actually picking over the fretboard away from the pickups like he did is an oldschool jazz trick it gives more on an upright bass sound and smooths out and rounds out note..but it is predominantly used in jazz
so when you flick the coil tap switch in the beginning, you have the blend knob all the way up to the neck pickup which is unaffected by the switch...
