dude, you might want to check the fuel filter. If you have to keep pumping like that and it tries to start, you might have a fuel restriction problem.

Jeremy I think I know whats going on here, if you press down the gas pedal to the floor, the choke plate is suppose to close? Also I am curious pour a little gas down the carb and see if it sputters or fires momentarly. You could also have a plugged fuel filter or bad fuel pump as well.
