WOW, this is tennis at its finest, right now you have Federer, Nadal, Djokovic and that's pretty much it. The first week in every Slam is super boring as you know all the top seeds will come through. Tennis in the late 80's/early 90's was 10 times better than it is now.
This was the best of what tennis has had offered upto this day. Maybe it was coincidence. But at this time (early 90s) older generation was still able to play at a competitive level and young generations peaked out quite early - many of them already had GS titles in their teens. This was only possible way to have champions of pastm present and future to compete in the same tourney - this naturally brought versatile game plays. This scene will never be seen again during today, Shame..
Today all the players play the same way on hard court, clay, indoor and grass. It's quite boring. Anyway it's really a pleasure to see players like becker, lendl, krajicek, edberg ...it was great tennis, "pure talent". And you"re right probably the best of history.
SEEBAASTIIAN wtf are you talking about?..........I understand that this was the golden age of tennis with the old guard and the new rising stars..........but you cant say the current generation has not talent........especially the womens side.........Venus W has been unstoppable on grass these past few years...Serena and Maria S have been tearing up the other surfaces....and lets not forget Justine Henin on Clay , Elena just won the gold .........and how about the mens side..I mean cmon now.
justine is retired, sharapova is basically done with her injuries, venus is only good on grass, elena still chokes at the majors and serena barely shows up to play. the women's game is pure shit. #1 college man in the world could beat any woman on tour
omg i think i am in tennis heaven sampras, agassi, courier, chang, edberg, becker, lendl, mcenroe, connors i dont think the us open was this competitive ever
this was the golden age of tennis world with players like Agassi, Lendl, Courier, Sampras, McEnroe, Edberg, Wilander, Chang, Becker. And on the side of women with Steffi Graf, Gaby Sabatini, Seles, Sanchez. Vicario and Novotna.
In the current tennis all through high hit the ball and the talent is disappearing :S
Mcenroe fought hard but it was sadly one sided. The biggest difference (which is often the key in men's tennis of course) was that Mcenroe did not serve well and Courier served unbelievably! Courier's first serve percentage through the first 2 sets was in the 70's if I recall! So he cruised through his serve games and got to really pressure Mac in all his serve games. It wasn't until the 3rd set when Mcenroe started holding serve (even then it was a struggle as Courier was very confident by then
They asked Courier after if Mcenroe's style was obsolete, and Courier said it was "tough to say". He did remember that when he was first on tour, Mcenroe had given him a really bad beating!
