the manga ending is so much better... it tells a complete diffrent story about kakihara in the end. i got nothing against miikes version, he did a great job but the ending was a little bit lame. i like the more twisted version from the manga and sadly i thought miike would be the sick director to bring it on screen.
@TheSynthelle it's supposed to be like that. The blonde guy only imagined that he got cut and fell to his death...did you notice how in the end he was in the bathtub still alive....he was just sad that Ichi didn't kill him
This movie was amazing!!!!! It makes any "violent" or "scary" nowadays look like carebears! For real! This is where it's at! In terms of violence and gore that is! :)
@Brollyhero99TOP10 It's not very gory, in all honesty, compared to some ultra gore stuff from films mainly made for the gore. I just wasn't very amazed by the effects. I still love the movie, though.
Ok, well the gore was pretty explicit, but the thing that was the most shocking was just the sheer violence and actions in this movie! Read the manga, and you would probably feel sick....
0.o i think if i were falling off a building, that would be the last thing i'd want to say before i land to my death. Even if he's being killed by Ichi.
at the same time, though, it's the funniest part of the movie XDDDD
in have not read the whole manga series but i seen the whole manga film. And Kakihara does not die this way in the manga he first get one off his arms cut off by ichi shoes and he cuts off one off his arms, not even the location is correct. have it.
But anyways this movie is so unlike the manga that.
Now i get sick watching the movie to be honest. The special effects is so realistic and it is truly disturbing after what happens in this movie.
SOME ONE HELP - I've watched this movie a dozen times and I'm still confused.
1 - Jiji-is he really all muscular or was that him mesing with the guys head.
2 - does Ichi exist or is it really Jiji kiling but making people think and see someone alse.
3 - did Khakihara kill himself or was the whole ending after he says "theirs no one left to kill me" imagined. cause he's alive in that one room all by himself, like he went crazy.
- i got that Takeshi the kid grew up strong and killed Jiji.
the ending was an attempt to replicate on film jim thompsons ending for a hell of a woman-also i got the impression that the gangs were destroyed in an illegal undercover police operation
@gearsofwarisdabest You could except clock work orange was a good movie. This was painfuly boring to watch at times. I am so glad someone posted it on youtube because the end is clearly the best part. And on a unrelated but intresting note Ichi in a lot of ways was the basis for the dark knights joker.
If the main villain at the end was hallucinating due to having needles in his ears, then wouldn't his perception of Ichi also be skewed? That maybe there is no Ichi as violent as he likes it to be (therefore making this entire movie a dream)?
The thing that pissed me off is that we never learnt jijjis motive for getting ichi to do all the killing, was it for money? did he want to be the main yakuza in town?, also why did karen pretend to be miss takabana?
I came to believe, it was for love. That's always been my take on it. Simple as that: Jiji loved Kakihara. He was jealous and let down. Throughout the movie I thought that Jiji just needs Kakihara dead because he was kicked out of the gang and Kakihara basically is just an EXTREMLEY bad person. No further reason needed to get rid of him. The way Jiji approaches Kakihara at the end, the way he puts his hair aside, the way he looks sadly on Kakihara to me just showcased love.
im sorry you all can't grasp the concept of this film. i dont want to argue with you fuckwads, but I will say this.

