  • I actually wouldn't mind seeing you lampoon and reveal more truth about the crazies in the CRW (such as Dr. Kennedy), Prof . Feel free *evil grin* .

By the way, what does MTH stand for ?

  • 4:24-4:30

Quite interesting fact, because of modern knowledge of evolution scientists are able to switch on a chicken gene which results in the formation of teeth.

  • Please don't refer to this moron as Dr. A degree in theology is a joke, and he's probably earned his degree at some papermill school, anyway. He is beneath your rank as a professor at a proper university. It sounds like you have a cold. I hope you feel better soon.

  • @Newenlightenmentnow " It sounds like you have a cold. I hope you feel better soon."

Thanks. Fortunately, it was two years ago. I've recovered. :-) But I appreciate the good wishes.

  • Check out CHRISTIAN RIGHT WRONG AGAIN song on You Tube

  • I guess I've missed the point when being a "doctor" has obviously started to simply mean that one can read and write...

  • Fred Phelps is hysterical if you don't take him seriously.

  • Don't forget the christian left nuts,it's true there are more right wing religious nuts than the left but they do exist.

  • @DarthKreeg

At least they do a tiny little bit more what Jesus preached.

  • Wow. All of those quotes from Dr. Kennedy's books were within a range of six pages. It's hard to believe that one could claim that anybody who has the ability to write such BS in such a high concentration was not crazy.

  • @BassAceReturns LOL! True enough.

  • I thought Dick Cheney was a pro choice vice president

  • I don't know if I should laugh or cry, or just be completely embarrassed for these people.

I find it ironic that Atheists research other religions, and science... where as most Christians do not even read the bible, and know nothing of science.. yet they claim the bible is the word of god and science is lies.

  • Anyone know the name of the song used for the intro?

  • @VapidZero "Beautiful Liar"

  • @ProfMTH Thanks a lot, great videos btw, keep up the good work.

  • @VapidZero Thank *you*.

  • Anyone who could accuse ProfMTH of being disrespectful has either not watched his videos (or it must be their first time on the internet and they are living in Victorian England). I have watched ~50% of his videos and I have never seen anything but class. Everyone who has been criticized or insulted in any video was asking for it and evidence has supported the criticism.

  • @jimbrown257

    Cont:

I would be interested to see if Bberchin could keep such restraint if a large percentage of Americans were claiming he was a threat to the American life because of who he is. Not to mention the fact that they would also be claiming the moral high ground while doing so.

  • @jimbrown257 Thanks a lot for the comment and the very nice words.

  • One of the best rebuttals and eloquent argument ever heard by me

  • Thanks a lot.

  • What is it with so many of these far far right wing christians and their obsession with a perceived apocalypticism whenever they are not in power?

It is the end times all the time for someone out there in the world I guess.

  • Thanks a lot.

  • Why does the Right Wing and Christians right always bring up Canada?

This is the last place that would accept their interpretation of Bible or government; we are a far more open society and they always drag us into their lies.

Does the Right wing still believe in Manifest destiny?

  • "Does the Right wing still believe in Manifest destiny?"

"It is impossible to rightly govern a nation without God and the Bible."

    George Washington

  • That is not a good answer, it seems you don't know what Manifest destiny is.

Manifest destiny is the idea the USA will take over all of North America, many of the early US leader believed in it.

  • "The government of the United States is not in any sense founded on the Christian Religion"

    ~George Washington

"Religious controversies are always productive of more acrimony and irreconcilable hatreds than those which spring from any other cause."

    ~George Washington

  • I watched all three and you are 100% correct he is reactively protecting; the indefensible Christian Reich.

  • Also he quotes the bible incessantly like it is some kind of proof when it is not. If we present a fact they want proof and lots of it; then they quote the same story book (Bible) as undisputable proof.

The only way this can be fixed is by improved education. (Critical thinking is not their strong suit.)

  • Thank God there are intelligent, articulate and well spoken people who are willing to take these uber-rightious neo-religious nuts to task!

  • Bravo!

