MTV went on air August 1st , 1981 , I was 5 yrs old then, mom got cable installed near the end of that year around Christmas and I remember watching videos like this while other kids my age were watching cartoons, the music era back then was entirely different than today, that early 80s new wave sound was at that time "NEW" just as the label of that time implied, I've always thought how great it would've been had today's computers and internet existed back then when the music was so original
BlackSkyThunder There were ALOT of masterpeices written during the 80's that are STILL unknown today amongst most people. Like every era and genre the true masterpeices are largely ignored while the pablum and mass produced cookie cutter crud gets all the attention. Even through all that I'm still gratefull that I was a teenager in the 80's. Check out Siouxie and the Banshees sometimes, especially the song Forever.
Watching all this I feel very bad for not have lived the 80's nightlife( I was born in the 81'), could not imagine how happy I would have been if I had listened this track while I was just at my table looking to nothing, a music that invades you in every moment and makes you introspective at least for a moment while you are hearing some minute or just a second in a total apotheosis.
@BlackSkyThunder I was born in 1970.There were times where it sucked too but not too much.Another genius of that time that still doesn't get the credit that he deserves is none other than Robert Smith (The Cure).
I still love this band - the real music fans know them - everybody should hear this and "Life in the Gladhouse". They were GREAT live - as good as in the studio! thanks for posting
In truth, this band is very talented, and it's a shame they don't receive the recognition they deserve. It's Aug. 2009, and I still rock 80's fashion and music.
@psychocandychain Where, please tell me where?? I have not been to a good obscure 80's club in a long, long time. Everyone seems to play electro and the same setlist for new/darkwave music.
Brilliant! One of the best forgotten songs of the 80´s! This song clearly reflects the meaning of the 80´s: melodic, mysterious, elegant, paranoid, bizarre... a 5 star song! i´m from Spain and i can say that very very few people remember this song, Is it the same in England??
And don't worry, most people were just as confused about it as you were.
It was a trend for the early part of the 1980s to die your hair platinum, tease it out into a huge bouffant wave and wear candy-colored suits. For other examples of this (all of them male) see the early videos of Duran Duran, Japan, Kajagoogoo and Siouxsie and the Banshees.
And for a rare female example, check out Thompson Twins.
Que buen tema que pena que no este completo lo malo es que estos videos son escasos de encontrar ojala subieran mas de este tipo de musica NW 80's y 90'S Caletas
Awesome song! This song reflects the spirit of the 80´s, elegant, mysterious and fascinating... I can see me hearing this song while Chucky was on Cinema
this song was a huge hit in the 80, it was even better in the reunion concert in 2007.....how come their are no live videos of probobly the most popular bands in the 80s, some one needs to upload a video of modern english live!
I met these guys at about this time. They scared me. Live they sounded like being in an aircrash. Nothing at all like the slick production here. Their first three albums are all different and all great.
After the Snow is a great album, with excellent 80s musicanship. I especially liked the tracks, Face Of Wood and Tables Turning, but the whole album is great.
I had "after the snow" years ago (cassette form I think the dog ate) The whole album was great including this song which kicked it off!!! Thanks for the posting.

Modern English was a great band. video is typical 80s corporate look. But the band has a nice haunting sound to it

Not to be mean but that person in the white hair that's playing the guitar is that a chick or a guy?
Tktaylor91 2 years ago
That would be a guy.
And don't worry, most people were just as confused about it as you were.
It was a trend for the early part of the 1980s to die your hair platinum, tease it out into a huge bouffant wave and wear candy-colored suits. For other examples of this (all of them male) see the early videos of Duran Duran, Japan, Kajagoogoo and Siouxsie and the Banshees.

whoops! of course I meant to say "dye", not "die"
-- although in retrospect, "die" may have been the more appropriate word because all of that bleaching and teasing and gluing really ruined your hair!
Great song -- my favorite from "After the Snow" (which s one of my all-time favorite albums also).
