  • Is defraging an SSD bad for it?

  • @NostalgicLink Yes you will shorten its lifespan

  • @lzxc10 Thanks for the tip ;-)

I read someone else's comment below and saw something about TRIM is the way to properly remove files from an SSD, what's that all about? Should I TRIM up the SSD everytime I uninstall something?

  • DEFRAGGLER SON!

  • check out game booster it does all kinds of things to your computer so it runs faster

  • What is the best De-frag program out there today. I am currently using Smart De-frag 2.

  • Does ssd needs maintaining like hdd?

    Hdd=defraging

    Ssd=???

  • @MW2mostwanted Depends. Short answer: Yes, SSD's require something called 'TRIM' for short. When deleting something on a SSD, cells inside the disk will be used-up, and the disk will eventually act slow and 'used'. You might want to look 'TRIM' up.

If you are referring to defragmentation, then NO. SSD's should NOT be defragmented. It won't like "blow the disk up", but SSD's don't become 'fragged' in the first place. So defragging a SSD is totally unesessary, it only tears on the disk itself.

  • thanks for the help

  • I haven't defragmented my computer in like 8 months. I'm running it now but it's taking a veryyy long time it's been 14 hours now... Do you thnk it's because I hadn't defragmented it in such a Lon time? And will his greatly improve it's performance?

  • Defraggler. Love it.

  • I personally use Defraggler and for the most part, it does an excellent job.

  • i enjoy being a linux user, knowing that windows' NTFS and FAT32 are the worst modern filesystems. mac and linux have filesystems that automatically defragment, read and write faster than ntfs, and have journaling to protect your files in case of a crash

  • i use perfect disc 10

  • Do you have any experience with the Server product from O&O? I am currently using Defraggler on all company servers and it works fine but scheduling still needs to be done by Scheduled Tasks running a batch/command file.

  • HELP. my laptop said 40 % defragment (from an alaysis) then midway it changed to 55% ?! and my hard drive went from 75 gb of used space to 54 gb of used space in less than a second?!!?!?

  • I actually forgot about defragmentation, so I checked too see how bad my disk drive would be. It said 0%, which got me worried, but at the top it has the schedule: Every Wednesday at 1pm. I've had my computer for about a year and I had no idea it was doing this. Awesome.

  • once every 3 years for me LOL

    Solution:SSD

  • I use O&O Defrag too, one of the great things it can do it monitor your disks and defrag them when your PC is idle, highly recommended.

  • i love software that cost money so much :)

freeware just does not cut it for me. : (

  • lol, ive never needed this, but i had to try it since my computer uses a hellottatime to startup which it usually doesnt =o

  • i use own microsoft defrag programm i recommend it.

  • Puran Defrag is free and better than the paid alternatives, check it out!

  • For O & O Defrag 12 Professionel check out my Channel and Watch my auotplaying Giveaway :D

  • There is only ONE person that knows more about computers... and that is Chuck Noris! Another great vid! 100% behind you with turning off comments!

  • I use Defraggler.

  • THANK YOU for giving the 10-15% Guideline!

I've seen a billion vids about defraging but none of them gave me a "Rule Of Thumb" as to how much fragmentation was too much I was looking for this infoSince i've heard that excessive Defraging can in fact be harmful to the drive.

thanks again for the guideline !

  • Auslogics Disk Defrag, great company, great product, and a thousand times faster than Windows' built in.

  • Why are people dling software to defrag? Is the Defragmenter on our C: not all it could be?

  • auslogics tools !

  • Is Defragler good? It ios from piriform (same producers of CCLeaner)

  • I don't defrag.

  • is the one that your using free or trial too?

  • i use tune up ultities 09

    the best

  • thank you for explaining what is defragmentation means

  • Smart Defrag from IObit is the best.

  • I say Diskeeper is the best.

"Diskeeper EnterpriseServer" has something called "IntelliWrite" that prevents defragmentation before it occurs, and some other features too.

    MyDefrag is good too.

  • never done a defrag had my pc for only 6 months now

  • I use Piriform Defragger. I like it :)

  • I use a great defrag program -- Diskeeper 2008

It can silent defrag while you're idling, and monitor your PF fragmentation.

