  • Still relevant to the class system we have today, as most Jam songs are. Little boy soldiers, Iraq? Afghanistan?

When i was a kid (and a mod) Weller's lyrics didn't have the social impact they do now i'm an adult (and still a bit of a mod) he must be frustrated listening to the crap thats being pumped out these days labelled as 'political' or 'edgy' Green Day, though i like them are an example.

  • I love this song so much it takes me back so much to the happiest most careless ignorant time in my life. Just straight back. When I listen to this song Im in that mental state I was in back then again for a few minutes. That whole flavour and smell or what my world was like back then.... much better.......

  • @manwithouthat44

Thanks man ;) Nice comment! Be well ;)

  • just Brilliant - I love The Jam :D

  • Do british people own corner shops in pakistan?

  • You don't here a lot about them. But I've always loved them. Great song

  • May I recommend the book 'A Concise Guide To Eighties Music' by Karl Vorderman. The author is a big fan of this track.

  • nice one i love all their songs and of course quadrophenia

  • god they look so young........and now we look so old! haha!

  • Humberkid you are such a prick...

  • Super track, wonderful piece of Weller 60's influenced brilliance.

  • i would stronglyadvise people to go and get the vinyl album play it perhaps alone for me it meant everthing and nothing its difficult to put a finger on the jam but it seemed to indicate a bigger world l....its fun to,rebellious

  • @gossamery very good comment

  • Shame Weller is such an arrogant type. He's written so many great songs. Poignant stuff this song in these days, as is "Smithers-Jones".

  • I love this tune! my all time favourite jam song. gets better every time i hear it!!!

  • This is one of the best ones on the Sound Affects album, along with Start and That's Entertainment. Old music is the best! New music sucks.

  • Absolute classic, Weller is a genius but will never forgive him for splitting up the Jam.

Style council were never as good.

  • @Eggmuffin28 He had to split the jam cause it's the only way he can grow as a songwriter

  • Love u PW!!! Na na na na na............

  • shut up! this is a classic. stop trying to define it !

  • @modernway09 I think it's more to do with the scurge which is Socialism.

Don't get me wrong, old fashioned Socialism is a fine system, unfortunately todays off-shoot of Socialism cares nothing of protecting the indigenous working class of the U.K and more about flooding us with third world immigrants/cheap labour.

  • THANK U SO VERY MUCH 4 POSTNG THS

    Love the jam

  • I bought this LP when i was 13, many years ago but they are still one of my best ever bands x true british!

  • So evocative. And Blur thought they invented post-Kinks Britpop...

  • one of the best!

    so cool, so nice!

  • Sorry for the delay answering! Thanks for posting ;) Glad you like it mate.

  • 2,27

    Beautiful photo

  • Glad you like it - thanks for commenting!

  • only cool people in this club mate!! thankyou xenoxiq.. I think its late the cows av comehome!.........peace!

  • Sorry for the delay on your comment mate ;)

So true - cool peeps only ;p The rest of you - PISS off! hehehe.

  • In the early 80's when I was about 10 the first record I ever bought was the Going Underground single. I went on to collect all of their albums on vinyl but no longer have them....lost during one of my many house moves or stolen I guess...fucker!

  • Ah shit man - I feel your pain. You can find all the gear on vinyl now pretty cheap - there's also cd's and digital download of course (legal ones that is).

HMV also do a boxset called "Direction Reaction Creation" that has pretty much everything they have ever done!

Best of luck getting the collection back mate ;) Thnaks for your post!

  • Thank for the reply. I wasn't aware of Direction Reaction Creation and since I've no longer got a turntable record player I just d/l the tracks I like but it'd be nice to still have my vinyl collection - it'd be such a great thing to still have for so many reasons not least of which is that collecting those LP's and 45's represented such a carefree and enjoyable time in my life.

  • That boxset is available on CD too ;) Worth having a look at to basically complete your collection in one fell swoop.

Cheers for posting - be well!

  • Good idea, I'll do that. What's your favourite Jam LP? For me it's a toss up between Dig The New Breed, All Mod Cons and Sound Affects :) . . . although Setting Sons takes some beating too. Oh I can't decide I guess I like them all although This is The Modern World wasn't one of their best productions IMO.

  • My favourite is "Setting Sons" - No contest. "Sound Affects" is number two ;)

I agree about "Modern World" although, to be fair, The Jam had a certain something "cool" when it came to raw sound - "In the city" was fantastic - just listen to "I got by in time", "Art school" and "non-stop dancing" and you'll see what I mean.

Cheers for the chat! - keep it coming!

  • @xenoxiq I go back and forth between Sound Affects and Setting Sons.

  • @jnmud Aye, sound Affects is a fantastic album too - always did love the version of "That's Entertainment" on there.

    Cheers for your comment!

  • sorry bout your ioss. mustave bin a real cunt!! someone ever took my jam records, tapes, cds id fuck up there life!......peace. from medicine hat.

  • Well said.

  • Thank you for posting this., I have some The jam albums.

