Some of his sayings have stayed with me for years. Yet I am no closer to understanding or benefiting from them. Perhaps 2012 will be the year they reveal their secrets... :)
Along with The Art of War and The Prince, this is one of my favorite books. The maxim I apply most in this day and age when anyone can say anything against you on the net is Maxim 279.
"Do not respond to those who contradict you. You have to distinguish whether the contradiction comes from cunning or vulgarity. It is not always obstinacy, but may be artfulness. Notice this, for in the first case one may get into difficulties, in the other into danger......"
That's the main issue with the "wise" in my generation. Procrastination. It's a strong part of my own psychological conditioning and I don't think it's a hurdle which is easily overcome.
Not in a timely manner anyway...
MO BOOKS! All of these belong on a reading list for intellectual enlightenment.
I like these kinds of books which share short sayings derived from people's life experiences. I'm curious, Corey....If you, yourself were to compile a book of your own such Maxims, what might be one that you would include?

The spelling is "Baltasar Gracián", no "h" after the "t" I believe.