Did you know that the Windows Defrag program is a LITE, extremely stripped-down version of Diskeeper?

  • Is it OK to defrag several times a day?

  • Why would you. It doesnt have any effect.

You should do it like once a month... thats when it has the most effect.

  • Didn't get the joke did you.

  • Was it a joke..

    In that case... not funny

  • ahaha not for me. sometimes when I have to do mass downloads to give to friends, my files get so fragmented I'd have to defrag twice a day.

So a rule of thumb is that the more stuff you put into your hard drive, the more often you will have to defragment the drive.

  • @unstable112 will it save from viruses and increase performance

  • @unstable112 It only has the most effect because you notice the speed boost from it because the computer was slowed down from the defragmentation. If you do it once a day or once a week it will never get fragmented so it will never slow down.

  • yes but why would you need to?

  • if you do it everyday then it never builds up so it should only take a few seconds instead of like an hour once a week

  • Question:

Ok so i just defraged my hard drive a minuit ago. that results after it is that my hard drive space went down from about 20 GB to about 16 GB.

i have no clue what thats about.

i did a disk check before it.

what happened, and what should i do?

  • i never knew u had to defrag ever other month. i chcked and it wouldnt let me defrag. i dont have enough space. i thought i had like 20gbs left but i only have 5 gbs left. i have a 40gb hardrive. PLS HELP how can ifree that space to defrag????? and is it safe to defrag without 15% of free data???

  • uninstall unused programs and i would think about getting a new hard drive with over 160GB.

  • I prefer JKdefrag or Defraggler, google them if you want to download.

  • And UltraDefrag is a good freeware tool, it even lets you defragment boot files :)

  • hey i just want to know is defraging your hard disc helps you get rid of files that are useless and no use at all? pls help me

  • no it does not, what you need is a disk cleaner. im not sure where it is in vista, but in xp is its in

    start->all programs->accessories->system tools->disk cleaner.

  • What's wrong with the Windows' defragmenter?

  • ur always soo helpful :) ty !

  • Hello, do i have to do anything before i defrag? I have had my pc since november and i think it is due for a clean up. Can I just press defrag and then leave it to do it's thing? Will i lose anything? its my 1st attempt at 1!! Thanks

  • does defragmentation brick ur pc

  • i cant see my defrag disk volume ( hard drive ) can you help me

  • do you know how you can see that??

  • well i know if i go to administrative Tools > Computer management > Disk management i could see them over there but

if i go to start ...System Tools click in Disk Defragmenter

it doesnt show me any volume or capacity

any sugestion how to fix that?????

i tried to reinstall defrag and even run Chkdsk.exe to see any errors but still the same...

  • try right clicking and click un as administrater. see if that helps

  • PerfectDisk 2008 rocks! I have an older computer and noticed a performance gain immediately.... and it's very easy to use.

  • perfectdisk FTW

  • Im a huge fan of the online and free programmer, Defraggler.

It was reviews in Maximum PC awhile back, and works great.

  • diskeeper is better than o&o.......

  • I use Perfect Disk, I like it more than O&O because its ieaser to use. And i can truelly notice the preformance gain!

  • dude ty good vid about defragmentor!

  • A couple extra tips:

Fragmentation is affected by your usage. If you download and install lots of stuff, and also delete stuff from time to time (such as after watching/burning TV/DVD rips), your need to defragment will be much greater than someone who uses their PC just to check email and Youtube. Two extremes, granted.

If you have a seperate partition for your downloads, you will greatly cut down the rate at which the system partition gets fragmented (because downloads aren't interfering).

  • I use JKDefrag. Free, fast, and thourogh. It's also portable.

Here's a review site that compares nearly all of the defragging programs. Google this: "The Great Defrag Shootout VIII". Very thorough and comprehensive.

  • if i were to be doing a disk defrag and it was taking a long time and i wanted to play a game like wow, could i stop the defrag and then resume it later, at the same spot or would i have to start all over?

  • Of course you can. That said, any new fragmentation that crops up will have to be dealt with too.

