You saved me from almost working at this worthless company John, thanks. It's the only game store in my area, but I'll try play n trade when I have a chance.
I know what your saying man. I worked at gamestop for three years before I quit. But yeah man I hate going to gamestop and KNOWING what the fuck im doing and talking about and these guys try to push shit I dont need onto me. I cant go back to one gamestop because they asked me to buy a members card five times before I told this guy to eat my shit and die. The're greedy and dont care about the gamer. It sucks its the only place I can buy games locally.
I was never really bothered by the questions to buy stuff, I just always thought of it as they're just doing their job. But to hear how the company almost forces them to treat it like a money hungry business makes me mad at GS.
I've been to gamestop in both America and Ireland and I must say, I MUCH prefer the Irish gamestop. The American gamestop employees are VERY pushy, almost to a point where you'd actually think that they're trying to get rid of you. In Ireland, you go in, get the game, go up to the counter, exchange a few words with the employee (most of whom are gamers) who would ask you about the game as he/she's getting the disk/guide/whatever. There's always a happy buzz in the Irish gamestop, it seems
I stood at the counter and talked to the manager at my local Gamestop for about an hour about the military. I guess he didn't ignore me because I had just bought the Collector's edition of Skyrim
The best reply I've ever given a Gamestop employee for why I don't want the Edge Card: "I don't like "free" stuff LOL. Free stuff is for suckas." They just laugh at me but I know they are raging inside.
The Gamestop employees have been trying to get me to buy an Edge Card for the last 8 years. I have never succumbed. New employees could begin working at the store, and they quickly realize from current employees that I'm the guy that always says "no". Those bastards are persistent.
The only problem i had with GameStop was when i traded in brink 3 months after buying it for $60, i got $8 for it. they made a 52 dollar profit off me. also, i wanted cash, they gave me a gift card. i was PISSED. (but then again, brink sucked and there is a supply and demand factor so... i dont know)
This is very odd, I've never had this experience with the gamestop stores around here. It's completely fine for them to talk about games with customers and almost every single time I've walked inside, that's what they were doing if not talking to themselves (staff talking to staff, and including customers in their discussion as well BUT giving priority to people that need help, obviously).
It might just be at your gamestop, or at the ones run by money hungry assholes.
@S3raphyx Many times they will talk about games with customers...Its a friendly thing to do in terms of business, sort of like 'hey, lets be nice and talk to this guy so maybe we can sell an edge card or something extra'. If you pay close enough attention, they often sneak stuff like "hey why not put a reserve down for (insert game being conversed about here), if you do you get bonus content", and the untrained customer falls right into the trap.
@GTAfan421 Right but personally I don't see any problem with that. If you're already interested in the game you're talking about with them then why would they not ask you if you want to reserve a copy? They clearly see you're interested and their job IS to sell things, imo they would be stupid not to ask.
I don't see anything wrong with being nice to customers and in turn hope that they buy stuff. Good customer service should be rewarded. As long as they don't try to push things onto me Im fine
@S3raphyx Oh I agree, but there will be times where I walk in and this guy, man...he just pesters and pesters. I don't get mad because I know he'll get in trouble if he doesn't do that, but you know, it makes me want to not go there to get games. Especially considering I can pre-order games online, and go to any other game store near my area to get a lot of games for cheaper than what GS sells them for.
My gamestop doesnt suck o.o. they get most sells from video games because it's the only one in a 8 mile radius. They dont badger people to buy things and employees talk about games on the clock all the time. Like the opposite of where rambo worked.
I live in California John, and I was at my local gamestop, and had a full on conversation about Skyrim and Oblivion with the gentlemen who assisted me. Very odd.
I always hear these complaints about gamestop, but I've always had a good experiance with the guy I normaly have at my gamestop, the manager infact. He always cuts me slack if I need it, and he never tries to talk me into anything. Probaly because I know what I want, and what I'm getting when I go in. I get the rare new employee that'd get smart with me, or try to do the sales pitch with me. I just go away and come back when I know someone else is there. They normaly learn the first time.
This reminds me of how pro-wrestling companies are ran. Top writers don't know, or give a shit about wrestling, as a place like ECW or TNA that does either becomes that same bs to compete, or go out of business trying to appeal to the minority of TRUE fans left, while trying to convert the people blind to other products. Hopefully Play n Trade will succeed and stick around like ROH is currently.
Everytime i go to gamestop, they always, always try to get me to preorder a game i dont want such as MW3 or the new Assasains creed (no offense fans to the series) Good vid man
