New Zealand Charities benefit from TechSoup NZ & Microsoft NZ

The value is calculated at the fair market value it would otherwise cost to buy. Those featured in the video make it clear that the donated software they received through TechSoup NZ has made a significant difference. Open source has a place too, but many charities do not have the resources or capacity to use it. We are proud to be associated with Techsoup NZ and know that it is making a real difference for community organisations.

It's also worth asking Microsoft: how did they calculate the value of their massive $1.4million donation? Or how much it is actually *costing* them? Given their 90%+ monopoly profit margins, I'm guessing no more than $140,000. Not nearly as generous as it sounds... Of course, that doesn't even take the proprietary lock-in and further sales to "friends and family" of full-priced licenses.... Of course, free/open source software does *everything* that Microsoft promises and more... for $0.

Unfortunately, I think that Microsoft is patting themselves on the back way too hard for this one. Getting charities hooked on MS's brand of proprietary software benefits no one more than Microsoft. Plus, their "generous donation" is most likely making them a profit in tax benefits.
