so where do you get the plain beats for the mixing? im trying to mix songs like we no speak americano and say a david guetta song and no mattter how much i try to get it in sync the lyrics clash and it sounds like crap ps i have cdjs as well
@griffinherbst in my case, if I work with cdjs, i prepare my tracks or search for extended versions, which usually include enough headroom and trailing beats for good mixing. You shouldn't use compilation, radio or short versions for mixing.
@griffinherbst that has always been the challenge of being a dj. What you need is a tweener track. One that goes nicely with the two that clash. So you mix in your tweener track and then mix in your other track. Not all tracks go together, if they sound bad together don't just force it, that sounds bad. Vocals on vocals rarely sound good together, unless they are complementing each other.
i used to dj with a midi controller and vdj with beat sync and now i bought a pair of citronic s6 decks.. the problem is my mixer and decks have a bpm reader but the BPM always change like one second theyll be eg: 128.2 the next theyll be 131 or something. HELP PLEASE
I'm not a dj I am a music producer. So I'm not familiar with dj skills but I know about music theroy and stuff like that. My question just out of curiosity, I know when I'm making a record if I'm usinng say a guitar sample and get it at the right speed it will still make the whole track sound bad if it is nit in the right key. Does the same apply to djing?
I've Beatmatch the 2 tunes i wanna play! It's sounds all good, the beats in the headphones hit at the same time as the sound from the speakers! But when i start to increase the volume on the tune i wanna bring in,the beats still sounds a bit off, even though i matched to beats! Why is this?
@ReboyGTR Try having both songs playing through the headphones at the same time. Sometimes the main system, or whatever speaker is playing the main track, can have a delay behind what your hearing in your headphones. So if this is the case, the cued track will be slightly faster then the one playing whether they are beatmatched or not. So just try using the headphones only, either both tracks in both ears at the same time or one track in each ear. Hope this helps.
@Omanastylez I've tried split cue and it really helps, but i also want to learn how to mix with single ear monitoring! The monitors (computer speakers)are right next to my ear,or at least so close a real monitor would be in a club and even though i matched the beats, they still go of!
@ReboyGTR Well if thats the case, it is likely that they are not beat matched perfectly. Ellaskins video on riding the pitch is a good one in teaching you a good way to match songs perfectly. Perfect beatmatching (beat lock) takes a bit of time during the mix. However, make sure you are using quite a small pitch range on your gear (6 - 10%), as this will make it easier to match the beats accurately.
hey i have a question to beatmatch with headphones.
should i use the split mode (for axample track1 ist one the right side and track 2 on the left) or do better hear both tracks on both sides? or should i hear track1 with one the headphone and the other one trough the speakers? what is the beast way?
@rabbeldabbel the best way is to try for yourself. what do you find easier? while doing a mix play about with your headphone level and fader and see what makes you hear it better. i always have my headphones on with both tracks on both sides of headphones but some people like it different. try everything once or twice.
Thank you ALOT, you explained everything so clearly and I was looking for like .. I don't know, just a long time and I saw this video and I understand it perfect and it's first time I mixed perfectly with your tutorial , again, thank you alot. Respect for this guy
ellaskins you are legend. learning how to use decks properly, be it turntables or CDJs, is like learning how to play an instrument, a piano for instance, you need a good teacher to show you the ropes! theres an art form to mixing and it can take years to get good at it. it's all about enjoying yourself :)
if you can beatmatch two tracks in two secs you really must be a pro.id rather say is nearly impossible to do it that fast.30 secs is already quite fast for two tracks you hear the first time i guess.or i am that bad :P
on the other hand its easier to beatmatch straight beats around 130 bpm.slow ambient stuff with shuffles and breaks like from autechre is much more harder to handle.
it doesnt take that long to get it. as long as u have an idea of then how ur music song s pattern goes it shoudnt take to long to know when to change the song . .
i have to say that this man has helped me alot while i was learning to beatmatch. but thats not what im commenting about...i just wanted to ask people if they ( when beatmatching ) listen to both tracks in the headphones while 1 is playing? i do this while beatmatching i find it way more accurate???
new to djing but im stuck between what headphones to get, i heard the Sony 7560's are good so are the mdvr700's, but seinheiser 280 was supposed to be good as well. any electro/techno dj's recommendations on these three? (i have audio technica ad700's right now but im getting a different pair for mixing / shows.)
love this guys videos. he explains everything CRYSTAL clearly....it doesn't take long to beatmatch if you know music at all. a good ear could pick it up in an hour, easy.
ive got 2 x american audio radius 1000's. when a track is playing the bpm constantly changes a little, does anyone know how to stop this? -if its possible
basically alot of songs change bpm, so bpm reading can be really different, there could be a "real" bpm meter as in exact moment, or their could be an "average" bpm meter.. so im guessing your cdj's show the "real" bpm if im wrong someone correct me, but im pretty sure thats right! hope that helped!
hi i need some help.i have 2 players pioneer cdj200 and a mixer behringer djx 750 and i want to conect them to my pc.somewone told my i need an external soundcard and a firewire but they are not really cheap.cold you tell my if you know a cheaper method.thx for readding