  • lol on the safe side, I defrag everyday xD

  • I disagree. I think JKdefrag does a better defrag and disk optimization.

I use jkdefrag.exe -a 7 to do a complete optimization and regular jkdefrag without option for normal use.

    It's also free.

  • Yes, how about Diskeeper.

I've been using it for a long time now and it's working well.

I use it to defragment manually every week and then also have it on automatic.

Which means it defragments in the background whenever you're not doing anything or much.

I have an old computer and it's really light on the system.

Plus it also has many more options, like schedules and boot-time defragmentation, a so-called "fragshield", etc.

  • diskeeper didnt sponsor him

  • You mean didn't sponsor Rodney so he didn't mention them?

  • Mr 3DgameMan! i need your heeeeeeelp!

ok so ... if anyone else knows... but i hope rodney will answer im thinking to flash my 8800GT's BIoS so... will a external usb 1.1 floppy disk drive work?? or do i need an interior one??? i want to do that Volt Mod for my 8800GT at my own risk for so long.. cant wait.. what should i buy?? my motherboard is a ASUS p5n-e sli :-)

    SOMEONE!

  • Diskeeper ftw. I don't remember the last time I manually defragged because it defrags as files get written to the hard disk!

  • Thank you Rodney.

I let my defrags get away and need to do something about it so i might get O&O.

    Thank again.

  • What's wrong with the windows's internal defragment program?

  • It's a crap version of diskkeeper. Try running the proper diskkeeper trial on your machine, and you'll see it's not as pristine as Windows defrag pretends. I really need to try those other programs mentioned.

  • Diskeeper is the best, you don't have to schedule anything since it continually defrags your HDD in the back ground while still using low resources.

  • YEAH

  • Hi Gameman im just wondering will the ASUS striker 2 extreme (790i) able to run 2 ATI HD4870 X2?? please leave a comment!

  • no, it's an sli board and only supports nvidia cards when using more than one. if you want 4870 x2 in crossfire, i suggest the asus rampage extreme for the best crossfire board on the market. (unless u want to get skulltrail)

  • wich i hope he doesnt want lol

  • You should do a video about overclocking because I don't know shit about it -.-

  • how about Diskeeper? Awesome app, been using it for 4 years

  • Auslogics Disk Defrag works great! The CPU settings are awesome, setting it to Highest on a quad core makes it take no time at all!

  • at 00:46 he says 'to see how much it is defragmented'

i think he means to see how much it is fragmented..

  • please look at my youtube channel at my water blood and urine rechargeable aa and aaa batteries they rock!

  • Great video Rodney, You Tube college lol learn something new everyday keep up the good work

  • Great video Rodney, keep em coming.

  • everytime i use Auglogics my comp seems to either crash soon after it has been done.. or slow down aloooooot.. :S

  • yea windows vista check the proformance and it will tell you if you need a defrang....and just like he said his favorite software can schuled defrags so can vista

In fact if you have a old computer that has vista it may try to defrag all the time which its try to help but actualy its just taking your profamance while you are trying to use you computer/

  • 0&0 Defrag is great :)

  • Thanks Rodney this help a lot!

  • I've tried O&O Defrag, I've tried PerfectDisk, but DiskDiskeeper with Automatic Defragmentation has been the best solution for me. It basically keeps your hard drive in top shape and defragments files all the time so your hard drive never gets in a bad shape.

It never slows down your computer during defragmentation because it doesn't have to work so hard like defragmenters with fixed schedules. Your hard drive is constantly being defragmented, so it's in a good shape to begin with.

  • I setup O&O Defrag to do a Complete/Access Method and Offline Defragmentation.

O&O Defrag 10 actually has a configuration wizard which allows you to defrag based upon your computer type (desktop or laptop, server or default) and activity (work/home/gaming).

  • oh rly? (work/home/GAMING) this is awesome i will buy it

  • The downside of that program is that it doesn't defragment directories or file metadata. So searching for files or scanning directories could still be relatively slow after defragmentation.

