for some reason the bit from 0:41 to 0:48 to me looks like a hallway in a gothic church. im not sure why but it does. anyone else think about that or is just me?
Short answer: video feedback. It's a sort of video echo produced, for example, by pointing the camera at the screen on which its output is being displayed. It should work with your web-cam. It's best in a darkened room with a few small point sources of light. Experiment with relative distance, zoom, twist and tilt between camera and display. You should find all sorts of interesting stable patterns.
If I had a clue how do it, I'd also try recreating these titles. I know there're instructions on this board already, but they're not helping me much! :-(
well 625-line resolution equipment (what we use now) doesn;t give a very good pattern
405-line resolution, which is what they used when creating these, is what they used, so you'd need to find a 405-line TV and 405-line broadcast TV camera.
If you have a camcorder, I definitely recommend doing that... it keeps you entertained for hours. :-) (Incidentally, the 'spinning' thing at the end is very easy to recreate, just tilt the camera and it does it itself!)
You need a TV set and broadcast TV camera with 405-line resolution and seeing as the 405-line VHF system was abandoned in this country in 1985 it will be difficult!!!
Yeah, I tried it with a digital camera in a mirror. There were these little icons in the corners of the camera screen, so that's how I got any images at all. It came out looking like an X.
don't forget its also a good idea to bring the lighting in the room to a bare minimum and adjust the brightness and contrast on both the camera and television set.

I always loved Troughton's title sequence the most. He was great in "The Invasion".
I love the line, "Is this what you wanted, Vaughn? To be the ruler of a dead world!?"

Kind of sad that they still have these - but not most of the episodes they were made for! :-(
StephanieLives 3 years ago
Because these are on film, the episodes were on videotape. Videotape can be wiped and reused, film can't.
Ironic to your comment, the clean Hartnell title sequence has gone AWOL as well.
AidanLunn 2 years ago
What do you mean?? The Hartnell title sequence was included on the "An Unearthly Child" DVD, with sections that weren't used.
NyeTunes 2 years ago
@NyeTunes That wasn't from the *titles* film, that was from the original test footage, bits of which went into the finished title sequence.
AidanLunn 2 years ago
how did they do the titles, considering that they didn't have CGI then?

Yes. Here's hoping someone hands in episode 4 of 'The Tenth Planet', or the rest 'The Web Of Fear' in 2008.

Hey I can actually create the Hartnell sequence on my home video camera. You need to film the recording screen in the mirror and zoom in.

The way they faded out from Troughton's face in the 2nd opening clip was freaky.

What country??
I'm in the USA, and my TV is probably 10 or 12 years old. I can still do howlaround on it, though.
NyeTunes 4 years ago
The UK.
You can still do howlaround on 625-line equipment here but the results are poorer. the lower number of lines is what creates the pattern here.
