@zwerty007 4got to mention RDJ owns the label this was published on. the tuss is also cornish slang for erection and lets have a guess who comes from there.
Of course this Aphex Twin! Those who know his style and sound know. If it is not AFX, then RDJ must sue them for every single predictable beat, sound and style he has ever done (Well since and after Analord). The Tuss has moments of Brilliance, but like most legendary artists, he's had better days!

Aphex Twin is Aphex Twin. Afx is Afx. Power-Pill is Power-Pill. Bradley Strider is Bradley Strider. The Tuss is The Tuss.
The first 4 is Richrad D. James, but the last is Brian Tregaskin, Karen Tregaskin, and their son Patrick Tregaskin. If you can't accept this you're a moron. Seriously.
"All Tuss tracks are published in the BMI Repertoire under the name JAMES RICHARD DAVID (BMI).[4] For example, the track "Alspacka" from the Confederation Trough EP has JAMES RICHARD DAVID listed as the Songwriter/Composer." come on now mate. no need to call anyone a moron, if its published under his name then it doesn't really make sense that it would be anyone else.
At around 3:27, you hear a high pitched sound that bounces around octaves. I've only ever heard this sound on Aphex Twin's Drukqs album. I've heard Aphex Twin recycle sounds for different pieces, such as using the consonant samples in 'Complex Mathematical Equation' and the "I'm taking control of the drum machine" off Drukqs. I am therefore forced to deduce that the Tuss is infact Aphex Twin. I am in no way an expert on this matter, though.
lol, yeah i like Ae more than Aphex. Man, i like Ae more than anything! i assume i was drunk when i typed above words. trying to be ironic, don't usually use the phrase 'own'
Live, Autechre own anything electronic, in that case i have to agree ;) Thumbs up, because i know what you mean! Its almost blasphemy to compare Aphex with Autechre, they both influenced eachother. Autechre are better performers, APhex is the better composer..
I can't find my initial comment, but I do agree with every word you say. Ive seen them on every tour they done apart from gigs they were doing round time of Incunabula & Amber, although I was listening to these when they first came out. Fortunately, for the sake of your well constructed point, it's pretty well established that, & known that Ae are the fucking shit when it comes to live electronics. Going to Warp20? the Sheffield one is August 7th & 8th
ah man! i heard that The Tuss is a new alias for AFX's stuff. he said he wanted to do release something soon and it's just his style to release something quietly like this.
I gotta pick this one up anyway, man. This is the first I've heard from the record but already I'm hooked.
When I looked up "cerebral noise records" just to find out that it's actually EAP or "noise" that your talking about, I nearly spit out my frosted flakes. Are you kidding?
"alot of the releases on it could be an extension to the analords if wanted, no one would be able to tell the difference if the artist name was kept anonymous..."
lol. EAP is just another Aphex Twin worshiping fan boy who only starting making that kind of stuff after the Analord records. Some of his stuff if OK at best.
When I say "the snare rush is distinctive" I'm not talking about quality of the 808 snare, you dipshit, I'm referring to the snare pattern itself, it's a 10 note highlighted snare rush that RDJ has been pretty fond of since the Analord records and it's not a pattern that is heard very often.
Yeah, this "analogue, acid" style of music has been around for a couple decades but the majority of it (in my opinion) is garbage. A monkey can take an 808, a 303, some effects gear and pump out some simple bullshit that will get the club moving. Rushup Edge and Synthacon 9 in particualr are on another level.
There is no category for this stuff, the sound is completely alien.
well its clear that you haven't been exposed to any proper analogue from reading your comment. i have listened to many styles growing up, but i distinctly remember being shown alot of random analogue, and not cheesy acid-house crap. I just find it a bit ridiculous that you can call it alien. Maybe to you it is, but to me its far from it, just sounds like a newage version of analogue with immaculate sound quality. I don't hear anything 'new' there at all.
Anyone who doesn't realize this is RDJ after the first 30 seconds must be new to AFX music.
Sure it sounds different than anything else, but it still has that AFX charm to it. Richard has re-invented his sound once again, and it sounds sublime.
''Nothing sounds like this'' > sorry but this is not true, this analogue style has been around for a long time. The only difference is that this is produced really well sound wise. also there are plenty of people who have listened to afx from the start and still doubt its him, to say you gotta recognise its him after 30 seconds is a bit ridiculous. there has been serious hardware around for roughly 2 decades now. its not even worth striking up debate about it anymore...
haha thats truely ridiculous to use something like that as reasoning. that 'distinctive' snare sound you are talking about is hardware man, sounds like a 909 or 808. its certainly not trademark afx when its used just about everywhere else in the electronic genre... its very common for different artists use similar techniques. im not disputing that its afx or not, i'm just saying, that what you said is an over exaggeration. afx is not the only one using those snare techniques.
want to list a couple of artists or tracks that sound like this. im not saying this for arguementative purposes, i just want some more artists to add to my collection of vinyl.
thanks, but i was asking the guy who was on everyones comments that said things like "nothing sounds like this" and he was saying, "yes there is a million non really popular idm artists that are just as good as the tuss" so i wanted to know who all these guys where he was raving about and not mentioning.
industry. he can do what he wants to do. maybe he just gets 5000 hits at yt and not 5 million...he obviously doesn´t care that much about that and money. that´s why i like him and not "only" his music!
@AugZF lol yeah but keep in mind, people also said that Burial (yeah THAT burial...the one that did "Archangel" and people went nuts over) was RDJ as well. I mean, I love that Burial record and I love all of RDJ's works but it was obvious that they were not the same person. So I need proof these days before I say it's RDJ. Although some of the Canyon Second Acid stuff is RDJ-esque in places.
This is a typically amazing tune by Aphex Twin. If you're paying attention, he slips in a hint of the melody breakdown at about 3:11 before handing it to you later on. This sort of thing is what seperates him from the rest. Album of the year. Don't forget to check out the Confederation Trough EP too!
Also, if you like this album, you might like druqks also, which is wayy harder but engineered with more precision and talent than anything else you've ever heard.
thats not that genious, he probably just wrote the melody and then got bored or wanted to carry the track on so left it out for a bit. This technique has been used through music for a long time, also, now you've figured out that technique, you could do it.
In my personal opinion, this track is nothing special, I admire Aphex for some of his other aspects in his earlier work (especially Druqks as you mentioned), things I will never work out or be able to copy.
for sure, people are glorifying it simply because its afx, this style has been around for ages, afx brought it to attention, so he created it in most peoples eyes. Which is very stupid, and pretty insulting to the genre and many artists that make similar style. i mean check out some of the stuff on cerebral noise records, alot of the releases on it could be an extension to the analords if wanted, no one would be able to tell the difference if the artist name was kept anonymous...
Who gives a fuck who it might be? The track is phatt!

