  • I like progressive house and its so hard to beat match because there is so much going on

  • Big Fan of your videos.. You have been of great help for me :)))... Thanks

  • I would love to be at some huge rave and the DJ just stops everything and starts explaining the process and technique he's performing XD

  • Geez guy, you talk a lot. Well, too much to the point of annoying. You are good at dee jaying but just shut up and you will be much better. Geez!!!

  • @djnthando No, you need to shut up.

  • ive allways loved this guys videos, he gets to the point

  • Thanks to watching all your tutorials im starting to learn, check DJ Shaklin. Been mixing for 3 weeks now

  • Great video!

  • ey sir, i would just like to ask how do you phrase match and beat match at the same time, do you beat match first?then when you already match the beat then thats the time that you will start to count to find your cue????ey sir, i would just like to ask how do you phrase match and beat match at the same time, do you beat match first?then when you already match the beat then thats the time that you will start to count to find your cue????

  • Im glad this guy isnt putting up his vids on expert village, they dont deserve great videos like this one, ive learned alot, ! Thanks:)

  • Duuuude! I just bought some vinyle from htfr. What a coincidence.

Great stuff. Your tutorials are the bomb!

  • The BPM on the Cdj's are never correct anyway...

  • @Maerskstunes yeas they are, if your CDJ has bpm in % like my 850s then 1bpm = 0.7% phased. so if i need to raise the cd 3 BPM, then i raise it 2.1%

  • GRAET VIDEO :)))

  • Verry good tips for a beginner. :)

  • thanks man! helped alot

  • to be honest,i really love your video, i'm sure that you are a good DJ!!!

i wish one day i will be like you!!!

    From IRAN (Persia) :))

  • Brilliant . and like you said ,"your marathon is a virgin in the night club" \m/

  • can u make a tut on how ot beat match for pc coz i cant use my head phones to switch between decks :/

  • @flooddoomerGAMING Then keep your crossfader in the center so you can hear both decks on the main channel.

  • u r simply the best brother..!!!love ur tutorials...!!!best dj tutor ever..!!!:)

  • What happened to your T shirt?? ahahhahahahah

  • you are the best!!!

  • Your amazing! So much help!

  • does it matter when you start the 2nd deck or not?

  • I picked up beatmaching quite quickly. But what i have problem with is when it starts to go off deciding weather it need to speed up or slow down...

  • amazing guy =D

  • Funny Guy ^^

  • Brilliant mate

  • Where do u get your beats?

  • are those the same songs?

  • WoW now that I have My cdjs It ALL makes sense :D Thx A LOT!!!

  • I am going have to do this as part of my warm-up drills. Some good tips here.

  • Wow, that actually made a lot of sense.

  • so where do you get the plain beats for the mixing? im trying to mix songs like we no speak americano and say a david guetta song and no mattter how much i try to get it in sync the lyrics clash and it sounds like crap ps i have cdjs as well

  • @griffinherbst in my case, if I work with cdjs, i prepare my tracks or search for extended versions, which usually include enough headroom and trailing beats for good mixing. You shouldn't use compilation, radio or short versions for mixing.

  • @griffinherbst that has always been the challenge of being a dj. What you need is a tweener track. One that goes nicely with the two that clash. So you mix in your tweener track and then mix in your other track. Not all tracks go together, if they sound bad together don't just force it, that sounds bad. Vocals on vocals rarely sound good together, unless they are complementing each other.

  • great videos buddy they inspire me,

i used to dj with a midi controller and vdj with beat sync and now i bought a pair of citronic s6 decks.. the problem is my mixer and decks have a bpm reader but the BPM always change like one second theyll be eg: 128.2 the next theyll be 131 or something. HELP PLEASE

  • thumbs up when he covers the bpm counter!