  • You're welcome! What albums do you own?

  • This is a fine example of why The Jam were one of the most important bands of the 70s/80s, and why Weller chose to split them to form the gawdawful Style Council is one of the great mysteries of contemporary British music ,,,

  • Well said that man! I can understand Weller wanting to explore other avenues and styles of music, but couldn't he have steered the Jam down that path?

    As you say - a mystery ;p

    Cheers for the comment!

  • I don't think you'll find too many arguments here, mate ;) Thank you for commenting.

  • Lucky bastard!!!

  • heheh you mean Mattew1999?

    Cheers for teh comment!

  • Yes He´s a lucky bastard

  • Aye, that he is ;p Be well!

  • God created all men equal!

  • You really don't want to involve a sniper in a god conversation ;)

If he did create all men equal - then he created some more equal than others.

But thank you for your comment.

  • We are all created the same - man makes some more equal than others. Have a good new year.

  • I could argue that god allows it to happen - But I won't. Discussions of that sort are futile.

Thanks for commenting and you have a brilliant new year!! ;)

  • Same here - had a shedload of clothes the same as theirs ;p

As for the memories - you're welcome mate. Thanks for the comment!

  • Thank you so much for putting this up. I love The Jam and this song is my current favourite. I wish there was more music around nowadays at this level. Very little around at the moment that's any good. I always feel like I missed my time somehow.

  • I think that's a common feeling among a lot of younger people with taste nowadays - as you say, there is very little around worth listening to anymore.

Be thankful for the oldies but goodies ;p

    Cheers for the comment ;)

  • I am thankful. Very. Just wish I could have been around to see it happening...

  • Thanks for uploading al these great Jam classics. They might not be my favourite band, that's still The Who but they certainly are among my personal top-5 (together with Pink Floyd, Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience & The Who).

Oh it's tough being 15 in an age dominated bij the Jonas Brothers:(

    anyway, Thanks

  • More than welcome ;) You got a damn good taste in music. Thank you for commenting!

  • How good to see all the album covers again. As we have no means of playing them my wife sold all my vynils on a car boot. Curse technology....Grrrrrr.

  • Ouch! - tell her you're selling HER at a boot sale unless she replaces them all ;p

    Thanks for commenting mate ;)

  • She bought me an I-Pod for crimbo pre loaded with The Jam Story... Bless.

It has Man in the corner shop onitt innitt

  • heheh nice. A wife with taste! Make sure you hang onto that one!

Cheers for the comment and Merry Christmas!

  • Happy new year in advance.

    Cheers for posting ;-)

  • You too mate! Have a good one ;)

  • Happy days indeed. God Bless !!

  • You too and thank you for your comment!

  • The music that inspires...

  • If only it had inspired more people to make music today - instead of the manufactured crap we have now.

    Cheers for commenting mate ;)

  • Brilliant song, such a bittersweet melody. Love it! Thank you so much for posting it! I really must buy the complete The Jam collection, still searching for it! Can you imagine: nothing by The Jam is available in my place >:( loads of pop crap instead.

  • Thank you for your comment! You have my sympathies about the sort of music available to you ;)

Give 1000 thanks to youtube! Be well.

  • thanks for posting..... where is his equal today? Nowhere!

God bless the Jam and all their fans who with big hearts attempt to make this world a better place.

  • More than welcome ;) Thank you for taking the time to post a comment!

  • Paul....you are god!!

  • Hehhe thanks for your comment!

  • Seein him live in december can't wait!

  • Utter class

    Great post!

  • I couldn't agree with you more if I tried and thank you for the comment, mate!

  • 0:22 they look fuckin cool, UP THE MODS!!

  • Hehe don't they? I used to dress that way too - along with my huge bloody parka and silk cravat.

On a side not - it's been years since I heard "Train to Skaville" too ;)

Cheers for the comment mate - KTF!

  • "Sound Effects," kicked off the 80's for me. Great album, great time and good memories. Now when I hear this song I smile but with a tear in my eye because I've become the man in a corner shop. Sometimes I get tired but this song puts it arms around me. Thank you Paul.

  • And that is why bands like The Jam will endure, even after splitting.

Modern "music" (and I use the term loosely) is utter shit compared to this. A bunch of overpaid, talentless, tuneless dickheads. All manufactured shit and makeup.

Gimme my "old-school" stuff any day ;)

    Thank you for your comment!

  • THANK YOU for this video. The Jam will always occupy a special time in my life. It was an exciting time. The energy and current was in the air and the Jam were right at the forefront. Long may they live.

  • You are more than welcome!

I can safely say that I'd sell what little remains of my soul for the chance to see them reform and go to the gig!

    Cheers for your comment ;)

  • Awesome band, man...wonderful, wonderful songs....The only problem I have with The Jam is that Weller used to talk bad things about The Clash, and I love The Clash.

  • I'll give you that one - Weller was opinionated and quite outspoken at times, something that didn't endear him to the mainstream "musicians" of the day.

