Mahler LOVED "The Dance of the Seven veils" when Strauss played it for him on the piano. One of my top 5 favorite operas. Such a masterpiece. You can smell the sex and the rotting head and everything. It's all there in the music.

Salome made me like opera. this is a great performance by the orchestra. and best dance i've seen so far on youtube. if someone knows better, please point me to it!
also is there clip from this performance of the last 5 minutes or so?
Of the three Salomes I've seen who get their kit off (so to speak), all are different, all are good in their own ways. Maria Ewing played her as a screwed-up good girl who was determined to be sexy and who got in way over her head; Karita Mattila was a junkie princess who was out of control; Catherine Malfitano I can only describe as "Sacred Temple Hooker". Very strange, very courageous and seriously primal.
Maybe she´s not a gorgeous woman, but her technique, the way she moves her hands it is dazzling. I love her performance. I have watched it hunded of times.
No man is ever going to give any head to a woman who is jumping up and down legs wide apart like a rabbit on crack. On the contrary, seeing teeth such as hers, any normal man feels an instant need to make sure his zipper is properly closed.
Not very erotic, nor subtle and it's unclear who she is dancing to. To the crowd? Her mouvements are too brisk, energetic and somehow masculine and she spends too much time legs wide apart which is quite the antithesis of sensual female eroticism. In a more subtle dance the transparent body stocking might be effective. Her teeth look a bit scary and too ready to bite so to speak.
Who cares about female sensual eroticism? It gets a little boring without some variety. The dance obviously mimics the poses on Egyptian and Grecian vases, as well as the experimental posing of the 1920s. Good enough for me, it's much harder to remember a contemporary piece than look conventionally sexy.
If you don't know who she's dancing to, then you don't know the opera well. Besides, the director of this performance had his ideas about how to stage the dance and if there's a momentary lack of clarity somewhere, it's due to the direction and not to Malfitano's stellar performance.
She might have made her MET debut like that, but she was a fixture of NYCO for years before that. She can be seen in telecasts of Saint of Bleeker street in 78-79 and before that she sang Susanna (with Ramey as Figaro) and other roles like that at the City opera.
Bravo. Teresa Stratas does a better job though. I liked the singing and acting in the bryn terfel version was good but I hated the production and the way the dance was preformed.
Great performance, but I, personally, prefer the Maria Ewing's account... It's more natural, contemporanean... Good performance by the orchestra. Thanks for Upload. It's really, Catherine Milfitano isn't a dancer, is only a great singer, amazing soprano.
I remember seeing this as a young Opera student in college. I rented it from the media library after having heard about it and I was BLOWN AWAY. I have heard tales that she was one of the few to actually be nude in this scene. WHAT A LEGEND! IMO shes one of the most captivating Opera diva's ever to grace the stage! A definite highlight in Opera's history.
Well, please don't forget, Miss Malfitano is a SINGER, not a dancer. She should get mad props for even attempting the choreography in the middle of a demanding soprano role.
Obviously, she studied dance. Obviously, she takes care of herself. Obviously, she can sing the role. What else do you want?

Pior do que a cena é a coreografia da dança contemporanea.
Ñ to dizendo que ela ñ esta fazendo bem ou que ñ esta dando seu melhor, mas nunca existiu uma Salomé definitiva.

Also, what kind of idiot would flag the Berlin production of Strauß's Salomé as inappropriate? Jeez...

Your remark is completely beyond the pale. Obviously, you know next to nothing about how this character and this opera should be presented.

Je conçois une difficile réalisation, mais l'interprétation est belle.
La gestuelle parfois brusque et énergique dénote une parfaite maitrise du rythme imposé par la musique.
Une belle musique, une belle danse, quel enchantement.