  • As a home care nurse, I cared for a fundie christian patient that was a big D. James Kennedy fan for 9 years. In that time I was subjected to many of his crazy assed rants. including an entire sermon entitled "the Myth of Heterosexual Aids". Prompting me to email asking that he stop such bullshit because, one of my sane friends might have sex with someone who trusted him.

  • I for one want to thank you for not respecting D. J. Kennedy and his ilk. We need to recognize the dominionists for what they are and not soft peddle it.

He was crazy, but he was not an isolated case, by far. It's all very sad and scary. And I think we need to be aware of how many americans DONT think that dominionist right wing thinking is crazy - it isn't as obvious as it seems!

Thanks for the videos and the links. Theocracy Watch seems to have a lot of good information as well.

  • You're welcome, Pookabun. I completely agree. Thank you for taking the time to comment and share your thoughts.

  • Such a cutie and so polite!

Something to possibly be aware of... my computer may have been virused while I was reading on either the Theocracy Watch site or the Dark Christianity site (!). I suddenly had some very strange behavior from my computer which I will look into, but that's what I was looking at when it happened (both sites at once, so IDK). It seems right up the fundamentalists' alley to virus the non-believers and scare us away from reading the material available about them.

  • Under the heading of "false alarms" comes "virusing for Jesus"!

It turns out that on Sat am, there was a google glitch that scared a lot of people, including me!

So, I guess it's safe to go back into the water of knowledge...

    :)

  • ever notice how hot all the right-wing women are? Ann Coulter? Elizabeth Hasselbeck? Laura Ingraham? Who do the lefties have? Rosie O'Donnell? they're all dyke, butch or jew on the left. There's nothing there, which puts into perspective why liberalism is where the gays flock together and spill the seed. Leftwing argument: "we're all entitled to the same standard of living, yadayadayada, abolish religion, al qaeda has rights and the private sector doesnt"

  • Maybe you think this will get you into "whacky comments" at some point, VoiceOfModeration. However, what is far more likely to be the result of your spewing such nonsense on my channel is that you're going to get yourself blocked again. I trust I've made myself clear.

  • LOL Ann Coulter is an obvious transvestite! Just look at that adams apple, need I say more?

  • The right wing is completely out of touch, religion has no place in the government, and their should be a law against that.

  • Therefore, it was implied that homosexuality is morally wrong if morals are to be based in reproductive fitness.

I don't object to homosexuality. I just wanted to point out the "crazy" guys self contradiction there.

  • Somewhere between 4:00-4:30 you were quoting the "crazy" guy about how the Theory of Evolution lead to the development of all sorts of social movements including homosexual liberation. I can't remember the article now, but it basically postulated what is morally right and wrond and how to define it in biological terms. One part from that - if you are engaged in activity that will increase the propagation of your genes then you are morally right.

  • Yep, he's crazy. Crazy as a sh*t house rat. And dangerous - clearly a Christian equivalent of Bin Laden, Khomeini or any of the other psychotic Wahabist mullahs.

I almost wish there was a hell so he could be rotting there for his hate.

But he is just worm food. Good riddance.

  • Let's see what Dr. D. James Kennedy has to say about all of this:

    Dr. Kennedy?

    Dr. Kennedy?

    Dr. Kennedy?

He doesn't seem to be answering. Here, let me poke him with this stick.

Gee, for some reason he's not moving, either..

  • Wow... I mean there's so much that I could say, but other people have probably said it better. But I just can't believe that he'd so blatantly ignore the church/state seperation when it isn't in his favor, but would (probably) go running to it when it is in his favor.

  • D. James Kennedy was another batshit crazy Christian leader who was mortified of change. Even if homosexuals were out to destroy the institution of marriage, they don't do a very good job explaining why that's such a bad thing. Again, they're basically arguing that if society was different, then it would be different, and different is scary!

If less people want to get married, then so be it. It won't affect the lives who those who embrace it in the least. It's just fear-mongering.

  • I say that Liars in the Christian Wing (part 1) did seem out of character next to ProfMTH's other videos so I'm glad he made this response. Thanx ProfMTH.

