Oh yeah. Linda broke my heart in fall of 1972 when, after I asked her to marry me ... and she said yes! I told I had to finish the last 2 years of college - whereupon she said bye! This song was my farewell to her. 33 years later, a couple of marriages for me and one for her ... she told me she wasn't going to let me go again. 3 months later we married. Believe.
The first time I saw Edward Bear was at a free concert in Peterborough in 1970. This was less than 24 hours after losing my virginity, and my girl was by my side. So you could say I have pleasant memories of Edward Bear.
My alltime favorite song. What bitterseeet memories! I had just finished college and been drafted in 1972 when it came on. She lost interest while I was away. Not sure I ever got over it. I'm sure there are many others with similar memories every time they hear this.
Lindsey where have you gone? Why did you leave? I left the light on a long time......
@eddoc2 im with you, i cant get over my love (suzy) from 73, we planned a future together & she was pregnant with the son we would of had..she went on vacation with her family & i thought she was with another guy instead ! so i broke down & cryed day & nite with this song on..i found out a month later that summer that she WAS on vacation with her family (they were all killed in a head on accident). i got a late letter in the mail from her tellin me we only just began..this haunts me to this day.
I have been looking for this song for MANY years...I couldn't remember enough of the words to figure out the name of it, then it happened to be one of the background songs playing as I waited on hold to talk to the cable company and I was delighted! I love this song too!
Ordinarily we play the '80s station or "classic vinyl" at work, but yesterday I decided to put on the '70s station. After about five very familiar songs played, this song came on. Though I didn't remember it at first, once the chorus started I got goose bumps because it was hauntingly familiar (I hadn't heard it in over 30 years). It kept ringing in my head for the rest of the day, and when I got home I downloaded it, played it, and wept silently for all the times I've loved and lost.
man, any guy that has ever had a girl break his heart can relate to this!!!! i can remember this from when I was a kid and when the first girl ever broke my heart i remember listening to this!!!! Sherry Mathews where are you now?
This style is slowly but surely returning. The sappy love song has made a big comeback. Just check out Bruno's new #3 record, "It Will Rain!" The saddest, sappiest and most awesome tune this side of 1973!
The 1970's were a great time for music. I was 12 years old when I first heard this song. I belonged to Larry Evoy's fan club for awhile. Later on I married, and then I left the light on for her for 30 years. This is the last time, the last song. Thanks for posting this. Se la vie.
I was in college in 1974 when this song hit the airwaves. I lost my only real girlfirend in 1971 after we graduated high school. There was a period of several years I had no idea where she was. I would drive by her street late at night when I was back from college and wonder where she was and what she was doing. I found out she was getting married the day of my college granduation. I had planned on contacting her to renew our relationship. Too late! I ached for nearly 20 years.
I was 8 yrs old when this came out..LOVE IT....and i turned my light out and found a wonderful man in the darkness...5 yrs now...couldn't ask for anyone better...open mind, open heart...i'm so blessed..keep the faith that there's someone for everyone..just have to be open to it
Yep I sang this on my way home after I dropped the gang off..
I'm putting this on 8 track and I'll sing it loud when I go cruising.. It's one of the nice things about being old, I don't care so much anymore, lol....
This has been one of my favorite songs since '73, I was 10, another teary song... Honey, Bobby Goldsboro... Seriously, I was like.. WAWAWAW! H ave to blow my nose every time I hear it! Check out "With Pen in Hand" Written by Bobby, Sung by The one and ONLY... Miss Vikki Carr, Punch her up on youtube, On Carol Burnett, it will so touch everyone who has been through something like this, THAT IS TALENT!!! HAGN!
This was the "rough" mix done in about 15 minutes at the end of the final session. It was made by the engineer Bill Seddon for the Producer Gene Martenyc to take home and listen to it in preparation for the final mix. Gene came back the next day and they mixed for hours and couldn't get it any better than this and so .... even though it was recorded at 7.5 ips..... it became the master that you listening to!
heard this and thought...what a voice. I could never sing this great...although I have done my share of solo singing (ie, baritone for Beethoven's 9th, Masetto in Don Giovanni), could never sing as magnificent and this guy. WOW. Considering when the song first came out, utility rates were less expensive and you could live a light on--Belinda Carlise did, too. But now if you left a light on for for two years, the electric company would own your soul.
I loooooove this song, it's one of my favorites from the 70's! Every teenage girls dream was to have a boyfriend to listen to their favorite love songs together. Thanks so much for the memories, love it. Jacki
This one is by far my favorite song by them. Over the years, I have never forgotten even a single word to this song. I can sing along just as if I just heard it a min. ago.
@BeastOfTheTwilight This breaks my heart - what you said would tear at anyone's heart. I too listened to this song at around the age of 11 I guess. It reminds me of my aunt who raised me because we'd be riding in the car when it would come on the radio.
I've had the lights on for Cheryl for 38 years now. She'll never come back but she'll always be welcome. Every time I hear or think of this song, I think of her. This song will always remind me of how young, foolish, and unable to appreciate what I had I was back then. But then, at that age, aren't we all?
This song takes me back to my senior year of h.s. I too left the light on for her for 36 years. She finally came back and we are together; believe in miracles.
this was my senior year of highschool. a girl played it for me, the one i went to junior prom with. it meant very little to me back then, but now i hear it and i feel bad i acted towards her as i did. teri- if you read this, sorry for not knowing i was being a jerk to you. mi dispiace!! thanks for posting this!!
Thank you. It makes me feel better to know that I'm not the only one who still likes the old sappy songs of the 70's. This is the only supposed sad song that sounds happy that I know of, with the exception of ABBA's SOS. A true classic. They don't make 'em like this anymore. That's for sure.