  • I'm not a dj I am a music producer. So I'm not familiar with dj skills but I know about music theroy and stuff like that. My question just out of curiosity, I know when I'm making a record if I'm usinng say a guitar sample and get it at the right speed it will still make the whole track sound bad if it is nit in the right key. Does the same apply to djing?

  • @FunkMasterKRoc yea it can its called harmonic mixing

  • Practice*

  • Love all your videos. They answer so many of my questions! Bless you!

  • dude your a fuckin good teacher! well easy to understand! good job man!

    x

  • are you a wizard?

  • @Splurgeyourheadoff Move the pitch.

  • i love you

  • DUUUDE!

it only took you exactly 10 sec. to beatmatch you´re a god :O

  • they are both the same song?

  • I got a problem with this!

I've Beatmatch the 2 tunes i wanna play! It's sounds all good, the beats in the headphones hit at the same time as the sound from the speakers! But when i start to increase the volume on the tune i wanna bring in,the beats still sounds a bit off, even though i matched to beats! Why is this?

    Help!

  • @ReboyGTR Try having both songs playing through the headphones at the same time. Sometimes the main system, or whatever speaker is playing the main track, can have a delay behind what your hearing in your headphones. So if this is the case, the cued track will be slightly faster then the one playing whether they are beatmatched or not. So just try using the headphones only, either both tracks in both ears at the same time or one track in each ear. Hope this helps.

  • @Omanastylez I've tried split cue and it really helps, but i also want to learn how to mix with single ear monitoring! The monitors (computer speakers)are right next to my ear,or at least so close a real monitor would be in a club and even though i matched the beats, they still go of!

  • @ReboyGTR Well if thats the case, it is likely that they are not beat matched perfectly. Ellaskins video on riding the pitch is a good one in teaching you a good way to match songs perfectly. Perfect beatmatching (beat lock) takes a bit of time during the mix. However, make sure you are using quite a small pitch range on your gear (6 - 10%), as this will make it easier to match the beats accurately.

  • 2:23 sounds good

  • hey i have a question to beatmatch with headphones.

should i use the split mode (for axample track1 ist one the right side and track 2 on the left) or do better hear both tracks on both sides? or should i hear track1 with one the headphone and the other one trough the speakers? what is the beast way?

hope u can help me :D

    sorry vor my bad english

  • @rabbeldabbel the best way is to try for yourself. what do you find easier? while doing a mix play about with your headphone level and fader and see what makes you hear it better. i always have my headphones on with both tracks on both sides of headphones but some people like it different. try everything once or twice.

  • Thank you ALOT, you explained everything so clearly and I was looking for like .. I don't know, just a long time and I saw this video and I understand it perfect and it's first time I mixed perfectly with your tutorial , again, thank you alot. Respect for this guy

  • better than what i have seen everywhere else!!! good stuff

  • Comment removed

  • If one track is 1 bpm + or - the other, how quickly will you (the crowd) be able to hear that its off?

  • if you can beatmatch two tracks in two secs you really must be a pro.id rather say is nearly impossible to do it that fast.30 secs is already quite fast for two tracks you hear the first time i guess.or i am that bad :P

on the other hand its easier to beatmatch straight beats around 130 bpm.slow ambient stuff with shuffles and breaks like from autechre is much more harder to handle.

  • @asnierkishcowboy - Lol... Why would you beatmatch a song you've never heard?

Also anything with a live drummer on the recording will be damn near impossible to keep beatmatched for more than... 30 seconds.

  • cheers for this dude very helpful i am having quite a lot of diffulculty learning to mix but like you said it's practise.

  • The cover up BPM meters is a good idea. I usually tell myself not to look at them, but I do it anyway :p

Its nice how you match without pitch bending btw.

  • Isn't the wife gonna give you a rollicking for not getting on with the decorating? ;~) props cont' your a good man for doing this for the younguns

  • it doesnt take that long to get it. as long as u have an idea of then how ur music song s pattern goes it shoudnt take to long to know when to change the song . .

