He started with a photo (raster image) put it on a layer in Illustrator, then traced each component, to build up the final drawing, then used another program (probably Flash) to create the video. No big deal. I did a drawing of this type using CorelDraw v.5 like 10 years ago.

This is a vector graphics, it is done in Illustrator using the great Gradient Mesh tool. It is not done in Photoshop nor any 3D software.

This was made in illustrator cs3, probably using the "mesh tool" mixed with "gradient". for sure it was made using a good photography as base. The lines coming up from above are a section of the option "outline", that shows the base lines only. pretty nice work!!

For a start, this is illustrator not Photoshop. It's easier than you think with all the new things added like the mesh gradient tools n such. Even I remade a H3 in a day it's that easy. =]

An alternative can be 3D rendered to Vectors with saving the history of drawing or Save to Layer option.

If it were a drawing, nobody'd draw it that systematically... ALL of the outlines rise from the bottom up, and all of the colors fill from right to left... You'd need to be hella precise to be able to do that, especially without zooming.

In my opinion it's a render of a photo realistic 3D model.

This is not done in illustrator. Surely it looks like it but the images are being pasted or imported from somewhere else. or maybe not even that. Take look at the tool palette. I has the selection tool selected the whole time. now if he was drawing this in illustrator he would have had to use the pen tool and the gradient mesh tool. and others
