  • Liking the tunage gez!!sounds like early digweed/bedrock!!The Akai S1000/1100 series go have that lovely sound!!The earlier models have that olk skool grit that no VST/soundcard can replicate!!(though i hear things are getting closer techwise, i still notice the difference as do many other producers). The s900 series kick ass too(really gritty 12 bit punch!!)as do the 3000/3200 and later models(esp like the 3000xl for uk hard house)though the s1000/1100 series are my faves!Keep em coming dude! (:

  • What the model of the spectrum analizer I see at 00:28 on your mixing desk?

    Thanks.

  • @drbenway It's a audioscope. 31 band unit.

  • alright Cymbermax just 2 more questions heh. Got the S1100 up and running and everything works after going through the manual but, for some reason I cant get s1100 to format any of the floppy disks I have (MF2HD or 2HD). It just says "disk unreadable! Bad directory area!". I also know this isnt the most effective way to store samples so I was wondering if you would recommend finding an SCSI harddrive or an IOMEGA zip drive? Thanks a lot for your help

  • can the s1100 do something the s5000 cant do?

  • @thunderheart530

Yes! It can SOUND BETTER..... Like a Fairlight.

  • @karelpostthuis

So if sound quality was the highest priority, what would be the best choice out of the akai s series? In your opinion of course

  • @thunderheart530

The S1100 is the very best sounding and the 5000 / 6000 series are very practical and sound very clean and compact.

S3000 is okay, but suffers from the company's need to cut costs due to competition.

S1000 is pure rock and roll, as is the 900 / 950, completely cult for classic house sounds.

S1100 is a choice for lifetime use and the best sound ever from Akai.

  • @karelpostthuis Hey i actually just picked up a fully upgraded s1100 for 60$. i can get it to make a sound but the screen does absolutely nothing when i adjust the display contrast. it does get a super dim light in the background but thats it. would that just be the backlight replacement?

  • @thunderheart530 Powersupply soldering probably.

    These machines don't die.

Get a qualified person that knows about soldering in power supplies if you can't yourself.

Don't wreck the thing... because it's from a golden era....

  • @thunderheart530 Your floppydrive suffers from the symptom we all know, and hate..

    It's dead.

Go for a SCSI harddrive (AN OLD ONE! e.g. Seagate or the indestructable PRODRIVES from Quantum...) not too big, let's say max 1 Gb as the S series have a pretty outdated SCSI protocol.

The S1100 uses small partitions of 60MB each, so make a logbook where you note in which partition you put your actual banks.

    Good luck!

I use a ZIP to backup, and a harddrive for normal operations.

  • @karelpostthuis, what a nice room full of gear you got there. Good work and I agree with you. Fruity loops sucks, anyone can use it and sounds like shit. I use the roland mc 909, mc 808, elektron machinedrum and monomachine, korg elektribe (the red and the blue) and some keyboards, a nord lead, kp3 and radias. I haven´t uploaded music videos, but I will in the next months.

    Cheers !!!

  • Thats WHY its called fruity loops-because it SOUNDS FRUITY!! It is like comparing a Lamborghini to a Ford. Any punk ass computer geek can download software, use his fingers to program so called "beats" and jerk off at the same time, while a real MUSICIAN can play top of the line instruments and make a production. This one sounds real nice and I see you got the Akai S1100, along with some real nice gear!! Maybe you can fix my S1100??!!!

  • What's wrong with your AKAI?

Powersupply: Take apart the supply and resolder the entire board and it's sub-board.That will wake the bastard up!

Floppy: Replace the CRAP TEAC with a S1000 spare ALPS, will last you a lifetime.

Display: Replace the FL with one from MIDI-RAKETE or CONRAD.

S1100's are built to last, i've got spareparts for S1100's and S1000's.

The S1100, the soundquality is equal to the Fairlight 3.

No PC card under $1000 comes close.

S1100 is pure Rock And Roll!!

  • @intromix

You are aware that secret cinema only uses fruity?

  • Oh? are you serious?............

I've got a studio, you've got a computer, so does my mom.

  • I know first hand the difference between fruity / softsynths and hardware.

Does fruity loops give me the special sound of e.g. the Emulator 2?

Or give me the same sound as my Jupiter 8? Answer is NO!

Vintage gear differs me from "in the box" mixes.

I didn't call for your "know it better" remark so you get the same type reply, sorry.

I DON'T want a hardware / software discussion here, because that is not what it's all about!

I Choose hardware because that is my CREATIVE choice.

  • Goddamn those gears! And sorry but i couldn't resist to add .. Sofwares & softsynths are for the weak wannabes .. i rest my case. I'm trying my best not let my gear touches computer. Thanks. :-)

  • @whisperingvenus I have owned an Akai AX-80, Roland SH-201, Korg X-50, Korg Wavestation EX, Roland D110, Alesis SR16, Roland TR-505 and I have created

sounds using VSTi that I don't think I could ever emulate with any of my hardware synths. I'm sorry, but VSTi has open doors for far more creativity, than any hardware synth.

  • @MrSYSTEM20

The gearlist you mention doesn't sound creative to me too, exept the AX80 those synths you had sound thin and poor, of course you are better off with VST's.

But when it comes to Prophet 5's and minimoog where all parameters are just as controllable as your VST version, i think for my studio i won't make that same choice.

  • @whisperingvenus True. I switched to software like a lot of musicians for a home studio just because of the floor space requirements. If you're using legal software, the cash isn't as much as an issue as hardware synth modules are usually cheap S/H.

However I have found that practically all VSTis either sound like a DX7, a Korg M1 or something in between, whatever synthesis method they promise. It's particularly noticeable at the bottom end of the keyboard, which is where true analog shines.

  • @stellarartwars07 That is correct and so true because of the sample rate problems.

Even the first computer instruments like the Fairlight and especially the Synclavier had workarounds for that problem, like the increase in sample rate in the synclavier at a whopping 200Khz in some systems.

The Fairlight 3 sampled and synthesized at 100Khz and had analogue filtering and level control.

  • @karelpostthuis but what if i want all the hardware... but cant afford a couple g's. then can i use fruity loops and still be cool? :)

  • @thunderheart530

I am NOT suggesting you cannot make good music with software, it is just the creative choice of the musician depending on workflow, sound and finance.

My choice is hardware, because that is how i want to work and sound.

PLUS the fact that hardware is an investment that, when you take care of it, doesn't lose value at all, AND you don't need updates or new versions every time the OS and softsynth manufacturers think you need to give them more money to keep the pc running.

  • @parablepoetry

That's why todays music sounds like crap.

The younger generation who now compose and produce music don't know the old equipment and how much better it sounds.
