  • I see now that reading LOTR is like looking at a music score. This tale is meant to be spoken to you. Very musical.

  • I like to imagine it with less movement in tone and more pounding rhythm, seems more fitting to an army of giant trees. But still cool to hear the man himself sing it!

  • Whoa!!!!....the words have power.

on poem with much, much power!

  • To hear his voice bring his writings to life like this is truly a treat. :D

  • I wish the sound quality was better, but it's still intoxicating to hear this.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. It's incredible to listen to. I've loved many of these recordings, but the Entish one is the best yet.

  • WE COME!

  • It was a joke, son.

  • Why is there not a recording of him reading the entire series? His inflections bring the words to life in a way I've never imagined.

  • Well, AdoreYouInAshXI, you probably won't meet him in heaven, because there is no heaven, but you might meet him in the Undying Lands of Valinor.. and discover that Tolkien is indeed Eru Iluvatar himself!

  • EPICNESS Dude!!!!! I memorized this!:)

  • This is intense!

  • 0:06 horrible visuallization of Ents they are TREE PEOPLE not GIANT HUMANS!

  • that was awesome!

  • That chant should've been in the movie.

  • amazing thank you

  • Yes...seems a bit "hasty" LOL!! YEs...golden to hear...I think it's the only time you can understand his speech with ease. hehe ♥

  • This was great...if a little "hasty". LOL I <3 Tolkien, it's absolutely golden to hear the master read his own work.

  • @mrsbonniemoore Of course it's hasty, it's meant to be hasty. This is when the ents are angered, which is once in an age if ever.

  • What a man! Just an absolute genius. I never buy audiobooks, but I would if he had recorded one.

If he did and anyone knows of it, I would love to get it.

  • Just...wow!!! I wish he could read the whole LOTR trilogy to me =D He not only wrote amazing work but he actually reads it marvelously too!

    TO ISENDGARD!

And yeah I wanna dance to it too ;p

  • Ahhh.... there just will never be anyone as great as him agin... they better come ot with the fuckin hobbit!

  • Well, it's nice that you're so excited by poetry...

  • Activate sense of humor now.

  • i kinda want to dance to this....

  • I want to dance to this too!!!

  • HOOM!TO ISENGARD!!! Burarum!!

  • He would have been so epic at harsh metal vocals...

  • Epic indeed!

  • OOOh,I've got goosebumps too.I love the change in voice, from the reading which ambles along, to the strength of his voice in certain parts,it's cool!

  • Tolkien's voice is simply breathtaking!!!

  • Wow this makes me all goosebumpy....

  • Thanks for putting this up. I love the Ents!

  • It's so neat to hear Tolkien read these passages. Finally I hear them as they were meant to be.

  • Yes, but wouldn't the Ents speak slower? Not as hasty as the littler people.

  • Undoubtedly, you are correct. Perhaps Prof. Tolkien spoke more quickly for the sake of the hasty folk of the 20th Century. Hurry, hurry, run and scurry. Many of us would turn our hearing off before an Ent completed a single sentence.

  • I belive it was Pippin's recital, no?

  • Amazing.

  • bad ass

  • he makes it sounds musical :)

  • Musical indeed!!!

  • thanks for the post I never heard this clip till now

  • thanks for posting! what I wouldn't give to have heard him recite the lay of luthien- the english and the elvish verses that he composed. ah, maybe in heaven right? :)

  • Funny...the same thought was in my head. I hope I`ll meet him in one of his hobit holes...the one near Bilbos...he will be sitting there with Gandalf, Frodo, Bilbo, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Sam, Pipin, Merry and C.S.Lewis and other queer folk. Laughing, singing, eating, drinking, listening to some tales of his, and than going on an adventure. Hehe....yes yes...in Heaven...you are welcome to join! ;-)

  • I thought the same I'd love to know how hear him pronounce that language which he made. The lay is awesome but hard for me to read.

  • Haha, I love your comment.. I hope to meet Tolkien and all his wonderful creations in heaven one day too!

  • Sounds awesome... can"t wait : D

  • @VoteDrRonPaul Don't forget smoking! It couldn't be a true Tolkien adventure without it!

  • Maybe in the Timeless Halls! ^^;

  • Now this is real!!!!

  • I wish he could have narrated the Hobbit. . . and the Lord of the Rings. . . and the Silmarillion. . . and basically everything else he wrote. . .

  • Thank you so much for posting all these recordings!

  • this is the best thing ever. well almost. ive been looking for this ever since i lost an old record that had this and other tolkien readings on it. thank you for posting this! truly wonderful.

  • @StefanKoekemoer Same here. My old Caedmon records ( LPs) with JRRT reading from LOTR unfortunately got messed up. I think I bought them in 70s. It is so good to hear this again.

  • outstanding way of reading!!!

  • Simply fabulous! The way he reads it!

  • Wow!!! It's awesome!!! It's so great to hear his voice! It sounds just wonderful!

    GBY_OO

  • ...Above average for adding some appropriate Video to a really cool Audio for which there is none...

  • Ah, the sound of his voice is good. It's great to hear an author read from his own work. Good stuff!!! Thanks a lot for posting.

    :o)

  • Nice! Very nice!