YES.
it is, in fact, CONFUSING.
it's SADISTIC
it's MASOCHISTIC
it's obviously too much for you to fucking handle.
ok, so kakihara allucinates the whole fight, and ends up killing himself. Jiji then gets frustrated and hangs himself. but whats with the scene with kakihara in the room with the chains? is it a flashback?
The Prequal SUCKS! It is filmed with small digital camera from best buy, it's only 83 min long, not much happens, barely explaining the origins of Ichi--just shows him moping around high school. There are a few kills, but they're boring and we don't even SEE them happen, the just the aftermath...kind of like here, but this was better made and just plain BETTER. Bottom Line: Don't see it.
Kakihara did not die in this movie. His falling was also a part of his fantasy, just like him being cut by Ichi was. If we agree the forehead cut was imaginary, then how could Jiji know about it? The whole scene is in his head. The final shot of him is not in hell, is simply in a bathroom--he is very much alive, but dissapointed because there is no one left to inflict the ultimate pain on him.
Very good theory, but who is the guy in black clothes that stares at the screem in the crow part at the end of the movie? it was Ichi, or is a flashback of a teenage Kakihara or what?
It was the kid. The cop's kid who was kicking Ichi at the end. If you notice, when the ex-cop bushes the hair away from Kakihara's head, the scar is gone. That means that everything Kakihara saw when he took the needles out of his head was a hallucination. He just threw himself off the ledge. That kid is still alive and that's him at the end...the new Ichi.
Why, thank you. This movie is very hard to follow: The plot is thin and characters seem to come and go at random times, but it's very well filmed and just soooooooooo f$(%$ed up, it's hard not to like. I think the kid could be the new ichi. He will just be a tortured soul like the original Ichi. Will he kill? Maybe. Can he kill? Probably. Will we ever know? Probably not.
@QuatermassMan you have made sense to me now ive watched dis movie over and over again and still could not master why jiji check kakihara's forehead but what happens to jiji does he kill himself at the end or does someone kill him ?
@fidjibajs1 I may be way off, but my interpretation was that Jiji was Ichi all along. He was only imagining himself to be a cool assassin and when he saw that Kakihara did not have the cut, it finally broke his illusion and he couldn't live with knowing, so he hangs himself. If you notice, there is a cut of Jiji remembering the little kid kicking...how could Jiji remember this unless he was there on the ground in Ichi's place?
@Downshifting07 Honestly. I think it is up to interpertation. Ethier scenario fits and I thought the same thing when I saw this. He could have simply killed himself or he may just be in a bathroom disapointed there is no one left to hurt him. In a sense either or doesn't really matter because since there is no one left to hurt him he is in his own personal Hell anyways so there isn't really any distinction for him
I ran to the toilet and puked when kakihara Sliced out the tip of his tongue that was NOT cool. But Ichi The Killer 2 that'd be cool.......Hey btw anyone who sees this movie and liked it should watch "Audition" it was takashi miike the director of Ichi the killer made "Audition" in 1999. Its pretty rad got some good disturbing blood and gory torture scenes and stuff.
and then jiji hung himself because everything he worked for was in vain because the man he wanted dead so badly wasn't killed by jijs plan so thinking his life plan to kill kakihara had failed he felt that there was nothing to live for and hung himself but i don't know who the guy was at the end when the crow dove past his left shoulder that I'm unsure about. like whether he actually killed jiji or whether jiji killed himself that was left open. i reckon they should make a sequel.
But yeah Danmann861 your right. Kakihara was craving for the ultimate pain to be inflicted on him ichi didn't do it. Depressed Kakihara stuck needles through his ears piercing his brain. Because Kakihara wanted the pain so much he basically haluccinated the fantasy of ichi givng him the ultimate pain but he in fact dellusionally killed himself which depressed jiji cause he wanted kakihara to die by ichi's hand and ichi worked for jiji so he would have died according to jiji's master plan.
Kakihara, Kakihara was the man that Jiji desired to see be killed by Ichi, however since Ichi did not get the job done, well Jiji's desired weren't filled either. Hence he commits suicide.
That's my take on the ending. Everyone in this film is either a Sado or a Masochist, and everyone in the film didn't really get what they desired and lusted for