"Picture is from connecticon 2011. GS had the biggest table in the place but no one showed up to sit at it. I took over the table and sat for awhile handing out playntrade cards." Alright John! Stickin' it to the man!
You know the sad part is... I actually wanted to work at Gamestop, but after watching all these videos I'm glad I decided to never work or buy from there store again.
@darkomen46 I found out about Gamestop and their AWFUL business habits last year sometime when I saw SilentRob's Gamestop Rants. A lot of people didnt believe anything he was saying about the store until he showed actual footage of a guy punching him in the face because they sold his pre-order copy of Madden.
Yup, sounds like Game in the UK. I go in, get hassled by some employee who think they know everything, but Im laughing inside as I know more about the market and gaming than those idiots.
Classic Nazi retail philosophy - soulless, paranoid, and detrimental to both customers and employees. I give you a lot of respect for posting this and I hope Gamestop goes bankrupt.
A fun fact: some of those used games people trade in are stolen. One other GS worker told that it wasn't rare to get a bagful of a brand-new, sealed games on the same week they were published. Yes, trading stolen goods is a crime and the store principles dictated that they had to take those games in and sell them.
About 9 years ago where I used to live there was an EB Games as well as another game shop in the mall I used to go to, they actually cared about their customers and even at times told them to avoid games. Fast forward to a year ago and I finally swore off ever buying anything from Gamestop again, between the "pre-order" bullshit they peddle (Especially the "bonuses") infecting the gaming industry to their terrible customer service they are a company that deserves to die. Great video John!
@yetifarmer09 I agree at GAME whilst im buying a game they're in no rush and i can talk to them, there not there just to sell you things and they will tell you if something is bad
Got a friend who used to work at GS. Said the district manager was a dick plus someone lost their job because they didn't greet a customer (read: secret shopper).
I've witnessed employees pressuring children to pre-order M rated games, but that's the kind of thing that happens when the employees themselves are pressured to make sales. You certainly had an influence on my new perception of GameStop, John. Although GameStop did a well enough job of positioning themselves in an unflattering way. I wish there were PlayNTrades in my area, unfortunately there is no "Mom'n'Pop" gaming stores around here. Does PlayNTrade offer franchising, lol?
GameStop? yep that place suxs and i never liked it. i never buy stuff from them. what a awesome story that was and ironic too.thank u John for making this video and sharing your exp. about this nasty store.
i' ve been accused of being on drugs, refused service, and asked to leave for laughing a lil to loud so certain gamestops around the world are shit but not all some do have good people.
I' ve only bought 1 game at GS but I returned it, never even opened it. Cause I found a better deal at best buy. I knew they were utter shit from the beginning. Now I always get the best deals on AMAZON. Que se vaya a la mierda gamestop.
Excellent Excellent Excellent Shoot! I have been applying to every gamestop in the area while at the same time trying to find out what kinda work environment it is after hearing terrible stories. Now I can move on knowing that it truly isn't worth my time.
i can testify to all of this as i was also a gamestop employee....also as an employee you are able to check out certain games and take them home to play...and then you would bring them back they slap a sticker on the box that says new and they sell it as new even though you used it at your home..lol...terrible lien pricks..i felt i was made to be a liar so i just stopped goin in and took a different job
i have preorderd battlefield 3 from eb games which is the canadian version of gamestop there not as bad but i do see your point john about preordering a game because never know for sure if your going to like it or going to get it in the two day period. I will do it for the modern warfare 3 because i dont know if i will get it that week if i dont but other games i get this year like uncharted and assassins creed i will buy not preorder.
I still shop at my play-n-trade & both my gamestops, but I don't like how they just have employees their that don't know wtf type of game to suggest for your interest & to just have another employee help me. I had 1 person tell me "Personally I don't play video games, Im just here for a job" so i say "well you know work in a gamestop right, so you have to know something about video games to offer the customer. i mean that's like selling dodge neon compared to a honda civic of course better.
The only problem I really had w/ 1 of my 2 gamestops is that I went to 1 & I got hdtv cables for my ps3. 1 of 2 hdtv connections was broke in my tv & I tried both, I couldn't get a picture w/ the hdtv cables. I told the guy what happened & I wanted a refund which I did get was $30.00 for cables, he told it should have worked & i told him it didn't work. I shopped at amazon & got a 6ft cable for under $10.00 or more i think it was.
I enjoyed you talk about gamestop, but could you speak more fluid? Your pauses in-between every few words made this video longer that it should have been.
@skills2gunz I don't think he had everything written down, he was just saying it as it comes to his head. I don't know if he normally speaks like this but it's fine to me, just has a hard time getting the words together.
