It was during Malaccan era that being muslim automatically makes you a Malay by Malaccan law. Whole semenanjung was under Malaka's sphere of influence, and so the people there who embrace Islam counted as Malays regardless of their origin (the same law now preserved by UMNO govt. in modern Malaysia). Whole peninsula being Malaynized and got new name as Tanah Melayu.

The lineage of Melaka Sultans are Indians, not Malays. It is no secret that Parameswara was an Indian and a Hindu prince. It is clear from records that Parameswara never converted to Islam. He was an Indian Hindu who fled Palembang in Sumatra to eventually found Melaka circa 1400 AD. It was Sri Maharaja who converted himself and the court of Melaka to Islam, and as a result took on the name of Sultan Muhammad Shah sometime after 1435.

Hope you not stop the story at 1511 because in 1641 the Portuquese was defeated in a war with Johore and Dutch. Johore is a successor of Malacca and had made a treaty with the Dutch to fight Portuguese together and in turn, Johore will not attact Malacca and Dutch will not bother their thriving port. In a way, the colonialist had been defeated and Johor survived for few hundred years untill the end of 19th century when the British came. Otherwise, the story will not complete.