this is proven by the fact that when Jiji lifts his Kakihara's hair up and reveals no scar to be found, the scene with Kakihara in the bath tub with chains around him is a call back to the aftermath of the Karen beating earlier in the film, its symbols that Kakihara did not recieve the pleasure he craved for just as he did not get from Karen earlier in the film. As for Jiji it is quite simple, he is a sadist, he is the manipulator behind all of this. However his main man Ichi did not kill the
Kakihara realizes that Ichi has let him down, he doesn't get the satisfaction he craves from Icho, depressed and let down by this fact seeing Takeshi booting Ichi and realising he isn't the figurative one Kakihara sticks the needles in his ears and proceeds to throw himself of the building, hallucinating his ultimate fantasy of Ichi giving him the beating he desired and lusted for throughtout the whole film
Ok...I've got another one. (I didn't come up with is, but whoever did is indeed a clever clogs):
Jiijii uses his hypnosis to manipulate children who have witnessed their parents die, turning them into killers. Takeshi was his next project, but it backfired and Takeshi killed Jiijii.
There's a theory that Jiijii and Ichi are the same person, and that Ichi is Jiijii's sadistic side. Also, when Ichi kills Kakihara, it's all a fantasy, and Kakihara kills himself (which is probably more obvious). As for the end, I guess that's Jiijii hanging from the tree...and the teenage boy could be Takeshi. The blue chain room scene is a real puzzler. Even though the ending is IMPOSSIBLE to decifer, I bloody love this film. It's infuriating, yet incredible.
However for the bathroom scene .....NO I do not belive Kakihara is in hell...that's stupid... because if you look carefully you'll see that there are chains just like the ones Kakihara was using to let the chick beat the crap out of him for his pleasure it could be just the flash back to how Kakahira got that smile scar ..not sure why tho and one more thing the boy looks grown up at the end and the crow flys ....this could be couple years after the roof scene.
Jijii sees Kakahira dead on the ground and smiles as that's what he wanted Ichi to do but he then he sees there are no cut wounds on his body and he looks up on the building and his smile goes away because he goes into the guilt trip for fucking with Ichis brain with hypnosis and making him the killer he is today so he hangs him self.
Ichi probly dies of the gun shot wounds by bleeding to death on the roof while the kid is kicking him for killing his dad as he is dieing.
Kakihara
Feels disapointed with Ichi so much being a wimp he sticks pins in both ears loosing his hearing and then causing hallucinations of Ichi cutting off kids head and slicing Kakihara head making him fall back off the roof.
well that ending to that movie was very good, it was very mysterious but at the same time very trilling like you have to figuer out the whole thing out. but what's with that guy who hung himself from the tree at the end of the movie which i though was very weird.
Ichi did never exist i guess.. it was kakihara's imagination.. bcuz kakihara is so deep in sadomasochism, so he wanted his own best death ever.. that was to die by a real amazing killer. in the end he is in hell.. for committing sin. Then what about Jijii? killed himself bcuz he felt pain for causing too much deaths? was the kid who killed him? why? damn.. I'm tired to think..
kakihara went crazy and killed himself because ichi didn't kill him (hes probably the serious version of the Dark Knight's joker, there are waaay too much similarities, from the crazy outfits to the sadistic attitude).. the little boy took on ichi's persona and killed that old man that brainwashed ichi
Ichi did never exist i guess.. it was kakihara's imagination.. bcuz kakihara is so deep in sadomasochism, so he wanted his own best death ever.. that was to die by a real amazing killer. in the end he is in hell.. for committing sin. thats cuz he hulusinated the whole fight. he stuck needles into his ears afffecting his brain cuzing him to hulusionate the whole thing causing him to fall to his death..... my friend told me bout it i never saw the movie dont want to either....
seeing this, it's not hard to see how the Japanese culture could commit the rape of Nanking; something verrrrry disturbing in their Zeitgeist (I know, huge generalization).
Sure, no denying that; the two are different...arguably the Pulp Fiction model relates to limiting the damage to those who stole from the mob boss...oh, wait (haha)...yeah, I guess the difference is superficial at best; was gonna say the American variety is more honor bound, but that, too, is wrong; no American would cut their tongue in remorse...
This is the first time that I see the movie! Is very interesting and weird at the same time. In my opnion Asano Tadanobu (Kakihara) is a great actor, I knew him from "Last Life In The Universe" and "Zatoichi".