  • Yeah ok you have 'evidence' but just like all your other videos attacking the bible this attack of Dr James Kennedy is unfounded

firstly the quotes were taken out of context

    secondly he was being metaphoric

thridly you dont have faith which is what you need

Its kind of like when you go to the movies and you where the 3d glasses well when you join christianity jesus gives you a set of jesus glasses and it is through these eyes you see the world now Dr James

  • Open your eyes man and follow my logic

The Man is a priest hence a representative of god thus his word is inspired by god he is also a christian and a beakon of light to the faith thus he must be telling the truth thus what he is saying is true thus you must be wrong thus we must stop all liberal and democratic processes to stop the brainwashing after all "God said it Guess that settles it"

  • But seriously democracy can be bullshit best system thus far but if I offend religious faith and call them brainwashed, wrong and ignorant about the ACTUAL world then lets face it I will be right but then they can complain because ive been politically incorrect yet throw on a white dress get 70 people listening to you on a sunday with a bible in your hand and you can hate on who you want... Some liberal group should try take one of these fuckers to court seriously what they do is criminal

  • Hmmm... Was he saying that the gay "agenda" is that everyone gets married to a person of the same sex? That's sort of an odd accusation.

  • "Hmmm... Was he saying that the gay "agenda" is that everyone gets married to a person of the same sex? That's sort of an odd accusation."

Some make that claim, but that's not what Kennedy was saying -- at least that's not what I understood him to be saying. His claim seemed to be that homosexuals seek to eliminate marriage entirely and they're pursuing that goal by seeking the right to marry. Nutty, eh?

  • Love seeing you hand that pompous pseudo-intellectual fool his hat.

  • I only have one word for this video and then I'm done with this- presuppositions.

  • How cryptic, Bberchin. I'd ask you to explain, but you've declared yourself "done with this."

  • You're a professor- I'm sure you can figure it out. ;)

  • I learned long ago that when someone is being cryptic, he or she usually doesn't have an argument, but is merely trying to *appear* to have one. Did I figure it out? ;-)

  • Not at all- Your presuppositions have led you to the conclusions you made in this video. What's more, they not only led you, but were instrumental in twisting words and taking statements out of context to make them sound the way you wanted them to sound in order to solidify your position. Not only are your presuppositions false, they are also unchangeable.

  • Please provide an example of my "twisting words and taking statements out of context" in this video, Bberchin. Spare me the generalities and for once at least attempt to demonstrate your point with specifics. Thanks.

  • Give me a chance to watch the video again and I will do so.

  • Sure. Take your time.

By the way, in less serious matters, were you happy with the "Idol" result?

  • I was very happy and quite surprised with the Idol results. I really thought Archie was going to edge him out. I guess my faith in the judgement of pop-America was restored (very little)!

  • As was mine. I suspect Mr. Cook has a great career ahead of him.

  • Apparently bberchin takes a while to watch videos again and post responses about them. He said, 2 weeks ago, he would respond to his otherwise unfounded claims after he watched the video again

  • He opted to send me a private message, Sapperblogs.

  • Kind of a shame to have the debate go on, then end in PM... but oh well, to each his own I suppose

  • Sorry to disappoint you, but I didn't realize there was an audience to this comment chain. Sometimes it's easier to complete these through PM's because 500 characters can get cumbersome.

  • We wonder why you even respond to people that make idiotic claims. Like you are disrespectful. When they dont attack any real points you made.

We love your videos and wish you would ignore the nay sayers with nothing better to do then to attack your usage of words. Insane is a word that comes to mind when we think of how you must feel getting attacks like this that dont have any real point just a lot of feel good fluff on the attackers end to know they tried to take down an atheist.

  • Well, Tacos25n28, I responded because it seemed Bberchin truly believed that there was nothing more to this than name-calling. The presented an opportunity to delve a bit more deeply into the particulars of one Christian Right leader's stuff. In other words, I saw this as an opportunity for a substantive presentation, not just a response to a complaint.