  • what are the best cd decks 2 get , ive never mixed or any thing before ???? thanks guys

  • Awesome tutorial :) Thanks alot for the upload!

  • Hey J,quick question!

What to you like to use when making the transition from tune to tune? The Crossfader or The Channel Faders?

  • i have to say that this man has helped me alot while i was learning to beatmatch. but thats not what im commenting about...i just wanted to ask people if they ( when beatmatching ) listen to both tracks in the headphones while 1 is playing? i do this while beatmatching i find it way more accurate???

  • brilliant as usual...this guy is the best teacher.

  • Great video!!! I just can repeat: "just wht i needed." ;)

  • A great video, just what i needed.

  • Legend!!

  • Skullcandy sux!

  • Do not get skullcandys, they look shit and are poor quality and the drivers are not good enough

  • @Crazymanbang ?

    y

    it looks cool :D

  • Great vid, thanks :)

  • crea tutoriales en español man please saludos!

  • new to djing but im stuck between what headphones to get, i heard the Sony 7560's are good so are the mdvr700's, but seinheiser 280 was supposed to be good as well. any electro/techno dj's recommendations on these three? (i have audio technica ad700's right now but im getting a different pair for mixing / shows.)

  • @STR4F3 I got the TECHNICS RP DJ 1200

absolutely top !!! i´m very confident with those...

  • @STR4F3 I have the sennheiser 280. Really good and clear. So much better than my monitors.

  • any hints on how to tell which track is infront of the other 1? i can do it when i know which track is faster but not when i dont

  • love this guys videos. he explains everything CRYSTAL clearly....it doesn't take long to beatmatch if you know music at all. a good ear could pick it up in an hour, easy.

  • Amazing! I love your videos

  • wow, i'm really impressed of how you give the information and whole material set! it's really helpful, thank you very very much

  • how menny sets of decks

  • how long did it take you to get good with beatmatching?

  • I heard a few months

  • ive got 2 x american audio radius 1000's. when a track is playing the bpm constantly changes a little, does anyone know how to stop this? -if its possible

  • basically alot of songs change bpm, so bpm reading can be really different, there could be a "real" bpm meter as in exact moment, or their could be an "average" bpm meter.. so im guessing your cdj's show the "real" bpm if im wrong someone correct me, but im pretty sure thats right! hope that helped!

  • same problem with Numark Axis 9's... I don't even look at the BPM on the screen, its not a good reference, you just have to beatmatch by your ears

  • samen with my denon's and my mixer, guesse you better just paint that place on your screen black xD

  • I like this guy, great tutorial

  • wow i learn alot evry time i whatch a vid of yours. verry nice i love it. keepit up ;)

  • hi i need some help.i have 2 players pioneer cdj200 and a mixer behringer djx 750 and i want to conect them to my pc.somewone told my i need an external soundcard and a firewire but they are not really cheap.cold you tell my if you know a cheaper method.thx for readding

  • good looking out dudee

  • hi all,i have a question,if the bpm is the same on both songs you are mixing do you still have to adjust the the pitch or do you just adjust the jog wheel.

    cheers

  • a good idear is first as you said to get the two song to the same BPM.

I get the two songs the same BPM and then matching them with the jog wheel, but i also move the pitch control. etc. I can hear that one is slightly behind, so i move the jog wheel forward, so i can hear they are matched, and then i move the pitch slightly up.

  • i mean the pitch down :P (so its faster)

  • what turntables are those?

    where can i buy those?

  • pioneer cdj 1000mk3's

  • Great stuff!! First of all thank you for taking the time to do all those good tutorials, one quit question if happen to have a song with a beat 130 a another with 100 whats the best way to switch one to another thanks

  • loop some vocals or a bassless sound

  • i love this man = } LoooL

  • great vid!

  • This guy is brilliant !

  • Does anyone know how to (on VDJ) how to play one song out of da headfones and one songs out speakers?

  • Love your work.. Thanks.