About the end: Kakihara imaginated Ichi killing Takeshi when he stick the needle in the head? Is that because he doesn't have the mark of the cut in the forehead? And the man who shows at the end is really Takeshi?
But then explain jijii walking next to Kakihara's body with no cut. Then it cutting to Kakihara in the room and his mouth opening an closing as if a puppet. But then we see Takeshi (now older) and a body in the tree. Unless the whole movie was dream by Takeshi I am missing something.
thats lame. jijii kills "gorilla" cause he's in fact a 30 year old man using steroids and looked old cause of surgery. he was killing "gorilla" by the time kakihara was about to discover ichi
I will be happy to know that you wont be able to resist checking back one last time to see the outcome of this... you are a childish little cunt.. suck my ass fucker.
This is clearly the product of a diseased mind. Even after reading all the comments I have no clue what the hell to think of the ending with Jijii and Ichi/Takeshi watching him hang. It was a total mind fuck hands down and required all of us to be of a twisted mindset to finish, but it was interesting. My guess is that blondie offed himself and jumped off the edge, Ichi finally proved that he wasn't going to kill on command anymore, and Jijii commmitted suicide. Takeshi is an unknown right now.
Fuck you? Am I not entitled to my own opinion about this movie, just because you´re an asshole that loves this kinds of movies does not mean that I have to so Fuck You!
Actually a very tragic movie about loss of innocence, manipulation and regret. There is no redemption for antagonist or protagonist here. Only the sure consequences of crime, violence and greed. Gory and sick to be sure, but it illustrates the depravity of the human condition. Obsession, betrayal and tragedy. This story is very Shakespearean.
Still don't get the ending much, but a very good summary on your part :) I agree; something about this movie just makes it profoundly amazing, even perhaps a bit beautiful (although it is hard to find).
this film is the best i have seen. j-horrors are so much better than all that hollywood shit. it really gets you thinking. ayone know why jiji cries when he finds kakihara on the floor??
I love kakihara, the way hes running from itchi and all happy about it when he's like "you scare the shit out of me!" or whatever, kakihara is really funny in this scene
Whoops, I'm sorry. He didn't kill Takeshi - Takeshi is the kid.
In fact, that's supposed to be Takeshi grown up in the very last shot of the film. Basically he'll become the 'new' Ichi from all the trauma he went through. It's unclear whether Jiji hung himself or if Takeshi was responsible.
i think that that ichi didnt really kill the blond fella rather the blondie imagined that happening whilst killing himself and ichi died by the boy or didnt atall, i dont really know though i am confused, maybe someone else can explain?
this is the best f'n movie ever! Has anyone ever seen the lead actors other movie called "Shark Skin Man and Peach Hip Girl"? Let me know. I'm really starting to get into these Jap Horror flicks :)
Notice Though on the last shot when hes walking hes limping as if he had been shot thru the leg, ichi got shot. I guess the director was trying to get across that ichi and the little boy were sort of the same person.
overall, i liked the movie... but boy, what a major pussy that ichi was... talking about asking to get ur ass whooped... he deserved to die the way he did.
Ichi had a breakdown after he killed who he believed was his brother. I dont see how you could say he was a pussy after all the other kills he did before this...
he only killed those people because he was brain washed... as a regular person, he was a complete douche bag... he didn't stand up for himself, he was scared of women, and lived his life like he was a helpless lil kid when he should have acted like a grown man.
i get u bro... however, one thing that bothers me about many japanese films are that many of their characters are portrayed as weak, submissive, and childlike... or either they're the complete opposite, totally bad ass... in this film in particular, i didn't like Ichi because of his stereotypical character... it just bothered me.
Quite possible if Ichi wasnt fighting back or defending himself. Its funny how ichi's legs/feet were his weapons and he died the same way. Im also wondering if it was actually takeshi holding up ichi's head (that kakihara saw) instead.
the scene at 20 with ichi holding takeshi'c head is a hallucination caused by the dude sticking needles in his head. Thats why there is no mark from Ichi kicking him in the head because he didn't actually kick him. Therefore Takeshi isn't dead.
or maybe kakihara is able regenerate