  • Also, Dr. Kennedy sounds like an evil Kermit the Frog trying to hypnotize people into a xenophobic attitude toward homosexuals. Also, he said evolution was responsible for Communism AND Fascism??? Those 2 political parties are polar opposites!!! Evolution must be like a virus if it can penetrate THAT divide. ;-)

  • Funny how he called atheists as "scarce as a hen's tooth" when the deactivated genes in birds for growing teeth is evidence that they are descended from dinosaurs, thus supporting EVOLUTION!!!!

  • lol Nice point, Bu1ckgnx.

  • Naturally, D James Kennedy can be BOTH crazy AND a liar.

  • True enough. I was proceeding from a theory of diminished culpability vis-a-vis crazy people.

  • Please, someone tell me of a televangelist that isn't off his or her rocker. We need a 'talk soup' type show for these folks. It is so taboo to slight these people on TV. (Thank god for Bill Maher) There are about 12 of these shows on at any given time, any day of the week. Many, if not all, are blatently cheating people out of their money. Pretending to heal seriously ill people may be as mean as it gets on TV. They are funny in the same scary way that Bush is funny.

  • "There are about 12 of these shows on at any given time, any day of the week."

Indeed. Well, we get more of what we subsidize, don't we? If that tax exemption were removed, I suspect many of these "evangelists" would be off doing different things. They might even have to get real jobs like regular people.

  • "My apologies, it's late and I'm tired."

lol Not to worry, JW. I knew what you meant.

  • ProMTH, did you get my e-mail about why did jesus preform his miracles???

  • "ProMTH, did you get my e-mail about why did jesus preform his miracles???"

I did. Did I not respond to it? I thought I had. In any case, I'm considering it as a video topic.

  • Respect and integrity are earned, if given freely they mean nothing.

Atleast Kennedy nows how important sex is for the diversity of life.

Is it just me or is it incredibly erie how Kennedy is WAY UP there on this pedestal belting out what to think about gays? Just like a dictator...

ProfMTH eat some chicken soup, and take your vitamin C, you sound horse and a little nasally.

All people that are against gays are ALL exactly like fred phelps, the only difference is how public they are about it.

  • "ProfMTH eat some chicken soup, and take your vitamin C, you sound horse and a little nasally."

I ate almost nothing other than chicken soup last week while I was sick. I don't know if it really helps with a cold, but it felt good going down and was pretty much the only thing I wanted to eat. I'm feeling way better now, Bayer. Ugh. I *hate* it when I get a cold. It's always a freakin' event. lol

  • Bravo, Prof!

  • Thanks very much, Lensherr82.

  • First epistle of Plato to the Americans: for it is written: "He that hath wisdom, shall be rewarded with a fabngroovy terrace with kickass views!"

  • Karl Marx sent Darwin a signed copy of Das Kapital. Darwin accepted it graciously, but never read it, as Darwin himself supported Laissez-Faire Capitalism. Not only that, but Capitalism is often portrayed as "Social Darwinism" by it's detractors. It would be nice if people could at least make up their minds about which opposing economic system to blame Darwin for.

  • "It would be nice if people could at least make up their minds about which opposing economic system to blame Darwin for."

Quite right, Shawn. Of course, what your comment brings into sharp focus is the fact that the leaders of the Christian Right Wing by and large have no interest in facts, no interest in truth. It's all about lies and bullshit. However, they can only succeed if the member of their potential audience allow themselves to be duped.

  • One can not validly assign secondary characteristics to an oppositional concept unless it can be shown that the opposing characteristics are unique to the concept one is opposing. So, unless it can be shown that humility and the scientific method (the opposite of presumption) are UNIQUE to theism, it can not be said the arrogance and presumption are inherent characteristics of atheism. As it were, it is a simple matter of providing non-theist examples of humility and the scientific method.

  • MATT 7:2 RAAWR

  • I envy your abilty to manipulate multimedia in your videos. =(

Mine are just.. sub-par in comparison

  • Thanks, Kyon65. I enjoyed learning and experimenting with this stuff, but it's only in the last several months that I can honestly say I've liked the look of my videos. You'll get there. It took me almost a year to get to where I am now, and I still have loads to learn.