  • Thanks a lot for the lesson. I am training my ears now. It's greatly appreciated! :)

  • should not be where u repleyed sayun u shouldnt be there

  • This guys awesome, he's got all this top spec equipment, yet dresses like a tramp!?

  • hahahah wow guy... having the "top spec equipment" doesnt determine how good someone is. materalistic fool.

  • so you're saying he's no good?

    read what i said idiot.

if he can afford all these decks.... at least buy a new tee shirt!

  • Hello there, ive been trying to find out the difference is between the MK1, MK2 and MK3, i had a pair of cdjs 800.

can you give some feedback on this subject

    thanks a lot

  • ITS SO HARD :S

  • no it's not

  • its same song are the same oon the decks

  • thanks worked 4 me

  • i'd like you to post a tutorial beat matching DnB. everyone always uses house or trance for tutorials with the constant bass. but what about when you don't have a constant bass. or even a constant snare? hardstep can be really hard to beat match.

  • I agree, that wud be awesome!!

  • you should listen out for the snares and hi hats and match them as the beats vary greatly

  • hey man can you NAME! some good songs to beat match but i want them around the same (bpm) ???

  • its very hard to beat match im a radio dj and find it very hard sometimes

  • im on radio too, its not too hard, you can cheat on vynal by getting the 1st tempo of a tune and then writting on all the other tunes the rought tempo, its easy that way not much messing about, dj swish

  • you shouldnt be there then...

  • I'm still rubbish at this!

    practice makes perfect i supose

  • ma fa il muratore ????? non lo sapevo.... la maglietta è sporca di intonaco......

  • Hey Jonathan told me I can copy these videos off of youtube. Anyone know how to do that? I went to copy it, but Youtube state's that we can't copy. Can anyone help?

  • type in free youtube converter in google an download it its easy mate

  • how are you men to know wot the bpm is in the 1st place

  • hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha very very funny...

  • I thought it was! Obviously 8 people didn't...

  • what's so funny???

  • "If you have something cover your BPM counters on players and practice" but as shown on video, leave your mixer BPM counters uncovered just in case :)

  • dear johnathan just moving to cd turntables what is the best way to record my sets

  • hello I am not J but I will try to help you :)

I use iKey Plus - it is a box which you connect to output of your mixer. You can connect pendrive (there is a USB port) to record your set.

    You may choose record quality.

    Hope it is helpful :)

  • in the digital dark here where do i pick up an ikey plus and what would be the cost thanks

  • MiniDisc :)

  • on the back of the mixer find the output marked REC simply connect a phono to 3.5mm cable to it.

the 2 ends to the mixer and the headphone jack to the line in of the pc

then get some recording software like Audacity set the volumes and record... simple!

  • There is cheating in djing lol its called dss dj they have a Sync Which when you have two tracks you can use the sync and it will match the beats perfectly. Ive got used to it and now its biting me in the ass.

  • THIS GUYS AWESOME, GOOD TRAINER!

  • what 2 songs are you using?

  • hey mr i post a video responce tk a look

  • pc program bullshit....

  • yup often here a slide and everyone can tell tis a program... its shite

  • great vid, helpfull as always. not sure there's such thing as "cheating" when it comes to music though.

  • my fiend uses the same mixer at odeon-roppong tokio i will post an video response after i dowland the video

  • I used 2 do a simular thing when i 1st started.

But wen djs are doin it this way they dnt kno if they have they got it spot on.

    My advise would be to:

burn 2 of the same cd's

play same track on both cd decks

put the pitch on deck A without looking.. e.g it on +5.25

match the same track on deck B

Take the stickys off and then u can see ur result.

If u had it on +5.15 u kno ur a tad slow, +5.75 u kno ur too fast, If u have it on the +5.25 u kno u got it spot on

    In this method u learn.

  • Thats how i Learnt.