Because Kakihara wanted the pain so much he basically haluccinated the fantasy of ichi givng him the ultimate pain but he in fact dellusionally killed himself which depressed jiji cause he wanted kakihara to die by ichi's hand and ichi worked for jiji so he would have died according to jiji's master plan.

Kakihara, Kakihara was the man that Jiji desired to see be killed by Ichi, however since Ichi did not get the job done, well Jiji's desired weren't filled either. Hence he commits suicide.
That's my take on the ending. Everyone in this film is either a Sado or a Masochist, and everyone in the film didn't really get what they desired and lusted for
danmann861 3 years ago
I think takeshi killed jiijii at the end (hence the crow).
lazydragon333 3 years ago
this is proven by the fact that when Jiji lifts his Kakihara's hair up and reveals no scar to be found, the scene with Kakihara in the bath tub with chains around him is a call back to the aftermath of the Karen beating earlier in the film, its symbols that Kakihara did not recieve the pleasure he craved for just as he did not get from Karen earlier in the film. As for Jiji it is quite simple, he is a sadist, he is the manipulator behind all of this. However his main man Ichi did not kill the
danmann861 3 years ago
No u are wrong ichi life now in germany as his 1 on his back get blood. Look more exact and u see the symbols.
HongKongKanto 3 years ago
Okay the ending
Kakihara realizes that Ichi has let him down, he doesn't get the satisfaction he craves from Icho, depressed and let down by this fact seeing Takeshi booting Ichi and realising he isn't the figurative one Kakihara sticks the needles in his ears and proceeds to throw himself of the building, hallucinating his ultimate fantasy of Ichi giving him the beating he desired and lusted for throughtout the whole film
danmann861 3 years ago
if Kakihara's death by ichi was a hallucination, how the hell did he fall off the building?
TheBackseatJesus 3 years ago
Ok...I've got another one. (I didn't come up with is, but whoever did is indeed a clever clogs):
Jiijii uses his hypnosis to manipulate children who have witnessed their parents die, turning them into killers. Takeshi was his next project, but it backfired and Takeshi killed Jiijii.
Amazedkiwiduct18 3 years ago
your solution is very plausible and it may just be it.
ahfldsj 3 years ago
There's a theory that Jiijii and Ichi are the same person, and that Ichi is Jiijii's sadistic side. Also, when Ichi kills Kakihara, it's all a fantasy, and Kakihara kills himself (which is probably more obvious). As for the end, I guess that's Jiijii hanging from the tree...and the teenage boy could be Takeshi. The blue chain room scene is a real puzzler. Even though the ending is IMPOSSIBLE to decifer, I bloody love this film. It's infuriating, yet incredible.
Amazedkiwiduct18 3 years ago
However for the bathroom scene .....NO I do not belive Kakihara is in hell...that's stupid... because if you look carefully you'll see that there are chains just like the ones Kakihara was using to let the chick beat the crap out of him for his pleasure it could be just the flash back to how Kakahira got that smile scar ..not sure why tho and one more thing the boy looks grown up at the end and the crow flys ....this could be couple years after the roof scene.
VideoGame420 3 years ago
Jijii sees Kakahira dead on the ground and smiles as that's what he wanted Ichi to do but he then he sees there are no cut wounds on his body and he looks up on the building and his smile goes away because he goes into the guilt trip for fucking with Ichis brain with hypnosis and making him the killer he is today so he hangs him self.
VideoGame420 3 years ago
My realistic version.
See my other comment for other real endings.
VideoGame420 3 years ago
well that ending to that movie was very good, it was very mysterious but at the same time very trilling like you have to figuer out the whole thing out. but what's with that guy who hung himself from the tree at the end of the movie which i though was very weird.
but still the film was great.
eroupopper 3 years ago
Ichi did never exist i guess.. it was kakihara's imagination.. bcuz kakihara is so deep in sadomasochism, so he wanted his own best death ever.. that was to die by a real amazing killer. in the end he is in hell.. for committing sin. Then what about Jijii? killed himself bcuz he felt pain for causing too much deaths? was the kid who killed him? why? damn.. I'm tired to think..