  • Heathen! Blasphemy!

    watch?v=CEz0QDSdpQU

  • Name calling truly is an unsavory tactic. Why, it would simply be awful to call this Dr. Kennedy a vile, scumsucking, detestable dirtbag. It would be rude in the extreme to note that he was a rotten, pus-filled malcontent with a jagged log shoved firmly up his ignorant, hateful, miserable ass.

Such language surely should be avoided!

  • "Such language surely should be avoided!"

    Indeed. LOL.

  • James Kennedy really is a honky tonk nutbag. Seriously crazy. The love child of the Riddler and rain main. A truly bonkers baboon.

  • "a honky tonk nutbag"

I'm not entirely sure why, but that has my laughing hysterically. I guess it just *sounds* funny. ;-)

  • Yes. It has no real meaning to me.

I am amazed that adults have these types of views. I am just about to turn 26 and I think my world view is so much more sophisticated than these people who are sometimes twice or 2.5 times my age. When I think of what I can learn in the next 26 years, I am excited. What have they been doing with their time. Telling lies to the public while secretly banging hookers and doing coke, I suspect. Not that I would care. It is the utter hypocrisy and dishonesty.

  • "It is the utter hypocrisy and dishonesty."

    Quite right.

  • .... at 4:20..... seriously... scarce as a hens tooth. i found that intresting because chickens do ahve the genes to make teeth which we would expect because they evolved from reptieles. they being chickens.

send me a message and i'll look that info up its in a youtube vid

  • My reply to Bberchin

"I respect you as a human. I have respect for Christians. Admittedly, I don't know much about James Kennedy. However, anyone, no matter how they try to attain the goal of injecting any religion into the US government is my enemy.

Despite the claims by Christian Reconstructionism supporters, America was not founded as a Christian nation. Many of the founding fathers were deists. Yes the majority of people are Christians but the government was founded as a secular gov."

  • i whole heartedly agree with your assesment of dr. kennedy profmth. i myself would probably go a step further and declare him stark raving mad :)

  • Given some of what he's said and written, Hellshade, I just might have to agree with you.

  • Thanks very much, Variablast. Feeling way better today, my friend. :-)

  • "The best part is, Phelps' ideology is fairly consistent with the Bible. It's simply a matter of language."

An interesting and insightful point, AgnosticMan.

  • owned

  • Thanks, Sittingbull09.

  • as much as i find it loathsome to admit,i can still to some degree understand how fundamentalist fall into homophobia.the holy book they are taught to unquestionably follow rails against it a lot.and when you seem to be biologically programed to be obsessed with getting into a woman's pants, someone who does not share your interest does seem a bit odd,but how much of a knuckle dragging idiot do you have to be to to be offended by that and feminism?

  • i mean i understand how guys attracted to guys can be a bit alien to ones thoughts, but women wanting the same rights and pay as men?how the hell does someone wanting the same rights and pay as a man make you think"leave it to evolution to give a bitch a crazy idea like that"

  • "...the holy book they are taught to unquestionably follow rails against it a lot."

The funny thing is, Nemo, that compared to other things their holy book condemns, homosexuality gets comparatively little play. Injustice to the poor gets mentioned way more, but how often does one see *that* getting mentioned by Dr. Kennedy and those like him?

  • How is the Communist Manifesto, written in 1848, influenced by The Origin of Species, written in 1859? I've seen this arguement many times, and completely fail to understand it. As far as I can tell, they took a political view with a negative connotation and said evolution has something to do with it.

  • "As far as I can tell, they took a political view with a negative connotation and said evolution has something to do with it."

Indeed, Facecageworshipper. And, of course, it's been a very popular propaganda ploy of the Christian Right's to link the things it doesn't like to communism.

  • Dr. Kennedy is crazy... among other things :D

  • Yep, C02Junkie.

  • Sounds like you have a bit of a cold, hope you get to feeling better man.

  • Thanks, Drackbaby. It's way better than it was during the week. Appreciate the good wishes.

  • articulate and incisive as always!

  • Thanks, Angryislander56.

  • "Evolution unleashed...feminism, divorce, homosexuality, and all the rest of those ills."

As if these things are beasts or slaves to be contained by a master.

