That's true, Loretta is certainly one of the greats along with Barbara Mandrell and Dolly. What is even more admirable is their ability, (although Barbara has now retired, but she suffered a lot in the accident), to sustain their creativity over decades. Today Dolly Parton's Better Day album soared into UK charts, all genres mixed,, at number 9 and it just came out there on August 30/31st; She got a lot of airplay on BBC. Just goes to show, if you get played,, people will pay attention.
This is a great song. Unfortunately, all those years ago when Dolly Parton recorded it, views were narrower and it was considered to riskee, just like Down From Dover. So such songs were side tracked as people in the country music business didn't want to take risks with songs that might upset sensibilities. Dolly paved the way at that time in dealing with diffirent themes. She's still doing it her way today.
@yu3p2x1 you hit the nail on the head only herself and Loretta Lynn were doing risque songs then came Barbara Mandrell men were allowed to do it for the most part Dolly n Loretta has had some songs banned but through it all they served and paved the way today's singer male and female should bow down at their royal feet
im a 24 year old whiteboy i play wargames listen to rock, rap and hip hop,... and i straight love dolly's music she has a very beutiful voice my step mom got me stuck on her and im glad she did thats real music right there.
listening to Dolly being interviewed on radio 2 was like a tonic. She sounds like a beautiful human being and i would love it if she were my next door neighbour!
this song is so lovely i am in love with a lovely man who is going away and i will never see him again how my heart aches for this man he played this song at his house one lovely sunny afternoon and i will always remember how we spent the day it was beautiful so like the lyrics in this song my heart is indeed broken i will always love you paul always xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
I am not a 'country' fan but I heard this on the radio the other day and had to listen to it again. What a fantastic voice Dolly has and the sentiments strike a chord with anyone who's loved and lost.A fantastic song sung by a truly fantastic singer.
this is what i call good honest music..i got brought up on elvis ..country ....rock n roll..and a bitta irish...and to me this is lovely..and we live just outside london....oh and i was in nappies when this song came out.....
It does sound like "My life is likened to a bargain store",but everywhere I checked for the lyrics it says "my life is like unto a bargain store". It doesn't even make proper sense. Anyways, not really my problem :)
@Iwillsucceed1 I really wouldn't question what you do not understand.... Proper sense hahahaha Lets pick on you.. Is your problem sense you commented on it
' my life is like unto a bargain store'? no no no !!!! the line is " my life is likened to a bargain store " if your going to post the lyrics at least get them correct my friend !!!
then just listen to the lyrics if you doubt what i say. clear as day what she says and not all websites are perfect, some make as many mistakes as the rest of us. remember the people who put the info up are also humans....
Yes, it is definately "my life is likened to a bargain store." Even if Iwillsucceed1 found the lyrics and it said otherwise, it does not make sense. We do not have to believe everything we read and said that way, it does not make any sense at all. No matter.............let's all enjoy this terrific song!
all i can say is thank you for this great song xx

@Iwillsucceed1 "Like unto" is Queen's English, rarely used in USA"s heavily modified slang. But it is quite proper and does make perfect sense.

this from dollies homepage:
My life is like unto a bargain store
And I may have just what you're lookin' for
If you don't mind the fact that all the merchandise is used
But with a little mending it could be as good as new