Larry did not commit suicide!!! Try researching before you speak. He was in my Comedy troupe in the early 80's and ended up moving to a horse farm with his wife at the end of that decade. One of the sweetest, humblest men you could ever meet. He did write this for a real girl and the relationship fell apart but Larry got this hit song and she got nothing. The money he got for the international play of this tune supported him for many years.
I always enjoyed the bear on the cover of this recoed...maybe more than the record its self. It always reminded me of Camping up at Big Sir...We never understood what the lyrics were trying to tell us. Good song tho. Thanks
Alikah, the USA is not the world. A song can be a huge hit in its own country without ever having been heard in the US. Do you really think a song needs to be a hit in the USA to be a "hit". I don't think so. Robbie WIlliams is a good case to point out. Huge hit in Europe...mega huge but not the states. Same for Kylie Minogue. And Sir Cliff Richard and the 70's rock band Status Quo. These artists, though not all to my taste, have had huge careers, sold millions of records/cds.
Ah. Brings me back to the Hosmer School in Watertown MA. 3rd grade. I had a HUGE crush on a little girl in my class. When I hear this song, I think of all my little friends. So long ago. I do hope they all went on with happiness and the best of times.
I was 13 when this great song came out and like a lot of things in our life was long forgotten with the passage of time ! Spin ahead 35 years add I'm surfing Youtube and low and behold run across it here . After listening to it with a tear in my eye I downloaded it to my Ipod and am now cruising in my convertible down PCH with Edward bear
This song came out when I was a little girl in 3rd grade, I didn't understand the lyrics then, but loved the song 40 years ago and still do in present 2011!
im happy to say, even though i wasn't born when this song was written, that my uncle (Roger Ellis), is the guitarist for this song, and I am only 15, but I still really love this music : )
one of the best one hit wonders, cause if u were born in 60 like me , then u would remember pickin up ur guitar & writin a song like this , thinkin the world was over, cause she was gone. that was bout 40 years ago , but u still feel it when u hear somethin like this. you may even wonder how long it really mite of lasted back then if u stayed 2gether (not long). but ill go back if u offer.
I think we all left a light on for that special someone that never showed. I think about people I knew back then and how they would be today? I remember the midnight special and listening to thr King Biscut Flower Hour driving through Philly on my way back to Va. The things we remember? How stange.
I remember all of it. I grew up in NJ right next to the garden state center. We had accsess to all the concerts and big name players. The music the jersey shore the bars. By the way the jersey shore is nothing like that show on MTV. We had a name for those people BENNIES It was for Bayone,Elizabeth and I can't remember the rest.
I remember watching the MIdnight Special, waiting for Edward Bear, knowing this was the song he'd sing. They put him at the very end, and closed the show, with him singing, and all you saw was the credits rolling over him and the announcer talking. I was 13 years old and I was upset!
gosh, im in a mood huh. I dedicate this to pistol pete my light will never go out im sittin here waitin for a text or something. is it ever gonna happen?
gosh, im in a mood huh. I dedicate this to pistol pete my light will never go out im sittin here waitin for a text or something. is it ever gonna happen?
When we are young and worry about what others might think, we deny a lot but i'm sure this song brings back many beautiful memories. At least, I know it soes for me
LOVE THIS SONG .BUT WHERE IS THE VIDEO ?????? .I KNOW I HAVE SEEN IT BACK IN THE 70S .THE LEAD SINGER WAS PLAYING THE DRUMS AS HE SANG ALONG,DOSE ANYONE ELSE REMEMBER SEEING IT?? SO PLEASE SOMEONE IN THE KNOW CAN WE DIG UP A COPY ?? CHEERS GARY....
@tajm10 I left the light on for the man I hurt 37 years ago,and I pray he will forgive me.I have never stopped loving him but I wish him happiness as my life ends.
This has to be one of the most infectious songs from the 70's. I can understand your playing it over and over. Love it. Another favourite in The Radio Venus library.
I think the lead singer of this band, Edward Bear, and the band Foot in Cold Water are going to be playiing in Toronto this summer....not sure of details but heard it adverstised for all you old fans out there listen to Q107 as I am sure that is where I heard it...love this song.
It's pretty cool that you posted this. I bought this single when I was 8. I thought it was pretty amazing then. Although I haven't heard since 1979, I like the association that I still carry with it...sweet childhood, before step-mother appeared on the scene to render a once colorful canavas of future possibility black as midnight.
Whoaaa I rmember this soooo much because I was in a relationship(I was marriedshe wasn't ) and she kept the light on because she thought I might come by. It was mentally hard to deal with at the time.
Great Song... Great Voice....Great Feelings.... OK... sappy feelings.... but those are the feelings you have when you are young, idealistic and trying to figure out how you fit into the world.... Thank you, Edward Bear !
A lot of things about the 70's really did suck, but when the music was good, it was great. This is a forgotten classic from the glory days of Top 40 radio, it'll never be that way again. Thank you, Edward Bear, wherever you are.
Great song in my opinion. Brings back alot of memories, good and some not so good. Brings a melancholy feeling to me maybe because of the words that sort of express my thoughts and feelings about a person in my life. Maybe I should have left her a long time ago. But then I wasn't about to leave my kids alone with just her. Who knows what would've happened to them. I'm thinking, nothing good!!! Still, LOVE this song.
great song -- remember hearing it for the first time watching Midnight Special, i beleive on NY Eve one year late 70's / early 80's -- then took year to finally get it -- great song -- ig you liek this one, try "Why Not Me" by Fred Knoblock -- but I cannot find that one!!
Saw them on a black and white T,V, and the lead singer was the drummer. Great voice. Bought the 45 and played it over and over; thinking about a girl I had a big time crush on.
I can tell you where Edward Bear was December 1976, he was at Milton District High School, Larry Evoy sorry you never got the break into the US and world music market, It was one of the greatest moments of the childhood, and I still love the girl I danced with, not in my life, but married with 2 great kids, 10 moths boy and 2 1/2 year old girl, yhnak you, I never heard this song for years, until I downloaded on napster, sorry I could not buy it at the time, if you ever play again, follow you
Exclennt, Larry and friends - Danny too - hi! ###1 - that is a hard thing to do. Last song,eh?

