I don't remember this sign off, but then again I didn't stay up until 2am back then. I think all TV signed off around 2am even local channels. Why do people need to be up past then? Get to bed!
My parents had cable in the late 70s. the old brown box with buttons connected to the cablebox with a wire. HBO was the ONLY channel and it shut down just before 2 am. Why do I remember this? My father worked from 5pm to 2 am. Thank you for posting!
@annaeharrispink Most of the time, the carrier was just cut and you got static. Even into the 1980s, it was common for many stations to go dark overnight.
Damn this is a throwback. I didn't even realize pay channels signed off..lmao. We didn't get cable till 1981 or something. I wonder what year this is from?
this is such a porn beat. I assume by this hour it was some funky sexy movie, followed by ads that say 1-900 lick me? then the famous mult color off the air sign that gooes riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing
Wow Awesome! I didnt know HBO was out in the 70s. I thought it came out in the 80s or something. But then again, I wouldnt know, I was born in the 90s :)
I figured that this channel wasn't always full service, but this is a pretty neat sign-off.
My favorite one is still fX network (1994 until it was revamped in '97) sign-off, with the title cards of their TV shows played over a whistling of "Star Spangled Banner," followed by a quiet, "Good night!" before cutting to an infomercial. Ah memories!
I didn't realize HBO signed off so "early" - midnight? For me, that's still fairly early in the evening - I'm a night owl, and love staying up till 3 am, so anything on TV is a blessing, but I usually find Bad Movies at that hour.
Now if anybody can dredge up those intermission clips they used to play on HBO way back in the day I would be in nostalgia heaven. I'm talking about the 10 or so minute films they played between features. I particularly remember one showing the Museum of Modern Art, plus one with Greenwich Village. This would be from around '77.
The logo at the end was the first HBO logo, before all the letters were separated. Also, Time/Life would soon merge with Warner and the resulting company still owns HBO and its networks.
Not only did HBO sign-off in the early AM, it also didn't begin its broadcast day until three in the afternoon. This was about 1979-80. Their motto was, "HBO People Don't Miss Out!"
Wow, this looks like something from "Seasame Street". Hard to believe that this came from the same network that now gives us "The Sopranos", "Sex In The City" and "Cathouse".
Wow....how do I long for the 80's. Never realised how wonderful and simple it was back then.

WOW I remember this.......once it signed off and adults were sleep....we'd flick it over to SkinaMax....... ;)

Another sign that this was the 1980s: the kissing spouses at the end are one man and one woman.

except there's not that much crazyness in it, but it just feels that there's nothing normal about it.
but it was the 70s, the era of mindfucks, so what do i expect.
