@dogodudits obvi german but because it was designed but giorgetto an italian it was the best of both german engineiering with italian styling hope i helped u out
what a great sound! i think 5-cylinders do really have the second-best sound of all engine-layouts out there right after a 3-rotor rotary (20B) especially a bridgeported one!
@ivbeenshot Yeah, it's got the engine and running gear from an audi S2 wedged into it, thats why it's got the wide arches to try and widen the track to fit the S2 running gear in
How so? Explain why it would be better when they have the same power. Oh, and fyi, VR6 has MUCH better torque than the 16v. I've been working on VWs for over 11 years.
I've known Grant for many years ,lives a few miles from me.I saw this car about 8 years ago when he was building it and it was red....It has a 20V Audi Quattro motor, AWD and a masive turbo and NOS..........a true petrol head........DAVE
Its full 4wd. not had it out this year due to other ongoing projects but lets see what next year brings. Grant is a good friend of mine so i speak with a good degree of knowledge. it's definitely an inline 5 cylinder engine.
im sorry does anyone know if it has been converted to AWD or RWD.. because it has extremely good grip to pull off a time like it did let alone beat a AWD rexy haha....by the way ima huge fan of mk1 =D check out my video on them
we all know what the i5 is capable of. many race cars use it. i use it. inline 5's have an awesome power band. my car peeks tq at 2000 rpms all the way to 5000 rpms.
There is a replacement for displacement, it's called european engineering.
Worst case scenario might be the old Buick-designed 'Rover V8' which had around 3500cc and managed to push out 95bhp in the Range Rover.
Americans are great at designing low-bhp high-displacement engines. Yes, they can be modified (as will no doubt be pointed out by some yankee doodle dumbass) but European engines will always be superior regarding bhp per cc.
ps not all citizens of the usa are thick, some are ok.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
You sir, are an idiot (btw consider me a yankee doodle dumbass). The whole hp per cc line is old as dinosaur crap. More power's more power. If you make 500 hp with 3.4 liters of flat 6 and I make 750 hp with 8 liters of v8 that means I'm up 250 hp over you. Besides, one could argue that adding another atmosphere to 3.4 liters makes it a 6.8. So, the earlier statement stands correct. There is no replacement for displacement.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
xraycortina,
you have proven my point that you are an idiot. 750 hp is 250 more than 500. Thus, and pay attention, the 8 liter v8 makes MORE power. 250 hp more to be specific. So if you have a 3000 lb car with 500 hp and a 3000 lb car with 750 hp, both set up similarly I would be willing to bet that the 750 hp car would outrun the 500 hp car. If I could draw you a picture on here I would as it appears you need the help. HOW, in your world, does a 500 hp engine beat a 750 hp engine?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I agree, for f***s sake:
one point I am willing to concede, a smaller engine is capable of being more efficient due to less internal friction, BUT the smaller engine is incapable of creating the power that a larger engine can create, all things being equal. That is my point. So power per liter is a stupid argument when a larger engine makes more overall power, even if it makes less per cubic inch. I personaly am done with this argument, but thanks for playing.
Liked the 'discussion' but IMHO it should be about power/weight, that's what makes one faster than the other.. Power/volume is an economy issue.. not very suitable for dragracing
like the 3.4 makes more bhp for its size so if the 3.4 where to be made 8.0 then the bhp would be far higher than the (american) 8.0 v8,
the 8.0 v8 may have more power now granted but thats due to the fact its alot higher litre, if that same engines litre was say...downgraded to 3.4 then the bhp would be far less than the euro engine lol
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
dude... thats not how it works. American car companies can make small powerful engines too. Just look at the new cobalt ss. inefficiency increases the bigger the engine, making your little comparison completely irrelevant.
ok well the cobalt ss is still making 130 hp/L. I dont care if its turbocharged, and how did you come up with each bar of boost doubling horsepower?? You have to remember cost here, it is way more expensive to make power out of N/A and BMW can afford that and its reflected in the price. no BMW cost's 23,000 new. And if they did make one, they sure as hell wouldn't have a naturally aspirated one making over 100 hp/L. So therefore HONDA is better than BMW. that seems to be your thinking...
@xraycortina you dont know jack all m8 i own a VW TRANSPORTER SPORTLINE i ended up buying an audi R8 engine V10 and put it in the boot My van now has 510BHP and makes me laugh when people try to challenge me porsche boxers and then i rev the engine lol their faces

The original Mk1 was penned by Giorgetto Giugiaro in the 1970's for vw.

In response to, and quoting from your comment:
3.4 litres, flat 6, 500 bhp = 0.147 bhp per cc
8 litres, v8, 750 bhp = 0.094 bhp per cc
Thus, by your own statement, the european engine wins. Thus, European engineering beats USA displacement.

For f***s sake:
The point concerns power output relative to engine size.
Your 8 litre engine has 235.3% of the displacement of a 3.4 litre engine but only produces 150% of its BHP.
Therefore, it is less efficient relative to its size.
It would appear that we aren't going to agree on this, so perhaps it would be better to open the debate to public opinion.
Comments please.

I have just looked at the spec for the Cobalt SS. Its Turbocharged. Every 1 bar boost effectivly increases the swept volume by 2X ! !
Its 2 litres turbo and can only manage 260HP !
M3's are over 100hp/litre normally aspirated.
The Honda Vtec engines can also manage this.
European cars of around 2litres has that power in the 80's if they were turbocharged.
Audi Quatro
Sierra Cosworth
Lotus Esprit
Do Americans make normally aspirated cars with 111HP/litre like the Germans do!
Think not ...
