifting. They are very vulnerable for attacks by smaller ant species and are mostly easily taken out. It's the smaller ants that do the fighting.

Great video by the way :)

  • which type of ant would win if they actually got in a large battle? I'm guessing the army ant because I've heard colonies of them can even over run small villages...

  • So who won? im guessn the leafcutters got ownd but hey i could be wrong.

  • 2:37 (bottom screen) lol they after his bigg ass lmao

  • add music its qiute boring whithout music...

  • haha this is cool to watch

  • 0:35-0:47

    Leafcutter: WHY HELLO CHAP.

    Army: EVENIN'.

Leafcutter: LET US STAND RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE IN EVERYONE'S WAY AND LOUDLY CONVERSE IN THICK BRITISH ACCENTS.

    Army: JOLLY GOOD.

    Leafcutter: TEA TIME.

    Army: FISH AND CHIPS.

    Leafcutter: MIND THE GAP.

Army: YOU BLOKES ARE A BUNCH OF WANKERS.

  • @timeparadox888 Just as a heads up, the vast majority of ants are female. ;)

  • @Timenova2 OI I FORGOT! WEE LAD NOW I BE IRISH! WHAAAAAA-

  • @Timenova2 OI WEE LAD NOW I BE IRISH FFFFFFUUUUUUU

  • Road rage!

  • Haha, 1:23 on the left you see a leafcutter with a leaf arrive and be

"Right I'll just take this back to the....oh shit"

  • Madness? THIS IS ANTVILLE!

  • Ant 1: Hey move, Ive got a wedding to go to.

    Ant 2: Problem?

    Ant 1: fffffffuuuuuuu -

  • You're probably thinking of slave making ants. Unlike other ants, slave making ants don't raise any workers, only soldiers. They just enslave other ants, kill the adults, hatch the colonies eggs and raise the new ants to be their slaves. Crazy stuff (for more info google: slave making ants)

  • @InfiniteWorld Slave making ants, are also called amazon ants i believe.

  • @InfiniteWorld

not all slave making ants are like this.

Some actually also work, depends on the species.

  • @InfiniteWorld

    sounds like americans

  • Do the army ants attack other ant colonies and kill their queen so rest of the colony work for them ??? i read that b4 from unreliable source, can you tell if that is right or not ?

  • God ants are so fucking amazing could spend all day learning about them... The way they work together and for their queen is just amazing. That red ant at the start is huge as well :D

  • Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Base under attack - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Base under attack - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Harvester under attack - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost - Unit lost -

  • Thats Mad11 :D

  • This is actually a really cool vid. You would think they would just tear each other up.

  • @Alewyshus Thanks. I spent 3 summers following these ants around and it was always amazing to watch them interact with the leafcutters - they totally look like linebackers trying to psyche each other out.

  • @InfiniteWorld Hey mate, amazing video to say the least.Do you know do ants make noises,i know it probably wouldnt be heard by humans but would they make noises at each other or any other sort of communication.Probably a stupid question i know, hence im imagining you laughing as you read this.

  • @1984ioc @1984ioc Actually some ants do make sounds. When you make Bullet ants angry they make this loud clicking noise as they try to attack you. Apparently leafcutters make noises that humans can hear as well. Lefcutters also vibrate their jaws as they cut the leaves to stiffen them and make them easier to cut - kind of like using an electric knife.

To read an an article about ant sounds, Google: science news ants squeak

  • only if we was like this.

  • Army ants are smart, look how some of them station to interrupt the other ants' highway. They totally control the crossroad.

  • It's almost as if the ants adopted a "Mutually Assured Destruction" policy. Like both species are aware of the consequences if they started fighting, so they just act standoffish toward each other and never actually become aggressive.

  • @Felamine Yeah, that's exactly what they do. A lot of animals do this b/c if they didn't they would just kill each other.

  • Why aren't the army ants attacking the leafcutters? I thought army ants tried to subdue and eat anything they could.

  • @hornetpalooza Army ants attack pretty much everything except other ants that can kill them. If the leafcutters and army ants had a war it would be total annihilation on both sides since they are both very fierce. so they just have an uneasy truce and move on.

  • 1:45 at the bottom of the screen. Schwarzenegger of the army ants (dark ants).

  • looks like the movie 300

  • this sounds stupid but.... are the leafcutter ant's butt red??

  • @asshole0465027451 The leafcutters are the light red/gold color, the army ants have the darker bodies and dark red butts. in other parts of Costa Rica the E Burchellii army ans are a lot darker, almost all black.