This song came out when I was a little girl in 3rd grade, I didn't understand the lyrics then, but loved the song 40 years ago and still do in present 2011!

I will totally admit loving this song. In fact I played the 45 practically everyday being a lovestruck teenager at the time.

im happy to say, even though i wasn't born when this song was written, that my uncle (Roger Ellis), is the guitarist for this song, and I am only 15, but I still really love this music : )
AdieRMusic 7 months ago
one of the best one hit wonders, cause if u were born in 60 like me , then u would remember pickin up ur guitar & writin a song like this , thinkin the world was over, cause she was gone. that was bout 40 years ago , but u still feel it when u hear somethin like this. you may even wonder how long it really mite of lasted back then if u stayed 2gether (not long). but ill go back if u offer.

Isn't it amazing what we remember? I think that was the only time I would've ever seen him. Oh well, now we have youtube!

I remember watching the MIdnight Special, waiting for Edward Bear, knowing this was the song he'd sing. They put him at the very end, and closed the show, with him singing, and all you saw was the credits rolling over him and the announcer talking. I was 13 years old and I was upset!

Yes!
I was the same age and remember that moment - why isn't that Midnight Special version available on You Tube?

It's pretty cool that you posted this. I bought this single when I was 8. I thought it was pretty amazing then. Although I haven't heard since 1979, I like the association that I still carry with it...sweet childhood, before step-mother appeared on the scene to render a once colorful canavas of future possibility black as midnight.