hi all,i have a question,if the bpm is the same on both songs you are mixing do you still have to adjust the the pitch or do you just adjust the jog wheel.
a good idear is first as you said to get the two song to the same BPM.
I get the two songs the same BPM and then matching them with the jog wheel, but i also move the pitch control. etc. I can hear that one is slightly behind, so i move the jog wheel forward, so i can hear they are matched, and then i move the pitch slightly up.
Great stuff!! First of all thank you for taking the time to do all those good tutorials, one quit question if happen to have a song with a beat 130 a another with 100 whats the best way to switch one to another thanks
quick question, if a specific cdj does not have the scratch mode, will it still make that reverse sound the turning the jog wheel anti-clockwise will the is playing
i'd like you to post a tutorial beat matching DnB. everyone always uses house or trance for tutorials with the constant bass. but what about when you don't have a constant bass. or even a constant snare? hardstep can be really hard to beat match.
im on radio too, its not too hard, you can cheat on vynal by getting the 1st tempo of a tune and then writting on all the other tunes the rought tempo, its easy that way not much messing about, dj swish
Hey Jonathan told me I can copy these videos off of youtube. Anyone know how to do that? I went to copy it, but Youtube state's that we can't copy. Can anyone help?
"If you have something cover your BPM counters on players and practice" but as shown on video, leave your mixer BPM counters uncovered just in case :)
There is cheating in djing lol its called dss dj they have a Sync Which when you have two tracks you can use the sync and it will match the beats perfectly. Ive got used to it and now its biting me in the ass.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
this guy sucks (what a nerd)
the best thing about a dj is his sence of music! most djs teach them selfs it a part of the whole expriance . i have seen some of his vids whats his other interest train spotting?
first of all, learn english grammar and spelling. most people do teach themselves, but some people don't know where to start. even if you have taught yourself already, ellaskins can give you pointers on how to go further.
K Oscarvgn11,Let's see what you can do? Cause I'm getting booked into clubs because of tips tricks and advice this guy has shown me. Where are you at as a DJ?
i ALWAYS use my BPM counter... but because it is fairly unreliable as i often (try and fail to) mix Drum n' Bass/Breaks House, as well as normal 4-to-the-floor EDM (everything else). So i can tell if they are a bit out, but it takes me a bit of time, but usually before i put song 2 in, i get the speed fairly close by using the BPM, before i drop in/fade in to the mix.
I LEARN TO MIX WITH MY FRIEND'S TURNTABLES AND HIDE THE BPM IS GOOD FOR HOME Practicing ,but i use the worst cd players in the world who they jog wheels lose to much...but is the best way to learn not the cd-j1000!
Just to add a bit for Jonathan's presentation; when he says "don't just do it like me, two or three times, do it maybe twenty or thirty times"... I'm not natively english speaker, but the way I understood that requires the following addition: you shouldn't do this all those times with the same two songs. Ok, the world is filled with songs, but it's really no real use knowing how to beatmatch two of those.
Ok, I went way over the allowed comment length. What was left out of the previous comment is here:
You need to have more material... use the same pair of songs for n times, then switch songs (or maybe better yet, switch just one of them). That way you won't be teaching yourself to "beatmatch certain songs together", but generally "beatmatch"... and that, I believe is what ppl want to learn :)
So practice & N'Joy (I really need to get a camera so I can post these comments as video responses)...
did you take anything from this tutorial? you are TRAINING YOUR EARS to hear when a song is beatmatched, you are not constructing or playing a set nor are you learning to match two certain songs, you are getting your ears used to hearing what song is out with what and adjusting to fit, if you dont understand this simple theory you really shouldnt be thinking about being DJ..
@jakeboi: yes. And using the same two songs over and over again does not train your ears. Their relative difference is always the same. Song A will *always* be n% faster than song B, no matter what. Because of this, you should use different tracks (no more than a couple of tries with the same pair) so that you really would be training your *ears* instead of just repeating the same *movements* over and over again.
Did you watch the video before posting that mate? It clearly states that you RANDOMLY SET THE TEMPO of one track and then match the other with it, hence you arent just doing 'the same movements' because you are matching different tempo beats, which in essence is what you would be doing by using different songs, you arent supposed to be mmixing anything, just matching tempos. Try and understand something before you talk about it next time eh?
@jakeboi: You know. When the difference A@0% is B@+2%, the difference A@-1% is B@+1%. No matter how randomly you set the tempo, the *relative* difference of the BPMs is immutable. So I repeat: when using the same tunes over & over again, you're not training your ears but your movements. Believe it or not, I do understand what I'm talking about :)
@uttula: but you still don't know that relative difference between them, since you are changing both pitches on both decks randomly. And the bpm counters are hidden.
Your movements doesn't judge the offbeat, and the amount needed to match, thats your ears' work -with a little help from the brain hopefully-.
I like progressive house and its so hard to beat match because there is so much going on

