i hate the way they play bass in phantom. theyre all about tone but tone doesnt matter when you play so soft no one can hear them. in my opinion the only way to go is cadets style or any east coast sound is always good
What?? Do you know what sound quality is??? Dont get me wrong, I love how the Cadets play, but in since 2006 theres no one better about playing the drum. Their approach to the drum is amazing. I love it! I wish more corps would copy. I know thats just me tho.
Random question: what is it about marching snares that makes them sound different from what you normally hear on a kit? Is it just the tuning, or is it in the build and materials also?
both. the heads are made out of something different than just skin like a kit snare. marching snare heads are made out of kevlar, and tuned very tightly.
i think this goes up there with the most well written music for marching percussion ever!!! just so tasteful... even the hard stuff comes off so fluidly!
other way around, My son is the tenor on the end, I did get some good video of the snares in some of the other parts of this lot. Hard to shoot the basses, maybe from the end but even then probably can't get both hands. Go to the URL at the end of the video, there is a bunch more of the lot, snares and basses. Really need a camera on each section to do it right, mostly I was just tryinmg to get good audio.
Jonathan worked hard, like the rest, but it's really Paul Rennick who is amazing, turning out drumlines like this year after year. He's our generation's J.S. Bach! (or whatever).
This is amazingly clean, but judges also take the book into consideration. Compared to BD (minus bd's drum break) Bds book was alot more demanding. Also reason why the judge went crazy over bd's break is because they kept sooo clean while doing all the movement. Yeah anyone can play and move like that but sounding clean with 20 others isnt as easy as it looks.
@giovanniluevano bd wins because they get slotted high. their shows are terrible every fucking year yet they still get first. DCI is pure politics, even the drum numbers are bullshit sometimes.
I dont know about finals for the show. But in the lot I think the cleanest was Bluecoats, check out some of their vids, tickless. This vid has a few ticks that actually stick out when you listen. Meh BD did some AMAZING ticks in the lot but their on field show must have been much better.
That's sick, the hornline is equally as impressive, I love Phantom, my first place I want to march when i get a chance to march junior corps... Damn school scheduling an AP's and Finals..
You can go to the URL at the end of the video for the whole Phantom warmup recorded in 24 bit stereo as *.wav files, also some higher-res mpeg videos with hi-fi audio.
Well, I haven't posted them yet. I was recording the whole time so there's about 2 hours of the semifinals lot. I also got the semis bass and tenor sectionals. There seems to be a ton of videos of the same thing, so I never made it a priority to post them. However, if there's enough demand, I might be convinced otherwise.
How tall is that snare side quad?

Materials, build, it's really different. The drum heads are a whole ton tighter and made of a different matterial.
peepers12 2 years ago
There is only two things that set them apart.
1. Nylon snares
2. depth
Its possible to make a marching drum sound like a standard kit snare