  • "As if these things are beasts or slaves to be contained by a master."

You know that's *precisely* how Kennedy meant to portray them, Kachmi.

  • Great video, but of course Right-wing Christianity won't see anything he said as 'crazy' or 'out of touch with reality' at all..but see it as fact and IN reality.

    Which is even more scary.

  • The best part is, Phelps ideaology is fairly consistent with the Bible. It's simply a matter of language. If you read the Bible honestly, God DOES "hate fags". I think putting someone to death and calling them abominations is an indication of hatred. if Bberchin had the courage of his convictions, he'd be following in Phelp'ss footsteps.

  • // If you read the Bible honestly, God DOES "hate fags".//

No more so than he hates shellfish, menstrual blood, worship of other gods, all of humanity (except Noah) prior to the deluge, and (apparently) parts of the male wee-wee that he himself designed.

So let's get to the sign-making bro!

  • "So let's get to the sign-making bro!"

    LOL!

  • Great vid ProfMTH. D. James Kennedy is almost correct on one point. I wish my gay girl and boy friends were trying to make me more like them. If I were more like any of them, I'm certain I would be a much better person.

    5 stars

  • :-) Thanks, Kaszely.

  • Great points prof, You rock!!

  • Thanks, Agnosticman. You know about this stuff from the inside. So I appreciate your assessment.

  • I think most western European observers of United States politics are DEEPLY disturbed, by the efforts of the "Christian" right, to turn back time.

It is VERY disturbing that these wacko nut jobs ( anti science, anti reason ) have access to and influence within the corridors of power.

There is a perception that U.S. middle eastern policy is heavily influenced by fundamentalist Christians.

In the U.K. such people are laughed at.

    Fabngroovy terrace Prof!!

  • "There is a perception that U.S. middle eastern policy is heavily influenced by fundamentalist Christians."

The perception is correct. To be sure, it's not the only influence, but it is a strong one -- and one that doesn't always comport with the interests of the U.S.

    Thanks, Plato12000.

  • I couldn't agree more plato12000. Looking at the US from the outside, it is scary how religious leaders are so influential. It is worrying that the rest of the world receives so much media from the US and some of that Christian extremism is spreading to other first world countries. That is one of the reasons I engage US Christians on youtube. What else can an outsider do to combat this madness?

    Btw, great video, Prof!

  • Once again, you amaze me, ProfMTH! Another great piece of work. You're a master of your craft, sir! I'm so happy to live in Canada.

  • Thanks a million, Antichrist4Life.

  • Excellent video, well done.

  • Thanks, Brouhajoe.

  • "Seeing well researched videos from you are always a pleasure!"

Thanks, KT45. When I read things like Dr. Kennedy's LORD OF ALL, I truly have to concentrate because my mind is continually overtaken by the question: "People really believe this nonsense? Evolution is about sex?! It's not truly science?!"

  • "who was the hot pointer guy? ;-) "

    LOL!!

  • "Well done!"

    Thanks, 4McClain.

  • "I just love how he begins with a quote telling us unbelievers that were "evil" then says we should show the respect he does to us."

That's just it, isn't it, MilkEyedMender? Clearly, when I called Bberchin on his comment about the "primary characteristics" of the atheist personality, he didn't even connect to it. Methinks some believers are under the impression that their name-calling is truth-telling, while the rest of us are just being mean. Fascinatingly inconsistent stuff.

  • "... I wouldn't say that labelling someone something and name-calling is the same thing. If you'd called him a crazy motherfucker, that'd be name calling. ... Anyway. Kennedy WAS a crazy motherfucker. What a Froot Loop!"

    LOL. Thanks, Sayke.

  • "A atheist was as scare as a hens tooth"

Maybe because people killed them for heresy.

  • "Maybe because people killed them for heresy."

Yeah, funny how that doesn't appear to have crossed Dr. Kennedy's mind.

    :: rolling eyes ::

  • "After a great deal of study, I finally resolved my cognitive dissonance; I became an atheist."

Vulpix, you should drop a line to Coral Ridge Ministries to share your "testimony" of how Dr. Kennedy's material backfired.

