Trust me, as someone who has flown Cessnas, but not the King Air, it's a totally different type of flying. Thys guy did an amazing job! For one, a Cessna kind of lazily glides in for a landing, and will do so with the power cut on a day without a crosswind. It's really quite easy. OTOH, the King Air has to be flown "hot" right down to the ground, which means you are landing FAST. It's MUCH harder.
Well I had one heck of a day, it was a emotional roller coaster. First I took off in this beautiful King Air, it made me happy. My friend died, that made me sad. I operated an aircraft that was out of my experience level, that made me scared. I landed the King Air, I felt joy. I earned a type rating in 30 minutes, I'm glad about that.
good job my first flight in a multi complex was in a seminole and i was so behind the aircraft it was a very difficult flight and i was in a light multi trainer cant imagine how difficult that situation was
Plus, White was NOT instrument rated over top a cloud layer and out over the Gulf with a baby blue sky going into a baby blue sea with NO visual references or horizon and the controller trying to get him to make a 180* turn.
Probably do not have those issues on MS Flight Sim X, I figure.
Doug a terrific job, as a King air pilot myself I have to tell you fantastic job and the situation with your pilot did not make it any easier my hat goes off to you
I've got over 1000 hours on flight simulator and 1 hour on a Cessna 172. And i must say. Flying a real airplane is easier than flying an airplane in a flight simulator
@OriginalAtomicSheep Umm it's just easier. Easier to control, find the buttons, navigate, land, takeoff everything is easier. Except that you know that if you make a mistake you are risking your life.
Yes and no. I find I fly better in aircraft then in the sim but a sim Is too predictable; especially with weather and flight characteristics. Go fly on a day with some heavy chop, the sim will feel a lot easier to control. @robloxguggi
@1969LEO1969 Well in the sim you don't got fears. You're not flying with your life in you hands. You can adjust the weather and you can do a barrel roll with a 737 15 ft off the ground, the wings clipping the terrain and nothing happens.
That's why it's a sim.
But i still find it easier to fly a real cessna where you can feel what you're doing and you're having a good time. I find it much more fun and easier. But that's just me.
Fam flight is always easy because instructor trim the plane for you, and you only trun left right or up down while he is using rudder to co-ordinate your turns. Things get trick when you fly it.
@EveningsGlory He has 150 hours and has to ask if he shuts the throttle off after landing? I don't know the glide ratio of a King Air, though, I'm sure he could have landed with the throttle idle no problem.. (Psst.. physics) Err.. Pitch for airspeed and throttle for altitude is what I was told, as well as the only thing that really makes sense if you think about it..
@motoballz On a T tail, you cannot do pitch for airspeed power for altitude. The reason it works on a cessna it the slipstream from the propeller pushing on the tail.
@stove936 It goes for all fixed wing aircraft. Think about it for a while, And maybe, just maybe you'll get why they teach that. (I flt a pa-38 all the time(Piper Tomahawk). Look that up and see what you notice about it.)
@stove936 although motoballz is a jackass in his response, he is correct. Airspeed is a function of the wings angle of attack while altitude is a fuction of power. You can trade speed for altitude (called "zooming") but its a very short term tradeoff. It has nothing to do with the propeller, the same affect can be seen in a glider with any type of tail.
@EveningsGlory theres a difference of licences... what he had experience on was probably just a sport or private licence on single engine variable RPM engine... getting into a full IFR twin variable pitch prop could be quite a shock if your firend dies beside you
@aescobar32 licenses have very little to do with an autopilot systems. Lots of single engine planes have autopilots, and ALL have an Autopilot disconnect switch.
@EveningsGlory why would he know what it means? a typical C172 isn't equipped with an auto-pilot, and most PP-ASEL's, regardless of hours (150 is a low-time pilot, there're student pilots with those hours), have never flown a plane with an AP before.
@EveningsGlory I have flown over 300hrs and have had the privilege to go in a king air. In the circumstances the guy should be applauded. At that point in time he might well have wanted some reassurance that he was doing the right thing. Well done Doug you did a good job.
@EveningsGlory 150 hours doesn't mean you know jack shit about auto pilot. Even then, if he did, chances are he had a very low end one without warning lights for when you disconnect.
@EveningsGlory Have you ever seen that annunciator in a cessna 152 training machine? I didn't think so. There are 1000 hour navajo pilots who could step into a Beech 1900 and not understand half of the annunciators and what they mean when they are illuminated.
@EveningsGlory I've got 100 hours now and if I were in that situation where I just witnessed the pilot die in front of me, I probably would've said the same thing
@EveningsGlory Yeah...but he might not have flown anything with an autopilot before. Not to mention not every autopilot works the same and he was hand flying a king air with no twin-time in his logbook, much less turbine twin-time...he was a bit overwhelmed. Lol :-)
@bradc314 I'd say you can only log time on aircraft you've been checked out on, he wouldn't have been checked out on this King Air after only flying a Cessna 172.
Even do he had probably a private pilot licenses he is still a passenger and is not the same flying a single engine aircraft than flying a king air, there's alot of difference, but nice job.
Haha. Oh, so there are intelligent people making comments on youtube! You are absolutley right. But, any grown upp human would be able to stop a bus if the driver was having a heart attack. But the average passanger sure doesn't know how to land an airplane, you follow me?

wow this happened at an airport right near me! lol I've talked to that same controller and landed on that same runway :P weird

For a low time single engine vfr pilot this guy did an amazing job
He kept his head on the ball and asked the right questions.
The King Air is just barely a 1 Pilot aircraft...certified for single pilot operation but almost too much airplane for 1 person.
If the flight had been ifr or in weather the outcome would not have been pretty.
Give the guy all the credit for walking away with an intact airplane.

White had zero experience with an auto pilot. zero with retractable gear, zero with turbines, zero with multi engine.
You flight sim guys need to get off your office chair and try the real thing where you do not get to "reboot" or "retry."
Throw the wife and kids and a dead guy 2 foot from you drooling on you for extra measure and see if you can 'get it done,' like the redneck did.
P.S. 'Evenings Glory', Cessana 172's do not have "AP disc" buttons,"
