Every time I watch Amadeus, and especially this scene, I get goosebumps all over! The pain that Mozart is in, the intense and deep emotions that are present in "Don Giovanni", the excellent performance of the singers, and F. Murray Abraham as Saliere narrating it all....as Salieri says "terrifying and wonderful to watch". I could never get enough of Amadeus, my favourite film!
Parlo ascolta! Più tempo non ho! MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!!!!
To be entirely honest, I can't see why this has only 55,000 views?? this is the best version of the 'Commendatore Scene' even with Salieri talking over half of it, I would listen to this version and no other! I have the whole opera on dvd, but still as great as the whole piece is, this has to be the greatest version of this masterpiece! Amazing music, brilliant film and genius Mozart! <3
The opera is actually not THAT "dark"... Mozart himself categorized it as a comic opera. The only grim parts are in the beginning and end. It's a really fun opera and I consider it his best work.
I always think that the curtain should have gone down there. I don;t think that it ever needed all the other princials blundering in do deliver some vague moral message.
they should reprise this production live today, none of this bullcrap modernised/casual versions. seeing the flames and the full armored commendatore and that flying dude at the end... it's so different
One of the best scenes in the movie. To me, it is the scene, that impressed and influenced me most. These feelings never came to me when I saw some modern versions of "Don Giovanni".
The audience are unreceptive because a) Mozart was way ahead of his time musically and socially, b) Giovanni refuses to repent and so offends the morality of the church (suicidal in those days) and c) because a lot of the audience were suppressing guilt because they privately acted like Giovanni.
great god! Can't stand this "huh? i thought the crowd bla bla bla" stuff anymore! stop giving a shit about whats true or not! just watch the movie und listen to the music and u don't need that history shit anymore! the most of the plot is not true! or do you think salieri really tried to kill mozart?
@elias12186 It's all bollocks considering that Don Giovanni was premiered in Prague, once Mozart edited the Opera for Vienna it then became popular and was performed more than 5 times.
@achan1058 The reason its so soft is because this was not something they were expecting from someone who had single-handedly grown up playing for royalty and selling out concerts on a nightly basis. Think of it this way, if you had a favorite band and they took a completely different route from what they normally do. Not a lot of people would be happy to hear it.
At this time especially, the Viennese, like the French, wanted their operas light and frothy (and in France, with a ballet thrown in, needed or not...) - the darkness of this would not have gone over well in that climate.
@bordshat I started this movie early in the morning, as the salieri tells the story daylight breaks in the movie and it ended as day broke in real time lol. A looooooong awesome movie.
Have you ever tougt about this? There are candles everywhere. And people running around with turches and fireworks exploding on stage. It's a miracle that operahouse didn't burn down.
It doesn't get more powerful than this....is it weird that the other night I got in the mood to watch this scene so I popped in the DVD, turned the surround sound on full blast and watched it googly eyed...I've seen it a million times and yet it doesn't have a diminishing impact with each viewing, it only gets better
I saw Don Giovanni live at the Dorothy Chandler Paviilion 7 years ago....this is still the best production I've ever seen
where can i find the clips that has salieri agonizing over his inability to compose, while god gave him the desire to? ive been looking for this for awhile and cant seem to find it!
I actually just found the part where he burns the cross - took me awhile. but having that second clip where he talks about having been given the desire... cant find that!
the clip where he burns the cross was hard for me to find, but ive added it to my favorite in case your curious.
@elias12186 You haven't missed a lot I'd say. I bought it by accident and was rather delused. The film lost some of its compatness, and some scenes are really blatant, weakening the film. I'd change my director's cut DVD against an original version DVD any time.
The person who disliked this got damned to hell by a ghostly statue.

Wow...that was, without a doubt, the most badass opera I've ever seen! I'd pay good money to see a production like this!

@1337ASM the exaggerated sound of commendatore's cape whipping around is pretty bad ass too hah.

This is why I mostly hate "modernized" production of this opera. THIS version showed "live" should be very impressive!

Don Giovanni is my favourite opera by Mozart.

The tragedy on Mozart's part in this film is that, despite his brilliance, he is only recognized by his hateful colleague, Salieri.

Oh wait there's the scene with Die Enfuhrung where Salieri finds out "the creature had my darling girl"
Ohh and the scene where old Salieri tells the guy his plan to commission the requiem and kill Mozart
Oh and how can we forget the scene where Mozart dictates to Salieri the confutatis?
The whole movie is great ;) Very few dull moments.