I just find it a bit ridiculous that you can call it alien. Maybe to you it is, but to me its far from it, just sounds like a newage version of analogue with immaculate sound quality. I don't hear anything 'new' there at all.

plus those snare rushes are all over the Analord series.
dreamer178 3 years ago
Anyone who doesn't realize this is RDJ after the first 30 seconds must be new to AFX music.
Sure it sounds different than anything else, but it still has that AFX charm to it. Richard has re-invented his sound once again, and it sounds sublime.
Nothing sounds like this.
dreamer178 3 years ago
''Nothing sounds like this'' > sorry but this is not true, this analogue style has been around for a long time. The only difference is that this is produced really well sound wise. also there are plenty of people who have listened to afx from the start and still doubt its him, to say you gotta recognise its him after 30 seconds is a bit ridiculous. there has been serious hardware around for roughly 2 decades now. its not even worth striking up debate about it anymore...
okidot 3 years ago
Oh, sorry. I meant to say "8 seconds in", not 30.
Come on man, the snare rush at 6 seconds into the song is extremely distinctive and can be found in just about every Analord track.
dreamer178 3 years ago
haha thats truely ridiculous to use something like that as reasoning. that 'distinctive' snare sound you are talking about is hardware man, sounds like a 909 or 808. its certainly not trademark afx when its used just about everywhere else in the electronic genre... its very common for different artists use similar techniques. im not disputing that its afx or not, i'm just saying, that what you said is an over exaggeration. afx is not the only one using those snare techniques.

want to list a couple of artists or tracks that sound like this. im not saying this for arguementative purposes, i just want some more artists to add to my collection of vinyl.

Aphex Twin, AFX, Caustic Window, Polygon Window

thanks, but i was asking the guy who was on everyones comments that said things like "nothing sounds like this" and he was saying, "yes there is a million non really popular idm artists that are just as good as the tuss" so i wanted to know who all these guys where he was raving about and not mentioning.
Quadrange 3 years ago
i'll say it again. nothing does sound this this. no other music is on this level.
autechre, sp, u-ziq...they're good, but not even half as talented as AFX.

rdj or not...it sounds like him, just a bit
more punk attitude to it than the official
recordings. but who cares? either you like
that music or not. whatever rdj does...this
music or nothing...he´s a winner in my eyes.
he doesn´t prostitute himself to music-
industry. he can do what he wants to do. maybe he just gets 5000 hits at yt and not 5 million...he obviously doesn´t care that much about that and money. that´s why i like him and not "only" his music!

Canyon Second Acid <- type that in the search, i think it is RDJ too
AugZF 3 years ago
@AugZF lol yeah but keep in mind, people also said that Burial (yeah THAT burial...the one that did "Archangel" and people went nuts over) was RDJ as well. I mean, I love that Burial record and I love all of RDJ's works but it was obvious that they were not the same person. So I need proof these days before I say it's RDJ. Although some of the Canyon Second Acid stuff is RDJ-esque in places.

@AugZF Exactly its Aphex Twin, RDJ and The Tuss is just another pseudonym of him

Also, if you like this album, you might like druqks also, which is wayy harder but engineered with more precision and talent than anything else you've ever heard.
syrus3k 3 years ago 6
thats not that genious, he probably just wrote the melody and then got bored or wanted to carry the track on so left it out for a bit. This technique has been used through music for a long time, also, now you've figured out that technique, you could do it.
In my personal opinion, this track is nothing special, I admire Aphex for some of his other aspects in his earlier work (especially Druqks as you mentioned), things I will never work out or be able to copy.
cuboidatom 3 years ago
for sure, people are glorifying it simply because its afx, this style has been around for ages, afx brought it to attention, so he created it in most peoples eyes. Which is very stupid, and pretty insulting to the genre and many artists that make similar style. i mean check out some of the stuff on cerebral noise records, alot of the releases on it could be an extension to the analords if wanted, no one would be able to tell the difference if the artist name was kept anonymous...
