As much as there is a lot of older music I love, there's a lot of music today I love. Good music is and always has been created. Not all music from all time periods is good. Not all 80s, 70s,60s music was great, etc. etc. The best stuff isn't necessarily what's popular. There are some good songs that are, this much is true, but you can't just say it's not good because today's is different which is what a lot of people do. Most of the stuff I listen to isn't popular, but some is.

Music appreciation and knowledge is significantly lower than it was in previous decades. Music has been taken out of schools and guitar hero has replaced real guitar as the popular "musical" instrument. Also the record companies are different, less about music and more about money (to compensate for loss of sales due to new technology). With the deregulation of the radio in 1995, variety in music was drastically reduced. The 80's were better time for music without question.

I'm not sure where you've been, but record companies have always been about money. Big companies are practically always about that. I'm not sure what schools you know of, but all the schools I have gone tohave thriving music programs, you just choose to take the class. Nobody thinks guitar hero replace guitars, and I know many who play real guitar, and variety in music is reduced since when? I can find plenty variety on the internet that is good. You just, have to look for it.