that's because he committed suicide, ichi never kicked him, that was an hallucination.

It was likely caused when he stuck the pins in his ears; He may have pierced his brain and induced the hallucination.

kakihara went crazy and killed himself because ichi didn't kill him (hes probably the serious version of the Dark Knight's joker, there are waaay too much similarities, from the crazy outfits to the sadistic attitude).. the little boy took on ichi's persona and killed that old man that brainwashed ichi

seeing this, it's not hard to see how the Japanese culture could commit the rape of Nanking; something verrrrry disturbing in their Zeitgeist (I know, huge generalization).
mowriter 3 years ago
And after watching Pulp Fiction, I can see how America could commit male rape, murder and drug abuse.
Abasuto 3 years ago

Ritemis 3 years ago
yes. yes. yes. ;D
RichiBitch 3 years ago
But then explain jijii walking next to Kakihara's body with no cut. Then it cutting to Kakihara in the room and his mouth opening an closing as if a puppet. But then we see Takeshi (now older) and a body in the tree. Unless the whole movie was dream by Takeshi I am missing something.
afterlifex 3 years ago
thats lame. jijii kills "gorilla" cause he's in fact a 30 year old man using steroids and looked old cause of surgery. he was killing "gorilla" by the time kakihara was about to discover ichi

No wonder american made horror movies suck so badly..they have no sport in them.
Us latinos have our own way of making really gory and fucking twisted movies.
But this movie in particular is one of my favorites!!
RaisedxFist 4 years ago
This is clearly the product of a diseased mind. Even after reading all the comments I have no clue what the hell to think of the ending with Jijii and Ichi/Takeshi watching him hang. It was a total mind fuck hands down and required all of us to be of a twisted mindset to finish, but it was interesting. My guess is that blondie offed himself and jumped off the edge, Ichi finally proved that he wasn't going to kill on command anymore, and Jijii commmitted suicide. Takeshi is an unknown right now.

What a let down....the entire movie was building up to the meeting of Kakihara and Ichi.
And what do we get for a climax? We get nothing thanks to Takeshi's dad interupting the fight and Ichi breaking down.
What a shame.

o.O he killed the boy????
DiesKitty 4 years ago
No, he didn't. He killed the boy's father, but Kakihara hallucinated killing the kid himself. Killing Takeshi made Ichi basically break down.
Ultrasecond 4 years ago
Whoops, I'm sorry. He didn't kill Takeshi - Takeshi is the kid.
In fact, that's supposed to be Takeshi grown up in the very last shot of the film. Basically he'll become the 'new' Ichi from all the trauma he went through. It's unclear whether Jiji hung himself or if Takeshi was responsible.
Ultrasecond 4 years ago
I love movies like these, the viewers interpret the endings how ever they can justify them, but there is never a direct gesture to the events.

overall, i liked the movie... but boy, what a major pussy that ichi was... talking about asking to get ur ass whooped... he deserved to die the way he did.
whitekid3 4 years ago
Ichi had a breakdown after he killed who he believed was his brother. I dont see how you could say he was a pussy after all the other kills he did before this...
xphilopiax 4 years ago
he only killed those people because he was brain washed... as a regular person, he was a complete douche bag... he didn't stand up for himself, he was scared of women, and lived his life like he was a helpless lil kid when he should have acted like a grown man.
whitekid3 4 years ago
you missing out on the the whole sadomachistic theme of the whole movie
one part of ichi is a killer, an inflicter of pain, the other part of ichi is a child like submissive, reciever of pain
you should read up about the whole sadomachism thing, it's hell fucked up but intriging at the same time
phubbie1 4 years ago
i get u bro... however, one thing that bothers me about many japanese films are that many of their characters are portrayed as weak, submissive, and childlike... or either they're the complete opposite, totally bad ass... in this film in particular, i didn't like Ichi because of his stereotypical character... it just bothered me.
whitekid3 4 years ago
WAIT!!! did that little kid kill Ichi just by kicking him??? because I find that hard to believe
Huntertribe88 4 years ago
Quite possible if Ichi wasnt fighting back or defending himself. Its funny how ichi's legs/feet were his weapons and he died the same way. Im also wondering if it was actually takeshi holding up ichi's head (that kakihara saw) instead.

the scene at 20 with ichi holding takeshi'c head is a hallucination caused by the dude sticking needles in his head. Thats why there is no mark from Ichi kicking him in the head because he didn't actually kick him. Therefore Takeshi isn't dead.
