Looks like my apple tree minus the algae or moss... I got wonderful apples last year, but need to prune it badly.. it scares me to prune, what if I do it wrong.. Great music..
@snaps81625 I understand why you would hesitate. Consider the fact that by pruning you are in fact extending the tree's life. The correct way to prune is, as you know, of all importance and you would be wise to buy a book regarding the subject. For further "youtube lessons" on apple pruning, please search for stephenhayesuk videos here on youtube. I learned most of what I know from him.
@Teorispa Thank you for your response, I did watch his video's after I left this post.. He explained it very well.. and LOL he had a English accent to boot. Thanks!

Just pruned the featured apples trees today. Didn't make a video because I don't have as much free time as I did last year and I have to make each day as productive as I can. The trees are doing great, as I expected there was a lot of new growth, which I used to regenerate the tree. Meaning I cut out large branches from spaces that would now be occupied by finger-thick whips, won't have as many apples this year, but later on the tree will certainly pay me back for my troubles.
I have checked out several "how to prune" videos, they are all dwarf type, none of them show full size trees, I have a very large deer population and if I grow or prune dwarf trees, I won't get a single apple! Heck , I wouldn't even have a single living tree. The Method shown here looks pretty, but is not practical for us. Where do I view full size trees before and after?
@circlecyamhill This is a full sized tree. I just converted it into a late open centered tree, because I don't want my father to have to climb up a ladder to get the apples. The main trunk begins to branch at about 5 feet. You might want to check out Stephen Hayes' videos on reclaiming some mature trees, check out "Apple tree restoration". There are 5 parts to it and one more showing how they did one year on.
I did this to the apple tree in my front yard and my father swore I gave it a death sentence. It was a drastic change, but the trees become so much healthier. I showed him your video to convince him that the tree was woefully neglected and I was trying to help it, but I'm not sure he's convinced. :D
@Marscow The only downside to this kind of pruning, in a healthy tree, is the quick appearance of new shoots. All my apple trees were pruned in this manner, and they produced plenty of fruit. This is a work in progress, as my plan is to renew most of the wood to get rid of damaged large branches that I couldn't get rid of because they meant so much to the structure of the tree, but might now be able to do, with a substitute branch (new shoot) to take its place.
@Teorispa My tree has several limbs that I am leaving solely for the structure of the plant, but so many of them are twisted and growing around each other. Some place where they have crossed, the wood is actually rotting and black on the limb. I'm still concerned the tree may not be salvageable. It's 30 years old and has never been pruned until a month ago.
@agrotis79 They are now in full blossom! They look great =) As expected there is a lot of new growth that will need to be tamed next year, but I can certainly live with that as I plan on some rejuvenation to get rid of some large branches to keep the tree accessible.
