Jonathan is the kind of strange that you usually get only with obscure rural blues artists. Peg Leg Howell, Barbecue Bob, even Big Mama Thornton - you can hear them all behind this music.
stop n shop is a grocery store chain in Massachusetts, with a few in Connecticut, New York, and other places. It's not a roadside store. Just for context.
If I saw Jonathan Richman play Roadrunner live I would NOT just stand there. Maybe the crowd was full of surviving members of the NY Dolls and they were too old to move.
Man, I used to work right around the corner at St. Marks BookShop in the 90s and ALL these cool dudes would come in-- Lou Reed, Joey Ramone, Allen Ginsberg, Willem Dafoe, John Waters, Beck, Rollins, Rik Ocasek, Greg Corso, etc. etc. etc. the list goes on and on and on. Last year i went down to the ol' stomping grounds and was a bit depressed on what I saw. Guess I'm just gettin' old.
No, it actually is depressing now. I used to go to the Continental and GBGB's back around 93. Now, there are hardly any rock clubs in that area. It is chain stores and yuppie stuff.
Its funny, Jonathan Richman is almost totally unknown here in Spain, but he won a Radio Show Award, the "Throw up" awards, showing the crappiest singers and songs.
Surprisingly, he became a well respected singer here, because his songs wasnt that "bad" at all, in fact, people really liked the songs, but its some weird things in them that made it funny.
This is a blistering version even though it's meant to be fun for a birthday bash. Dang that's some wild guitar in there. CONGRATULATIONS, btw: Today this video was selected by the NYC Punk Rock Evolution Foundation. A true pioneer and innovator in art/comedy/soft punk.
for some reason the term "soft punk" is hideous to me. This is the first time i've heard it and was instantly repulsed. The original version of roadrunner wasn't any softer than any ramones song. I think he was erroneously put into the punk genre, but he was just doing his music. And I'm not the biggest fan ever but roadrunner is the only punk sounding song I know of his.
Back in the 1960's AM radio was king, it was where you went to hear pop and rock. FM radio was not widely used and didn't become the home of rock radio until some time in the 70's.
hey, SEAN100MAIN: ummmm am I missing something here? I think you accidentally replied to my comment.... Because not only am I already aware of everything you said, but it had nothing to do with the comment I wrote. Thanks for the info though....
Hey, SEAN100MAIN: oh, shit... nevermind. I read my other comment. Okay, so I get that AM was AOR and the underground music place to be.... But I didn't really make the connection I guess. Okay, thanks a lot.
Thank you SO MUCH for posting this!!!!
