Finally! I find the original, not the remix version, which everyone else is posting! Nice choice of THX-1138... Chalk up Peter Gabriel with the likes of Queen, who used it as an inspiration for Calling All Girls' video.
Awesome video! And yes, it's loud...but it's rock...it's SHOULD be!
@MaysLilStar Unfortunatly, this is not the original. This is as close to the original as you'll find here. The reason I know this is by the drums. The original version was very tom-tom heavy VS this version which has more snare drum. The drum parts had a very heavy Phil Collins "In the Air Tonight" (the signature end part) feel almost to a point where people thought Collins was playing it. Also, the original doesn't have as much keyboard as this version. I still have the vinyl somewhere.
@johnduncan77 The answer comes from the fact that this version has cymbals. Gabriel wanted to emulate the cymbal-less sound from Peter Gabriel 3, so he kept it up on 4. Cymbals would not return to a Peter Gabriel album until So. It creates a very tribal sound. This version is also indeed much more keyboardy. Still, all of that just makes it work better with the video presented.
How people think Lucas' Star Wars is better than his THX-1138 is completely beyond me. To me, SW is like a child's imagination of Sci-Fi, with fantastic and goofy aliens and spaceship battles, whereas this film is an actual THOUGHT on the genre, like Soylent Green. And yet SW is considered the best Sci-Fi film ever made. I guess that just means people don't want to grow up.
@KingOfUm I imagine it's the way the story of Star Wars was told that captures everyone's interest. Having heard what the voice of the actor that actually "fleshed" the role of Darth Vader, and how consideration was given to doing the various scores heard throughout the film on synthesizer [and knowing what synths at the time of production were typically like (See "Moog Modular")], I applaud Lucas' decisions of how to tell the story... For they effected the final image, which is what he wanted.
Hmm, the video reminds me of Plato's Allegory of the Cave--the struggle to break free from an artificial world of shadows and illusions so that a single individual can be exposed to the light of the real world.
dude.... nice work on mixing one of my fav sci fi movies from my youth <yes i was a gamming egg head at an early age... so this and 2001 space oddisy ruled for me :)>... and im a huge gabriel fan.... so TWO THUMBS UP AND A DOOBIE SMOKED IN YOUR HONOR... giggles... till next time all keep joking and smoking
Crow, you MUST tell me where you found this version of the song! It's not the same version that was on "Security" or on "Phenomenon".... where did you get it?? I must KNOW!!
TERRIFIC VID!!!!!!JUST DISCOVERED THIS AND I MUST SAY THIS WAS AWESOME!!!NICE CHOICE OF SONG AND VERY ORIGINAL CHOICE OF FILM-MOST PEOPLE WOULD HAVE CHOSEN SOMETHING STUPID LIKE TWILIGHT OR A MORE MODERN FILM WHERE THE SONG DIDN'T FIT.AHHHH EARLY GEORGE LUCAS-DOESN'T GET MUCH BETTER THAN THAT!!!!
What an amazing song....this is everything out of PG i adore. The video is clever and very well made! Love the bass line during 1:22-1:40...so hypnotic!
I've been a Simon Phillps fan since the WHO. Levin's bass blows me away. I've seen so many versions, some good and some not so good. Peter Gabriel rocks.
i am having a hard time identifying this version. i own 3 versions: security, '85 remix, and phenomenon. it is not from the phenomenon soundtrack (remixed by robbie robertson), and "hit" contains the short version of that remix. it is also not the '85 remix found on the sledgehammer single. reportedly, the '83 remix on "shaking the tree" is the same as the '85 remix. i recently ordered "walk through the fire" 12" single, but the track info lists a 5:00 version.
This is absolutely the version that is on the Shaking the Tree greatest hits album. When I first got that album, I listened to this track non stop for about a month, I was obsessed with it. This is it.
@rhino1138 Wrong! It was "American Graffitti", which showcased what life was like for him in his late-teens in early-'60s Modesto, California. Unless you mean his college film... Which he made at MIT in the mid-to-late-'60s. The His first "Big-Screen" was AG, with THX being an elaboration he wished to do on his college film. I don't blame him for that because, well... Given the chance, how many of wish we could go-back & do-over what we did in college?
Well, some uneducated people might think "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" has soemthing to doo with THX1138. BUT like they might as well compary Britney Spears with Peter Gabriel. They NEVER ever encountered truly good music and truly good movies.
i am sorry about my uneducation ( I should blame complete My complete ignorance of which ) but THX 1138 is a movie of what, and would you recommend it to watch?
To be honest, it's good, but i didn't enjoy it. One of the movies which transports problems. If you like movies in a way of arts this is enjoyable and you should like social criticism. What I wasn't aware of, there are already some comments pointing out that this is a movie. Well, it was highly recommended that days. (By the way, I like "Charly and the Chocolate Factory" as well. But one cannot compare them)
Awesome song! Too bad it isn't the full version, but every other video is either of the remix or the Heather Nova cover :( so this is the best there is for now!
THX 1138-George Lucas, as usual, way ahead of his time. The film was panned and did poorly at theaters.
