I wonder what legal reason kept this broadcast from using the name of Orson Welles. Talking about the War of the Worlds broadcast without mentioning Welles is like talking about the Book of Matthew without Matthew/
This one of my favorite episodes in American history. Never fails to make me smile; something about it is so innocent and yet so clever. It could probably never happen again, even with an elaborately coordinated effort. Probably the best prank anyone ever pulled on a large audience, in history. It's the little stories that amuse me so -- babysitters, old ladies, young men, lovers in parked cars. What a delicious event! Thanks, Mr. Welles!
In a way, I find this funny. How a person can be tricked into believing a story. Trickery of the mind, using all possible senses. The imagination is an incredible thing. And when let to wonder, it finds the unbelievable. A great story, read by great men.
I believe the people that paniced were the ones who hadn't listened to it from the beginning. They tuned in to the part where aliens were attacking the world and that's what set most of them off. And their families/friends who hadn't listened to the beginning called the people they cared about. After all, who could they call to see if it was real? So many of them had been shocked that an atomic bomb was real. The radio voices made it seem real. I don't know what I would have done either.
@ForkliftJoe He was one of my favorite actors. The kid that plays in the Twilight movies has his double-jointed hands. When James Coburn got older it turned out that his hands gave him a lot of pain from arthritis(sp). I hope the kid doesn't have it as well. JC was excellent in the, "Magnificiant Seven." His body was fluid. Tall and lanky. Does anyone know much about him? When he started acting and his last movie? I remember him in the movie with Mel Gibson. What was that called?
it should be called "The Night America Got Trolled" :D

Interesting using hydrogen as sabot propellant. Light gasses expand faster at a given overpressure.

the panegyric on atomic energy at the end was the best part. :D

First of the future? Hmph! People nowadays protest nuclear power and look towards wind and solar power.