"If you have something cover your BPM counters on players and practice" but as shown on video, leave your mixer BPM counters uncovered just in case :)

dear johnathan just moving to cd turntables what is the best way to record my sets
iandavidwoolley 3 years ago
hello I am not J but I will try to help you :)
I use iKey Plus - it is a box which you connect to output of your mixer. You can connect pendrive (there is a USB port) to record your set.
You may choose record quality.
Hope it is helpful :)

in the digital dark here where do i pick up an ikey plus and what would be the cost thanks
iandavidwoolley 3 years ago
MiniDisc :)
miniroll32 3 years ago
on the back of the mixer find the output marked REC simply connect a phono to 3.5mm cable to it.
the 2 ends to the mixer and the headphone jack to the line in of the pc
then get some recording software like Audacity set the volumes and record... simple!

There is cheating in djing lol its called dss dj they have a Sync Which when you have two tracks you can use the sync and it will match the beats perfectly. Ive got used to it and now its biting me in the ass.

sodjs 3 years ago
I used 2 do a simular thing when i 1st started.
But wen djs are doin it this way they dnt kno if they have they got it spot on.
My advise would be to:
burn 2 of the same cd's
play same track on both cd decks
put the pitch on deck A without looking.. e.g it on +5.25
match the same track on deck B
Take the stickys off and then u can see ur result.
If u had it on +5.15 u kno ur a tad slow, +5.75 u kno ur too fast, If u have it on the +5.25 u kno u got it spot on
In this method u learn.

this guy sucks (what a nerd)
the best thing about a dj is his sence of music! most djs teach them selfs it a part of the whole expriance . i have seen some of his vids whats his other interest train spotting?
oscarvgn11 3 years ago
first of all, learn english grammar and spelling. most people do teach themselves, but some people don't know where to start. even if you have taught yourself already, ellaskins can give you pointers on how to go further.