  • "You are too kind. Crazy doesn't even come close. We have to invent a new word for that guy. He is as repulsive as can be. Another great video, by the way! :)"

    Thanks very much, Ivarbt. :-)

  • "A couple nuts are cute. :) It is when they have power that they are dangerous."

Exactly, Carloz. And they have had significant power and influence. One of the more interesting things about this election cycle here in the U.S. is the degree to which they will continue to wield meaningful power and influence, if at all. The movement is breaking up internally with generational changes and -- a very healthy sign -- lots of disgust vis-a-vis the misdeeds of the old leaders. Interesting.

  • Fantastic vid, prof!

"Destroy marriage"? Damn, that guy is creepy.

  • Thanks, Sweetkittenpie.

It's fascinating, disgusting, and intellectually vile how Dr. Kennedy and so many like him take the words of a very small number of gay and lesbian extremists on something like "destroy[ing] marriage" and, via their own special brand of alchemy, turn those marginal sentiments into the beliefs of every homosexual seeking and fighting for the legal right to civil marriage.

  • Prof, I have no idea how you can stomach reading a book like Kennedy's. You are a braver man than I. Anyway, excellent and well done rebuttal. Seeing well researched videos from you are always a pleasure!

  • who was the hot pointer guy? ;-)

  • Oh Prof — as always — a masterclass in the skilful and humane dissection of the issues. As you've pointed out and substantiated, you've actually been generous to this rampant false-witness-bearer.

  • Grazie mille, Theramin. :-)

  • ["What was Evolution really all about? Science? Evidence? No. Sex." pp. 28]

    Wow. Can you say, "projection?"

  • "Wow. Can you say, 'projection?'"

Right! In the catalogue of strange religious claims about science, *that* has to be among the strangest.

  • You sound a bit hoarse, Prof, but the presentation was as great as ever. Couldn't agree more regarding the "mainstream" mystics actually being more dangerous than the Westboro loons. I think the only difference between your average fundy and Phelps is that Phelps has the guts to say what he really thinks and act on it to an extent eschewed by most.

  • "You sound a bit hoarse, Prof...."

A generous description, LibertyIsNotGiven. lol But earlier in the week my voice sounded something like a bus engine, so progress has been made.

"Couldn't agree more regarding the 'mainstream' mystics actually being more dangerous than the Westboro loons."

Exactly. Any crackpot can crudely insult people, as Phelps does. But we must be concerned about those who wield actual influence in corridors of power -- people who are often not well known.

  • The clip of that bastard preaching his shit made me want to punch something. Awesome video, Prof. Nothing but clear and presentable logic. Religion is opposed to human rights, and that is why I oppose religion. I may not be very charismatic, but I think I can still find a way to tell those self-righteous bastards where to shove it.

  • Thanks very much, PhasedPrism. In that bit of his preaching that I showed, one sees how purely bigoted and extremist notions can be made to *seem* less threatening when it's dressed up in a doctoral robe and the delivered by an avuncular minister. The appearance, however, is entirely deceptive. People like D. James Kennedy are far more dangerous than any Fred Phelps.

  • What really burns me up is, this pea-headed imbecile of a preacher is standing up there with the support of US taxes and spewing out vile hatred while promoting anti-constitutional ideas about 'reuniting' church and state. These fascist bastards should be treading on thin ice and counting their blessings that there isn't a big movement ready to pull the plug on their disgustingly unconstitutional tax exemptions!

  • But instead they use their tax-exempt pulpits to stick their filthy noses up everyone's ass. I swear, when the anti-church movement rolls through town some day, I'm going to jump on that train and put everything I have behind the complete and final destruction of God's hateful community. I pray to Zeus that this day draws near in my lifetime.

  • I share your concern about the tax-exempt status of these operations. People like Kennedy have basically been running branch offices of the Republican National Committee for years under the cloak of religion and the exemptions it enjoys in the United States. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, to be sure. However, the taxpayers don't have to pay the tab for its expression.

  • Great job Prof.