  • first of all, learn english grammar and spelling. most people do teach themselves, but some people don't know where to start. even if you have taught yourself already, ellaskins can give you pointers on how to go further.

  • and proud

  • K Oscarvgn11,Let's see what you can do? Cause I'm getting booked into clubs because of tips tricks and advice this guy has shown me. Where are you at as a DJ?

  • Oh yes? Prove it.

  • i ALWAYS use my BPM counter... but because it is fairly unreliable as i often (try and fail to) mix Drum n' Bass/Breaks House, as well as normal 4-to-the-floor EDM (everything else). So i can tell if they are a bit out, but it takes me a bit of time, but usually before i put song 2 in, i get the speed fairly close by using the BPM, before i drop in/fade in to the mix.

  • is it really that bad to cheat by looking at your bpm reader

i just use teh sync function on virtual DJ

  • Good tutorial, disco, house, tranz those are the easiest to mix, you gotta have a good ear for music to match beats of different genras.

  • I LEARN TO MIX WITH MY FRIEND'S TURNTABLES AND HIDE THE BPM IS GOOD FOR HOME Practicing ,but i use the worst cd players in the world who they jog wheels lose to much...but is the best way to learn not the cd-j1000!

  • you still train wrecked of the start. sorry.

  • Great Vid, Gotta Love it! Keep up the great work,.

  • i get it r just getting used to the rythem to match the same beat to sound perfect

    nice.

  • what are the track names?

  • Try it with breakbeat, you can just foreget the bpm counters...

  • @atslabs: that comment actually brought a smile on my face :)

  • And one more thing... don't try this with current "in top charts" house-tracks. Most of them are 128 BPM, so you have nothing to do :D

  • Just to add a bit for Jonathan's presentation; when he says "don't just do it like me, two or three times, do it maybe twenty or thirty times"... I'm not natively english speaker, but the way I understood that requires the following addition: you shouldn't do this all those times with the same two songs. Ok, the world is filled with songs, but it's really no real use knowing how to beatmatch two of those.

  • Ok, I went way over the allowed comment length. What was left out of the previous comment is here:

You need to have more material... use the same pair of songs for n times, then switch songs (or maybe better yet, switch just one of them). That way you won't be teaching yourself to "beatmatch certain songs together", but generally "beatmatch"... and that, I believe is what ppl want to learn :)

So practice & N'Joy (I really need to get a camera so I can post these comments as video responses)...

  • did you take anything from this tutorial? you are TRAINING YOUR EARS to hear when a song is beatmatched, you are not constructing or playing a set nor are you learning to match two certain songs, you are getting your ears used to hearing what song is out with what and adjusting to fit, if you dont understand this simple theory you really shouldnt be thinking about being DJ..

  • @jakeboi: yes. And using the same two songs over and over again does not train your ears. Their relative difference is always the same. Song A will *always* be n% faster than song B, no matter what. Because of this, you should use different tracks (no more than a couple of tries with the same pair) so that you really would be training your *ears* instead of just repeating the same *movements* over and over again.

  • Did you watch the video before posting that mate? It clearly states that you RANDOMLY SET THE TEMPO of one track and then match the other with it, hence you arent just doing 'the same movements' because you are matching different tempo beats, which in essence is what you would be doing by using different songs, you arent supposed to be mmixing anything, just matching tempos. Try and understand something before you talk about it next time eh?

  • @jakeboi: You know. When the difference A@0% is B@+2%, the difference A@-1% is B@+1%. No matter how randomly you set the tempo, the *relative* difference of the BPMs is immutable. So I repeat: when using the same tunes over & over again, you're not training your ears but your movements. Believe it or not, I do understand what I'm talking about :)

  • Yawn..you still dont get it.

  • @uttula: but you still don't know that relative difference between them, since you are changing both pitches on both decks randomly. And the bpm counters are hidden.

Your movements doesn't judge the offbeat, and the amount needed to match, thats your ears' work -with a little help from the brain hopefully-.