@llXxJBxXll Sometimes that is a good thing & when you get to know them really well & they know the genres of games you buy. It can be bad thing as well & some people just can't accept no as an answer. The 2 local gamestops as well a play n trade i shop I know the employees & they know me. They know the types of games I like & they persuade me to pre-order & then I buy it either used or new. The people in my gamestop I get along great with & they have to run a business even there low payed.
I have not really had a bad experience with gamestop and the people at my local gamestop would probably give me their honest opinion about games. You will find a lot of really bad people in every company that are trying to make others look bad. That said, I was appalled at what I heard John. If I were you I might have just stayed in the office where the guy was angrily trying to conference people in and make him look like an immature idiot to the higherups and constantly question the legality
there's no gamestop here in australia, of which i am now extremely grateful... but i imagine there are plenty of other game store franchises that are exactly like this, gamestop can't be the only one
real customers are more than just the moms.the dont have gaming conversations thing is stupid.when i was young my mum bought for me the gameboy and stuff but from then on i saved up money or worked to buy my games.that makes me a customer as well.they should treat everyone equally.and if you converse with your customer and they see that the people working at the store share similar interests they are more than likely to come back.
i have a play n trade next to my house and when RDR came out i went there, but for 2 weeks they didnt have it. so the guy tells me to go to Game Stop i looked at him as if he was crazy but i went there. it took almost hour to get that game in my hands just from all the stuff the guy at GS wanted to sell me
I'd shop at other game stores but GameStop is the only store that really sells them besides like Walmart and Meijer. I haven't had any problems with them either. They ask if you want anything else or suggest a preorder but not to the point where it's annoying.
Thank you for this video, sir. GameStop's role in creating the gamer culture where you rush through and trade in your recent purchase is why I do my best to avoid the stores completely.
I remember Nintendo making noise about how the used games market was cutting into their profits back in the early 90's. If only they'd known how small of a problem that market really was at the time, before stores like GameStop turned it into the monster it is today.
Most relaxed Sunday evening i ever had... delivered by: JohnRamboPresents... thanks i needed that! Found the story quite interesting ... do remember Phil telling in one of his vids about you loosing the job because of that event too.
John, excellent music, powerful story ...not many have the guts to stand up against the system & better yet come out of it with your dignity intact & your head up high - you totally did with the way you handled all that shit you went through..Freaking epic..Shitty GameStop..I hope you with this video inspire people in the same situation to do something about it!
Oddly enough, I actually know some of the ins and outs of how Gamestop works from the employees that used to work at the store where I live by. I believe that the formers employees were actual gamers. Now they are replaced by a bunch of people who are just pushing sales. Good thing though is that they can't screw me over because they know who I am.
GS in Norway are bad! i hate buying games there cause they are so F****** expensive! 599kr (NOK) that is around 100 dollars. ok... the shityest thing is that they open the game, take of the plastic and shit, and they take the game out and take codes out and put it out. so i pay almos ththe double for a Opened game here in Norway then for a New game in the US? Gamstop Suck! i don't know how they are not shut donw yet. but have boght a few games there cause i was desperate... but never ever more!
Wow, thank you @johnrambopresents for being so honest and open about your feelings and your testimony with gamestop. I'm an avid shopper there and I'm glad that the store I go to don't try that bullshit with me, but I guess they kind of know me already and know what I go in for, but who knows, they may be pulling that shit on someone else. Thanks John and plz keep making your vids.
Idk about this but the 2 local GS I go to Im pretty cool with the managers and they talk about games all the time. Also at my local GS they all have gamers working there... p.s. I live in AZ and I get mad discounts as well...
great vid john sorry to hear all that BS you had to put up with gamestop. They should of been appreciative to have such a friendly person working for them.
keep doing what your doing john we love your vids.
The culture at GameStop must have changed, or it's inconsistent from region to region. I shopped at one several years ago and while buying a game, I got into a conversation with the woman at the counter about games. She complimented me on my gaming knowledge and asked if I wanted a job there. I said no. Now I'm glad I didn't get mixed up with that company after hearing so many bad things about them in the past couple of years.
Yeah I just got done selling my barely functioning xbox 360 back to Gamestop for $90 with a coupon from their "power up rewards" bullshit (that they sold to me against my will)... Revenge is sweet.
PLAY n TRADE ftw. The owner gave me a free play n trade shirt. FUCK YOU GAMESTOP