  • they probably mad a truce

  • haha neither one whants to attack

  • any1 else see the huge ass red ant at middle right about to take the little black ant's head off

  • Madddness???... THIS IS SPARTA!

  • The drones are stealing the others vespene gas

  • man its a zerg vs zerg on blistering sands XD

  • @thelittlemind and i was like banelings banelings banlings ooooooooooooh, like a deadly green land mine, mine

  • @squagglenater versus u i win with w/e lifting your buildings u sure are clever and i wanna keep my cool but u wont gg.. u gatta leave the game u gatta be less lame XD

  • biggest stare off

  • I loled at the two ants starring at each other

  • Is this light ever going to turn green?

  • reminds me of riot police

  • When i watched this all i could think on was Capulets vs. Montagues, cause im reading romeo and juliet in school. ahahahhaha

  • @skidemon511 thats so weird! we just finished that topic and i was thinking about the same thing !!!!

  • Isn't there one ant that explodes acid and causes the other ants to explode?

  • they really are amazing, just look at them how organized. including to the ones who stood there and protected they were others who kept marching up and down to push the leafcutter who made it almost throw back out. Its interesting how they not fought, its like they can think and have a political cold war and bothsides do not want to get into a all out war so none of them started to attack cause usually ants never backoff but yousee how the leafcutter sometimes run off in order not to create war

  • Holy shit two of the most ravaging ants.... NOT KILLING EACHOTHER???/!????111one777711????11??/777777seven???

  • They know there equals when they see them.

  • damm the army ants are well disiplined!! they just stood their pretecting the traffic

  • uhh whos who LOL

  • @williamm3889 im not gonna make fun of that comment cause its possible you're from an area that doesn't have army ants, but they are an unmistacable red colour, i will make fun of you however for not noticing that the black ones were carrying pieaces of leaves down the line...one would assume that would make them "leaf cutters"

  • @skulkid288 o ok, well there aren't really native to usa/

  • this is cool~~~ i think they should build a highway junction or a flyover here

  • Their just holding the line to help with the evacuation

  • I don;t know which one is which, but the black ones were stealing the other's unborn babies and corpses, so i think the orange one lost

  • @gratefulDeadHead1234

Im pretty sure those were their own cocoons because Army ants have no nest so they always carry around their young

  • @gratefulDeadHead1234 Absolutely not, Army Ants do not raid other nests, and purposely take their young. You are talking about Slave Maker Ants, but the Larva here is primarily Army Ant.

  • cool

  • Fucking ants...

  • The 38 parallel line.

  • Go ATTA!!!

  • This race war is going to explode any moment now...

  • Im sure its also very confusing with both ants leaving chemical trails probally gives out sorta mixed signals

  • Gang life is so hard for the ants.

  • Instinct dictactes that is a skirmish either side dosent want to be involved with...so much easier prey for the army ants.

  • I like the way none of them are fighting with the big mother fuckers in the middle

  • 0:35 chek out the monster leafcutterant on top right

  • NO NO NO our bite is worse!

  • Ah first off to springhill1958 they will eat the leafcutter ant, its there favorite food the only reason why a swam of army ants wouldn't eat leafcutters is if one of the generals (using the army ant analogy here) had issued such orders cause he was old and senile. An no they wouldn't have a stare down contest the only way the leafcutters would win is if they outnumbered the Army ants...not impossible but unlikely.

  • exactly springhill1958..

but i like the way the army ants didn't let the leafcutters pass.

  • @forfeiter

Yes, but I saw one little suckers get passed them in the end. I think the army ants that are not letting them pass are doing this, because they are the soldier ants protecting the worker ants in the middle. The leafcutter ants pose as a threat to the colony . I have to make a little video of the ants that live in my area... they are big !!

  • @SuperYos007

Woah! u gotta take a video of that man and show it to me.. i love seeing ants! i'll look forward to that.

  • man, they need traffic lights.

  • I like that one giant leafcutter that just stands there and stares down the gang of army ants by himself. Hardcore.

  • Army ants have the numbers and Leaf Cutter Ants have the power

  • I'm WALKIN' HERE!

  • 1:35 and the rest of the whole scene roght there. lol there are leaf cutters that are trying to get through but cant LOL

  • sometimes they fight? who win? probably army ant dude, right?

  • leafcutters owned them.

  • Stupid leafcutters! You leave those army ants alone!!!

Vandals, these leafcutters are nothing but vandals!