It's sad that people can't see the fine line between disgust and hatred. I am glad that most Christians do not display either as overtly as the Kennedy's and Robertson's of the world. Too bad both are in such positions of influence.

As a straight male, I don't get it. Why isn't Phelps outside Red Lobster with a sign that reads "Christ Hates Crabs!" Both 'sins' are found in Leviticus..

Oh, right. Jesus' crew never mentioned shellfish. God's perfect standard in action.

  • Thanks, Rational. I'd like to see a fiery sermon on the wearing of garments made of two fabrics (Lev 19:19) and/or why little people and the testicularly challenged are permitted in the nation's churches (Lev 21:18-20).

In any case, how about those declarations about evolution from the late Dr. Kennedy? Wild stuff, eh?

  • // In any case, how about those declarations about evolution from the late Dr. Kennedy? Wild stuff, eh? //

    But it's true, Prof.

I am currently entertaining the notion of knocking over a convenience store simply because I understand endogenous retroviral placement within the human and great ape genomes. After that, I think I'll eradicate the Jewish nation.

    You in? : )

  • Well, let's start with the sign-making. ;-)

  • You know, it comes down to two options. Either these religious people are crazy/insane/deluded OR they are liars. We turn them into liars when we teach them how the universe actually works. Hopefully they then recognize that and drop the lie by stopping their primitive beliefs. But in my experience, they turn into full blown liars ... and we can see them acting dishonestly from then on. They have no morals!

  • Farvision, there is the third possibility, which I didn't address in this video, i.e., that they are bullshitters. I've covered that in a number of other videos. My sense is that in the leadership of the Christian Right Wing one will find lots of liars, more than a few crazy people, and a bunch of bullshitters. The liars seems to have their hands on the controls though.

  • Well done!

  • I just love how he begins with a quote telling us unbelievers that were "evil" then says we should show the respect he does to us.

  • If I can put my English teacher hat on... I wouldn't say that labelling someone something and name-calling is the same thing. If you'd called him a crazy motherfucker, that'd be name calling. As it is, you're just making an observation. Name-calling isn't an observation, as it implies a level of contempt. You can say Kennedy was crazy without showing any actual contempt for him. Like saying the sun is hot isn't a slur on it's name. Anyway. Kennedy WAS a crazy motherfucker. What a Froot Loop!

  • (Damn, I miscounted—guess it was four parts, not three.)

Part 4. I wouldn't be surprised if there are others like me--people who examined and eventually abandoned their theistic worldview as a direct result of Kennedy's ministry. Perhaps Kennedy's influence does have its upside. :)

  • Vulpix, thanks for your comments; well-spoken and reasonable. Lately I find myself wondering about a 'house of cards' theology. While my loss of faith had nothing to do with evolution but with God's character seeming just a 'bit' too Jewish (i.e. man-made) the principle is the same.

I read a review by Daniel Wallace on Ehrman' work where he made this same observation. But there's an entire DECK of cards I'd have to deal with until I could re-enter the arena of faith.

    Kinda sucks. : )

  • Part 3 of 3: At the time I read this, I wanted to believe in God, but I was also fully aware of the veracity of the theory of evolution. Kennedy's statements forced me to reevaluate my worldview--it didn't seem reasonable anymore to share a belief in both God and evolution. After a great deal of study, I finally resolved my cognitive dissonance; I became an atheist.

  • good for you

  • Part 2 of 3: In the chapter entitled "Why I Believe in Creation," Kennedy details the incompatibility of Christianity and evolution, arguing that evolution "would have used billions of years and billions of trillions of quadrillions of creatures living and bleeding and dying in order that man might finally appear," a process "totally out of sync with any Christian view of God."

  • Part 1 of 3: A couple of years ago, I listened to well over a hundred of Kennedy's sermons, downloaded from the Coral Ridge Ministries website. I was interested enough to purchase one of his books: Why I Believe.

  • Once again, good points...

... Fred Phelps is the kinda person I look at, directly after Jason Voorhees and Freddy Krueger, and ask myself "which would I prefer God sending after me?"

Honestly, I'd have to pick Jason. At least he guarantees quick and utter death.