Weird. Here in Finland every Gamestop employee i've met or talked with is a gamer :D
And the only thing they ask me when i buy something is do i want an extended warranty or a cheaper copy, if they have one.
Employees won't stalk you trying to sell you stuff.
Customers aren't pushed to buy anything.
But this is from a customers point of view, i have no idea what happens behind the scenes.
I'm not trying to defend the company, that's just how it is over here.

i can testify to all of this as i was also a gamestop employee....also as an employee you are able to check out certain games and take them home to play...and then you would bring them back they slap a sticker on the box that says new and they sell it as new even though you used it at your home..lol...terrible lien pricks..i felt i was made to be a liar so i just stopped goin in and took a different job

i have preorderd battlefield 3 from eb games which is the canadian version of gamestop there not as bad but i do see your point john about preordering a game because never know for sure if your going to like it or going to get it in the two day period.

I had 1 person tell me "Personally I don't play video games, Im just here for a job" so i say "well you know work in a gamestop right, so you have to know something about video games to offer the customer. i mean that's like selling dodge neon compared to a honda civic of course better.
wow85 5 months ago
The only problem I really had w/ 1 of my 2 gamestops is that I went to 1 & I got hdtv cables for my ps3. 1 of 2 hdtv connections was broke in my tv & I tried both, I couldn't get a picture w/ the hdtv cables. I told the guy what happened & I wanted a refund which I did get was $30.00 for cables, he told it should have worked & i told him it didn't work. I shopped at amazon & got a 6ft cable for under $10.00 or more i think it was.

John you are a very good at telling a story to people, you don't speak too fast, nor too slow. it's a smooth pace.

A Gamestop employe just pushed me into Pre-Ordering Mass Effect 3 .....
llXxJBxXll 5 months ago
@llXxJBxXll Sometimes that is a good thing & when you get to know them really well & they know the genres of games you buy. It can be bad thing as well & some people just can't accept no as an answer. The 2 local gamestops as well a play n trade i shop I know the employees & they know me. They know the types of games I like & they persuade me to pre-order & then I buy it either used or new. The people in my gamestop I get along great with & they have to run a business even there low payed.
wow85 5 months ago
@llXxJBxXll is that a bad thing ??
hollowichigo09 5 months ago
I have not really had a bad experience with gamestop and the people at my local gamestop would probably give me their honest opinion about games. You will find a lot of really bad people in every company that are trying to make others look bad. That said, I was appalled at what I heard John. If I were you I might have just stayed in the office where the guy was angrily trying to conference people in and make him look like an immature idiot to the higherups and constantly question the legality

so i guess im crazy now ;)
I boycotted gamestop a long time ago, because they fucked me over and
(at the time) I just didnt know better....
What i dont get is, why do big companys keep providing GS with exclusive deals, when the "used-game" market is hurting them?!
Probably just another lie to get more money....
Anyway, thx for ur honest view on the topic!
Kaitoking09 5 months ago
there's no gamestop here in australia, of which i am now extremely grateful... but i imagine there are plenty of other game store franchises that are exactly like this, gamestop can't be the only one

real customers are more than just the moms.the dont have gaming conversations thing is stupid.when i was young my mum bought for me the gameboy and stuff but from then on i saved up money or worked to buy my games.that makes me a customer as well.they should treat everyone equally.and if you converse with your customer and they see that the people working at the store share similar interests they are more than likely to come back.

i have a play n trade next to my house and when RDR came out i went there, but for 2 weeks they didnt have it. so the guy tells me to go to Game Stop i looked at him as if he was crazy but i went there. it took almost hour to get that game in my hands just from all the stuff the guy at GS wanted to sell me
unbentGODFATHER 5 months ago
