I read someone else's comment below and saw something about TRIM is the way to properly remove files from an SSD, what's that all about? Should I TRIM up the SSD everytime I uninstall something?
@MW2mostwanted Depends. Short answer: Yes, SSD's require something called 'TRIM' for short. When deleting something on a SSD, cells inside the disk will be used-up, and the disk will eventually act slow and 'used'. You might want to look 'TRIM' up.
If you are referring to defragmentation, then NO. SSD's should NOT be defragmented. It won't like "blow the disk up", but SSD's don't become 'fragged' in the first place. So defragging a SSD is totally unesessary, it only tears on the disk itself.
I haven't defragmented my computer in like 8 months. I'm running it now but it's taking a veryyy long time it's been 14 hours now... Do you thnk it's because I hadn't defragmented it in such a Lon time? And will his greatly improve it's performance?
i enjoy being a linux user, knowing that windows' NTFS and FAT32 are the worst modern filesystems. mac and linux have filesystems that automatically defragment, read and write faster than ntfs, and have journaling to protect your files in case of a crash
Do you have any experience with the Server product from O&O? I am currently using Defraggler on all company servers and it works fine but scheduling still needs to be done by Scheduled Tasks running a batch/command file.
HELP. my laptop said 40 % defragment (from an alaysis) then midway it changed to 55% ?! and my hard drive went from 75 gb of used space to 54 gb of used space in less than a second?!!?!?
I actually forgot about defragmentation, so I checked too see how bad my disk drive would be. It said 0%, which got me worried, but at the top it has the schedule: Every Wednesday at 1pm. I've had my computer for about a year and I had no idea it was doing this. Awesome.
I've seen a billion vids about defraging but none of them gave me a "Rule Of Thumb" as to how much fragmentation was too much I was looking for this infoSince i've heard that excessive Defraging can in fact be harmful to the drive.
@unstable112 It only has the most effect because you notice the speed boost from it because the computer was slowed down from the defragmentation. If you do it once a day or once a week it will never get fragmented so it will never slow down.
i never knew u had to defrag ever other month. i chcked and it wouldnt let me defrag. i dont have enough space. i thought i had like 20gbs left but i only have 5 gbs left. i have a 40gb hardrive. PLS HELP how can ifree that space to defrag????? and is it safe to defrag without 15% of free data???
Hello, do i have to do anything before i defrag? I have had my pc since november and i think it is due for a clean up. Can I just press defrag and then leave it to do it's thing? Will i lose anything? its my 1st attempt at 1!! Thanks
Fragmentation is affected by your usage. If you download and install lots of stuff, and also delete stuff from time to time (such as after watching/burning TV/DVD rips), your need to defragment will be much greater than someone who uses their PC just to check email and Youtube. Two extremes, granted.
If you have a seperate partition for your downloads, you will greatly cut down the rate at which the system partition gets fragmented (because downloads aren't interfering).
I use JKDefrag. Free, fast, and thourogh. It's also portable.
Here's a review site that compares nearly all of the defragging programs. Google this: "The Great Defrag Shootout VIII". Very thorough and comprehensive.
if i were to be doing a disk defrag and it was taking a long time and i wanted to play a game like wow, could i stop the defrag and then resume it later, at the same spot or would i have to start all over?

In fact if you have a old computer that has vista it may try to defrag all the time which its try to help but actualy its just taking your profamance while you are trying to use you computer/
I've tried O&O Defrag, I've tried PerfectDisk, but DiskDiskeeper with Automatic Defragmentation has been the best solution for me. It basically keeps your hard drive in top shape and defragments files all the time so your hard drive never gets in a bad shape.
It never slows down your computer during defragmentation because it doesn't have to work so hard like defragmenters with fixed schedules. Your hard drive is constantly being defragmented, so it's in a good shape to begin with.
I setup O&O Defrag to do a Complete/Access Method and Offline Defragmentation.
O&O Defrag 10 actually has a configuration wizard which allows you to defrag based upon your computer type (desktop or laptop, server or default) and activity (work/home/gaming).
The downside of that program is that it doesn't defragment directories or file metadata. So searching for files or scanning directories could still be relatively slow after defragmentation.
@3DGAMEMAN I just got O&O Defrag 12, and although I don't understand its graphics as well as the Diskeeper I'm familiar with, I see that it's doing an excellent job of monitoring my drives and "spot-defragging" as needed. Little or no drag on resources, either. Good proggie.
the xp defrag programm performs quite well and is enough for normal use. if youre fighting about every millisecond take one of the defrag progs rodney recommended. if you want to defrag your boot sector take bootvis from microsoft( not bootwiz which is a big compilation of spyware) i hope i could help
Fragmentation of the files is also one of the disadvantages of Windows. I use Linux and most Linux distributions (like Ubuntu) use Ext3 as the filesystem of choice instead of NTFS. First of all it is a journaling file system so it is less likely that the it will become corrupt in the event of a crash and it is less susceptible to fragmentation with normal use. It can become fragmented of course, but that only happens with huge amounts of I/O (servers).

unstable112 2 years ago 2
ahaha not for me. sometimes when I have to do mass downloads to give to friends, my files get so fragmented I'd have to defrag twice a day.
So a rule of thumb is that the more stuff you put into your hard drive, the more often you will have to defragment the drive.

Yes, how about Diskeeper.
I've been using it for a long time now and it's working well.
I use it to defragment manually every week and then also have it on automatic.
Which means it defragments in the background whenever you're not doing anything or much.
I have an old computer and it's really light on the system.
Plus it also has many more options, like schedules and boot-time defragmentation, a so-called "fragshield", etc.