Oh yes? Prove it.

i ALWAYS use my BPM counter... but because it is fairly unreliable as i often (try and fail to) mix Drum n' Bass/Breaks House, as well as normal 4-to-the-floor EDM (everything else). So i can tell if they are a bit out, but it takes me a bit of time, but usually before i put song 2 in, i get the speed fairly close by using the BPM, before i drop in/fade in to the mix.
dafridgemagnet 3 years ago
is it really that bad to cheat by looking at your bpm reader
i just use teh sync function on virtual DJ
thrasherpunkkid 3 years ago
Good tutorial, disco, house, tranz those are the easiest to mix, you gotta have a good ear for music to match beats of different genras.

I LEARN TO MIX WITH MY FRIEND'S TURNTABLES AND HIDE THE BPM IS GOOD FOR HOME Practicing ,but i use the worst cd players in the world who they jog wheels lose to much...but is the best way to learn not the cd-j1000!

Try it with breakbeat, you can just foreget the bpm counters...
Atslabs 3 years ago 3
@atslabs: that comment actually brought a smile on my face :)
uttula 3 years ago
And one more thing... don't try this with current "in top charts" house-tracks. Most of them are 128 BPM, so you have nothing to do :D
uttula 3 years ago
Just to add a bit for Jonathan's presentation; when he says "don't just do it like me, two or three times, do it maybe twenty or thirty times"... I'm not natively english speaker, but the way I understood that requires the following addition: you shouldn't do this all those times with the same two songs. Ok, the world is filled with songs, but it's really no real use knowing how to beatmatch two of those.
uttula 3 years ago
Ok, I went way over the allowed comment length. What was left out of the previous comment is here:
You need to have more material... use the same pair of songs for n times, then switch songs (or maybe better yet, switch just one of them). That way you won't be teaching yourself to "beatmatch certain songs together", but generally "beatmatch"... and that, I believe is what ppl want to learn :)
So practice & N'Joy (I really need to get a camera so I can post these comments as video responses)...
uttula 3 years ago
did you take anything from this tutorial? you are TRAINING YOUR EARS to hear when a song is beatmatched, you are not constructing or playing a set nor are you learning to match two certain songs, you are getting your ears used to hearing what song is out with what and adjusting to fit, if you dont understand this simple theory you really shouldnt be thinking about being DJ..
jakeboi 3 years ago
@jakeboi: yes. And using the same two songs over and over again does not train your ears. Their relative difference is always the same. Song A will *always* be n% faster than song B, no matter what. Because of this, you should use different tracks (no more than a couple of tries with the same pair) so that you really would be training your *ears* instead of just repeating the same *movements* over and over again.
uttula 3 years ago
Did you watch the video before posting that mate? It clearly states that you RANDOMLY SET THE TEMPO of one track and then match the other with it, hence you arent just doing 'the same movements' because you are matching different tempo beats, which in essence is what you would be doing by using different songs, you arent supposed to be mmixing anything, just matching tempos. Try and understand something before you talk about it next time eh?
jakeboi 3 years ago
@jakeboi: You know. When the difference A@0% is B@+2%, the difference A@-1% is B@+1%. No matter how randomly you set the tempo, the *relative* difference of the BPMs is immutable. So I repeat: when using the same tunes over & over again, you're not training your ears but your movements. Believe it or not, I do understand what I'm talking about :)
uttula 3 years ago
Yawn..you still dont get it.
jakeboi 3 years ago
@uttula: but you still don't know that relative difference between them, since you are changing both pitches on both decks randomly. And the bpm counters are hidden.
Your movements doesn't judge the offbeat, and the amount needed to match, thats your ears' work -with a little help from the brain hopefully-.