  • @3DGAMEMAN I just got O&O Defrag 12, and although I don't understand its graphics as well as the Diskeeper I'm familiar with, I see that it's doing an excellent job of monitoring my drives and "spot-defragging" as needed. Little or no drag on resources, either. Good proggie.

  • the xp defrag programm performs quite well and is enough for normal use. if youre fighting about every millisecond take one of the defrag progs rodney recommended. if you want to defrag your boot sector take bootvis from microsoft( not bootwiz which is a big compilation of spyware) i hope i could help

  • Hi Deborah,

I really appreciate your time and effort, please come by to support me too! :)

    Mary

  • What about the defragmentator thingy in windows xp? is it any good?

  • I use O&O Defrag as well, it's excellent. I can't believe how bad the Windows defrag program is considering they wrote the Operatiing System.

  • Fragmentation of the files is also one of the disadvantages of Windows. I use Linux and most Linux distributions (like Ubuntu) use Ext3 as the filesystem of choice instead of NTFS. Ext3 has a couple of advantages over NTFS. First of all it is a journaling file system so it is less likely that the it will become corrupt in the event of a crash and it is less susceptible to fragmentation with normal use. It can become fragmented of course, but that only happens with huge amounts of I/O (servers).

  • i use ultimate defrag as aswell as defragging it also puts the files onto the side of the disk where files are acessed quicker.

  • JkDefrag

  • I agree JkDefrag is amazing.

    It uses few resources.

  • i use diskeeper because windows based there owen defragmentation software on it.

  • im using perfectdisk , is this good?

  • What is the name of the free program again?

  • Diskeeper is the best.

  • Yeah, thats what Im thinking, but does anyone know for sure?

  • im really concerned for my HARD DRIVE, as its so full i have only about 200mb free on drive D: and 300mb free on C: [>same HD,2 partitions]. and so i cant defrag coz i got to have like 15% of the HD free, and i dont :\

i really dont get in what ways does O&O Defrag for example- is better than the windows one? defrag is a defrag, no?

  • The Windows defrag is a terribly crippled version of Diskkeeper. Can't help you with the O&O comparison though, haven't used it.

  • Diskeeper is good.

  • I'm sure you know alot about overclocking ram, and CPU do you reckon you could show us how to do it properly?

  • How bad is fragmentation with two hard drives in a RAID 0 configuration?

  • I use Diskeeper every day when I leave my torrents on before I go to bed, I recommend this program :D

  • I use Diskeeper to defrag

  • Do you have to defrag solid state drives?

Since there are no moving parts, you shouldnt need to, right?

  • isnt defragment corrupts some files or bad to the files?

    anyone would share?

    -someone said that to me

  • I use the defrag utility from TuneUp utilities, really cool tool, i do it once a week.

  • Auslogics best i've found, and pretty colors too! like Win XP, but even prettier =)

  • i use defraggler

  • i use windows

due to the fact that they are windows files and only windows should be doing it

y the hell would u dl and program to speed your pc up! thats putting more stuff on it?

  • putting stuff on your hard drive dosnt necesarily slow your computer down, its when the program gets loaded into memory that it slows down the machine. and most programs made by microsoft take up alot more memory than most other software companies. plus you really shouldnt be doing much else while you are defragging so it really dosnt matter how fast your computer is running at the moment of defrag.

  • Yeah I do it like once every 6 months. I thought NTFS was better at keeping unfragmented in the first place. Once a week seems overkill no?

  • What's wrong with the system defragmenter?

  • it just put files wherever it can on the hardrive, while o&o has different methods of file placement, like alphabetical order, or most accessed, or windows system files first.

  • I see...

    Thanks for the response.

  • Once a week!? jesus, i do it like once every 3 months!

  • lol, i use O&O Defrag also

  • I also use O&O Defrag. It's a great program!

I just need to experiment with which method makes my computer perform the best. I use this computer for home media, small gaming, and school-related work. Do you have a method that you would suggest Rodney?

  • use auslogic its all you will ever need.

  • That's because there's nothing Mac compatible that's even worth putting on the Mac's hardrive -_-

  • great info 5*

  • :D

    Nice.