    But show me a musician that isn't opinionated> ;)

Thanks for the comment mate ;)

  • You cant make a British omelette without breaking a few 1970's eggs

  • Well said ;) Thanks for commenting!

  • WHAT CAN YOU SAY ?

  • How about saying "OI you so-called-musicians of today...this is how it's done"? ;)

    Thank you for your comment!

  • Classic Weller........If I remember correctly this was brought out on a yellow flexi....Keep em coming fella. KTF

  • That would be worth adding to my collection ;)

    Thanks for the comment mate!

  • The Well is deep. Paulie still kicks out great songs. Even his foray into house music was snap!

  • Nicely put! Thanks for the comment mate.

  • One of my many fave's

  • Always glad to meet a fellow fan!

    Thank you for commenting ;)

  • Great tune. Great to see it on here. Brings back a lot of good memories...this and Monday, Boy about Town etc etc....Cornwall Coliseum 28 Nov '82...forever etched in my mind. The best of times.

  • Ah man - "Boy about town" was a fantastic track ;) Too short, I thought ;p

Saw them in ther prime, then? Lucky sod!

Thanks for the comment mate - glad to meet another fan!

  • Was lucky enough to see them at the Rainbow. Sheer class

Great work for posting mate - la la la la!

  • Lucky bugger! What year was that, mate?

    Thanks for commenting!

  • its a great tune this,often overlooked.

  • My favourite Jam track by far and away ;) Thanks for the comment!

  • This was always one of my favourite songs by The Jam - shame Weller became a dreary "adult orientated rocker" in his dotage, he was such an "angry young man".

This and Tales from the Riverbank - sublime and glorious.

  • That is probably the best I have ever heard Weller summarised - I have to confess to actually onlly liking a couple of his "Style Council" tracks and probably none of his solo.

Oh and "Tales from the riverbank" is on my list of videos to do next ;) I've been busy as hell.

    Thanks for the comment!

  • have to say that im more than surprised to hear anyone say that they dont like any of Paul Weller's solo music, Stanley Road immediately springs to mind!! its at variance with such an avid follower of the jam, as for being an" angry young man", people mellow and mature with age what more can I say?

  • It is at odds, I'll agree ;) I guess I was just so set with The Jam and used to their sound.

I'll have to try some of Weller's solo gear again - who knows, maybe you'll convert me ;))

    Thanks for the comment mate!

  • wicked!! what a blast from the past!!! the Jam rule! ty for the post love it! x

  • More than welcome - and thanks for the comment!

  • great tune mate. fell in love with the jam after i saw them in a pub in kensington in 77. a huge influence on my own music...

  • You saw them "raw" in a pub? You lucky bugger! Thanks for the comment mate ;)

  • These guys were the epitome of cool. This song all time fav Jam tune & in a.t.f top 5. Thanks for posting.

  • And thank you for commenting ;)

  • @kemwhareaitu A pleasure ;) Thanks for posting!

  • thankz for posting mate an absolute classic

  • It sure is mate. Thanks for the comment!

  • @mikey461 More than welcome MIke - glad you like it!

  • THANK YOU very much! The Jam were

before my time but its all iv known and all

i ever will know long live The Jam.

  • More than welcome ;) Glad you like it mate!

  • Takes me back to school days....totally wicked. I was gutted when the Jam split.

  • I think it was the speed it happened that took us all by surprise. Top of their game one second then - bam - splitting up.

I was gutted too, mate. Thanks for the comment.

  • Nice1 for sticking this on...definately one of Weller's best.

  • Thanks mate - glad you like it ;)

  • Greatest song ever penned by Mr. Weller...

  • Glad you like it, mate. Thanks for the comment.

  • Everyone should hear this tune.

    The lyrics are just sumblime.

Without wanting to sound like some wannabe working-calss hero or whatever, it makes me think of my background - always envious of the next man up, so to speak. Always wanting what they've got, etc.

And as Weller pointed out in his book, he wanted to point out the irony of the bible implying that all men were created equal. If only.....

Brought together by religion in a way, but divided by status and class... and envy.

  • That doesn't make you sound like that, mate - I thought that was a spot-on analysis of this track. I totally agree with everything you said.

You only have to take a look at how screwed britain is now (as well as the rest of the world) in terms of the rich/poor divide.

As someone once said - "all men are created equal. Trouble is, some are more equal than others"

    Thanks for the comment ;)

  • As good as it gets, should have been an A

side. young weller was a genius.

  • Completely agree on both points. Thanks for the comment ;)

  • fine song from a fine album! GODBLESS YA!

  • You're welcome, Brother - have a good one. Damn fine channel, btw ;)

  • "that god created all men equal" great lyric, but sadly forgotten in todays world!

  • Amen, Brother - all too true

  • Thanks m8, brings back many a memory of my youth lol

  • Thanks from here too.

    Nice one.

Na na na na naa, na na na na naa....

  • More than welcome, mate ;)

  • thanks for the upload mate ;-)

  • No worries man. I checked all over and couldn't find a studio/decent version anywhere.
