jacqueline du pré was actually not playing a cello .... she was able to give her soul (and at least my soul) the materiality of a sound , incredibly true . What we hear is something you cannot contest , because it is not an interpretation , but simply the truth .
This is a breathtakingly beautiful movement and a marvellous performance. Just listen how the soloist enters the fray at 1:08 with the whole orchestra and the sound grows... a masterpiece!
Am I the only one that hears the typical Mozartian slow movement melancholy here? Haydn really was a genius.
Simplement le meilleur violoncelle que j 'ai jamais entendu, une musicalité (j' ai presque envie de dire une sensualité) vraiment hors norme, incroyable, les mots me manquent ...
I'm not fan of Haydn, but this movement is very sensitive, romantic, ... The cadenza actually has rhythm and sounds of country o western music .. Beautiful piece
Hmm, interesting - I don't know enough genres to really voice a reliable view! It's perfectly good music in it's own right, but to my tastes I just prefer genres to stick to themselves really!
Well, I'm certainly going to get the complete du Pre set now! All those famous works on 17 CDs for about £20 (must be cos they're old) and all played by this indomitable artist! I'll be glad to have this version of this adagio too - the version I have has a really tasteless, Blues cadenza that doesn't tie in with the feel at all, and ruins it - thank goodness the rest of this recording is just as good, if not better, too!
@thelightisahead Are you referring to the blues cadenza on the Naxos recording? I can't remember the soloist, but I have that too and I hate it... obviously you can't go wrong with a du Pre boxset! But also I recommend Jian Wang's recording; sublime.
What a breath takingly beautiful piece of music. Jacki proved once again she and the cello are one. Her style and interpetation are so deep and soul stirring.
And what an excellent rendition! Even better than the one I know and love from the Naxos Best of Haydn CD... and usually it's hard to find a version better than the one you're long used to! Which says a lot about the quality of performance here!
Imagine being Haydn, or any other master composer... waking up each day being the person who could write pieces like this... you don't get it all in one life :( but at least it's here for us to enjoy!
soy de tu misma opinión. no toco el cello, pero al oirla siento como contiene su emoción o como le da rienda sueltas. es grandiosa. como puede expresar tanto.
yo yo ma doesnt have any emotion when he's playing. he just shows off when he plays. messes around with the music too much. wierd interpretations. i dont like him much.
It can be called perfect, perfect sound quality. She was holding a special cello that helped her to reach one of the highest. The aesthetic standard in mind is different from one to another, but in common in a gengeral basis. So is she likely to be popular among audience, who are easily to be infatuated with her graceful deep emotional performance.
No one can feel and tell what the composer felt at that very moment, but one can tranlate the comprehension of his own into the same, or a different form of art through a certain style of expression in emotion by instruments or other tools.
To be honest, I am more touched by the performance of Rostropovich, a complete development of the character of a cello.
Jacq. Nunca será suficiente el agradecimiento por todo lo que nos diste, tu música y TÚ INMENSA MAGIA. Donde quiera que estes y, a los que, te siguen escuchandote y viendote, les digo que que suerte tienen!!!

IMHO, this particular Adagio piece by Haydn, matches (maybe surpasses) anything Mozart ever did (and Mozart's my musical "God").

It is unfortunate that criticism becomes the forte instead of simply enjoying a lovely piece of music!

I sooooo agree with you. Moreover, how easy is it for those who sit at home on youtube to criticise, probably having never really studied music!

Haydn is far to overlooked. He is just as great as Beethoven, Bach and so on, in my opinion. This music is very moving, and great passion.
