This may be the most beautiful piece of music in the world and this is my favorite recording of it. I only wish that it was recorded with the full orchestra, not just the chamber.
What a purely beautiful expressive performance. I used to work for Andrew Marriner's father, Sir Neville Marriner, at the Minnesota Orchestra, 30 years ago now, in the marketing department. It is amazing to me to realize that I am now close to the age that Maestro Marriner was then, in my 50s! and his son Andrew plays so beautifully. I am very moved to hear this and think about the passing of time. I believe that music-making keeps us all young forever.
I don't personally conect with rap music, but it is very elitist to say that Mozart is "better" than rap music. Rap and Mozart do not serve the same purpose. I think it is safe to assume that many people who enjoy rap feel that classical music is irrelevant and pointless. It's all about the perspective that you come from - rap is very relevant to millions of people. If everything was the same what a boring uncreative world it would be!
this is the music of pure peace, of hope above all. this music makes me feel that anything is possible. it should be played to anyone who has lost faith
So I play the clarinet and I am playing this piece for my solo competition..... its a little slow to read which makes it harder but i think I can nail it in two months :D this definetly helped me!!
Oh dear , he makes me cry, he really touches all my nerves and neurons. Now I feel like it is not that bad to think about playing clarinet!. He has convinced me!!
Neville Marriner Was one of the best Mozart conductors there ever was! This is the most beautiful version I have heard of this Part!! And Andrew Marriner his is playing as if he had known this piece all his life!! You can realy tell that this is one of his Favourite pieces to play. So emotinal and full of deep soul. And what a great tempo they have choosen here , so singing and dreaming at the same time. BRAVO.
I heard this piece for the first time a couple of months ago, and was instantly moved by especally the adagio. I quickly boughy a cd, but is very nice to be able to see it peformed, especially by one such as Andrew Marriner who plays it from within his soul so to speak. Thank you so very much for posting this.
Great performance!! Good sound and good showmanship. However the one thing i felt stood out above everything else was the pace at which he played. It was slow, relaxing and gentle simply perfect. I dislike the other soloists who play thru the first 2 - 3 mins quickly. But he simply did it superbly. Brilliante!
Perfect tempo--Unhurried, singing and sweet. An excellent artist AND, --in tune! A very nice touch to play a pp- recapitulation. Could have used a wee bit more ritardando in the last 4 bars.
yes, thank you, right after i asked the question, i searched for him on wikipedia and found out right away who he was. i suspected as much, since they look so much alike, are involved in the same kind of music, and share an unusual last name

@HeliCamHam you're only using the word rap in inverted commas like that because you probably don't have any understanding of what is good rap music and what is bad. Just like any form of music, classical included, there are are aesthetically pleasing forms of rap and some forms that are extremely well thought out and thoroughly enjoyable to listen to. Maybe if you do a small bit of research into it you would find you enjoy it as much as i am enjoying this new found clarinet concerto from Mozart
@HeliCamHam in just the same way art progressed from raphael to kandinsky - the attempt to recreate physical (aural) beauty transforms into an attempt to create emotional beauty.
although personally i like this A LOT more than rap ;)
@HeliCamHam the same way society moved on from classical to romantic. and so on. rap music was developed from hip-hop, with its origins in spoken word poetry and Afro rhythms. rap is not as classy or complex as Mozart but is is wrong for you to talk about rap in such a close minded way.
you know, its not good for someone who can understand Mozart to not be able to at least analyze 'rap' to be aware of how musical it is. i know Mtv isnt helping the image, but that's just that, the image.
@josefmusik haha I know you wrote this a month ago, but I completely agree with your opinion. Completely explains what I want to say to people like HeliCamHam
@HeliCamHam Well, I like this kind of music AND more modern music. Not rap, but punk and screamo. This is a good change to what I usually hear, and I love it. <3
@HeliCamHam I listen to just about everything for the musical aspect of it. Now, if we are talking about lyrical, I cna do wihthout most rap. But, on the other hand, rap is just a form of music just like classical, rock, metal, punk. It's all music. I love it all.
this guy is amazing...i hope that i can play the adagio that well at solo and ensemble...i'm only 13 but i'm pretty confident i'll get a superior...if i play nearly as well as andrew marriner
Mozart was such a prodigious composer that it is difficult to choose favourite pieces. I don't think I have ever heard any of his music that is not excellent. He was a genious.

By the way, I really like this recording/interpretation. It's better than those of the more famous top players in the world today.
This was also played in the movie Stealing Beauty with Liv Tyler arriving at the villa in Italy to find everyone there outside taking a siesta on lounge chairs in the afternoon Tuscan countryside and this concerto playing. I fell in love with this piece then
I really like andrew marriner. I went to one of his master classes and he has great ideas on how to fill a hall with your sound. His idea of embouchure is quite different from most americans but it obviously works for him just fine.
He sounds wonderful, its so beautiful, i've played this movement myself, but I don't think I'd ever be able to play as well as this. His interpretation is so delicate but so charismatic, I love how when the first melody comes back its a little more precious to him, thank you for sharing!
Great control over the instrument it's like he and the clarinet are like one in a complete harmony. This performance did move me unlike majority of other versions of this concerto.
