Even in defeat they made it clear they would fight to the last. Well, America had different ideas about sacrificing her boys in a war that was already decided. The atom bomb was a perfectly legitimate choice.

I lament the atom bombs, because the people bombed were women children and innocent men, mostly. The japanese committed crimes against China especially. But you have to remember most of the soldiers were drafted from criminal camps, etc. They were a pack of psychos. That is who was sent to fight. These were the enemy, not the women and children who did nothing and would never have committed such crimes, ever. A tragic case of innocents being unjustly destroyed for the acts of criminals.

@jentlee1, The American policy was to island hop to take islands that were strategically important and bypass those that were needed. Okinawa was required as the strategy was to use it as a major staging area to invade the home islands and to also cut off any remaining shipping traffic coming to the Japanese mainland.

@jentlee1 Actually, Okinawa was big enough to support the Japanese Army fro quite some time. There was enough farm land and wildlife to feed the army for many months and some think that they could have held out for yrs. I don't know how true that last bit is, but the Japanese had food supplies for 8 months when the battle started. Also Okinawa was needed for the invasion of Japan that never happened.

Britain then had to fight of the Lutwaffe, and our cilvilians being killed on the ground. Then in 1944 the allies landed not on 1945. The allies were also fighting in indonesia. Because only the U-boats had the power to cut off the lifeline of U.S. material & men that allowed Britain to keep fighting. Without that lifeline, Britain would've been lost. Without Britain, the European Western front would've been lost. Without the Western front, the Eastern front would've been lost. Then the WORLD war would've been lost.

In 1942, Without Allied operations in Africa, Britain, and the sea (Operation Torch, Daylight and night bombing raids, the Battle for the Atlantic) the Germans would've been able to devote its ENTIRE might to acheiving their their primary objective in Russia...Capturing the Russian oil fields. Had the Germans acheived this, the effectiveness & might of the Russian war machine would've been brought to its knees. Instead the German pushed stalled and the rest is history.

They were undoubtedly carried out by brave men but they were just suicide charges, the Japanese soldiers were bound to die and they didn't have a chance from the start, something that the western psyche has trouble with. The ones who suffered most from this tactic were the Japanese infantry, not the US ones.
