This was the video that made me fall in love with Against Me!. It wasn't about them, it was about their fans. This is probably one of the greatest fan involved music videos ever. After their most recent album, I wish they got back to speaking for the fans and not the industry. The message of, we were suckers but now we're not, is not the right way to go. It makes the takeover of hard working americans seem like it's matter of fact when it's what they should be fighting for.
I love to read everyone argue over the sell out thing. Truth is they fucking suck now. This shit gives me chills and a smile. Their new shit is exactly that, shit. Radio ready! Hell last time I seen them they had a third guitarist. FUCKED
For all those saying "they have transitioned to something they love doing".... I will gladly argue that they have failed as a movement. I don't care how many f**kiing records you sell....the energy, emotion, and god damned heart put into a video that you see above can not be matched. The video above changed lives. Literally changed lives. They simply don't have that impact anymore. If you get a chill from their new records, i'll show you 1,000 chills from their old records.
tom is still punk as fuck. i've always been under the impression that punk is about being subversive, defining your own reality and having some fun pissing people off in the process. this is EXACTLY what they did.
against me has managed to piss off more people and get under the skin of more punknews.org checking, bed-wetting complainers than any other band i can think of.
if you SERIOUSLY think that a band signed to a major label can't be punk or have morals, you are really, really stupid.
What happened to these days and these shows? What happened to ethics, morals, and a backbone??? Man, talk about selling out! And I'm not some dumb kid using that phrase lightly. I'm 40 years old and I've been going to shows for over 26 years. THIS is the definition of "selling out"!!!
@vadermask they "sold out" by evolving into a different music form that they enjoy writing/performing and also happen to get paid well to do it? Now if they suddenly became bubble gum pop, and started singing about bitches and money, then yes, you could call them sell outs. For a 40 year old, you sure need to grow up.
Fat Wreck Records isn't even a major label. Tom Gabel is still punk as punk can get. Whatever the fuck that meant. They still write and sing about the things they've always been about since day one. If you're talking about ethics and morals and backbone, I believe Tom's been able to show that he has all of those. They're not crusties for crying out loud.
I was debating going to see them in two days and this video literally almost brought a tear to my eye because I know I'll never see this AM! again....I don't even want to go to the show now. I want my memory of them to be times like these.
I wish I was there. This is so epic, man. This is how a rock concert suppose to be. AM! come to Brazil.!!!But I'm going to the USA in july. I'll try my best to go to an AM! show.
Man. I got such crazy goosebumps watching this. I had the good fortune to see against me end on this once, and it was hands down the greatest ending to a show, ever.
Wow, just fucking awesome. This is one of the best performances I have ever seen. The whole thing is so fucking punk, the energy of the band/crowd. the fact they are on the floor surrounded by fans, the total unison of everything. Just amazing.
god watching this kinda breaks my heart. wish I had been around for this. I'd dropkick my dog out the back window for a chance to see these guys like this.
alrite i must say ppl who are saying they changed to a larger label to secure their future for their families and all thts shit i mean they started playing because music was their passion and u can hear the emotion in their earlier songs now it seems kind of lifeless and i dont even care that theyre on a major label its just the fact that they deliberately let tht label change their sound so more people would like it instead of playing the music they love for the people who love it awesome vid
What happened to you guys?! I can't watch this video without getting a chill down my spine, the energy and honesty of it is almost unbearable. Whatever happened to writing songs that meant something, even if just to you? Sad.
I saw them in 2004 at a show like this on ground level, and I've seen them play large clubs. I have to say, there's a realness and intensity to these ground level shows. Sadly, if you didn't see them before 2004, you'll probably never get to see them like this again. Heartbreaking.
@one30seventh I saw them in a bar in Mobile, AL this past June. They still play small shows. I'm going to seem them in Florida in a few weeks too. 3 days in a row. I'm a stalker.
This is what live fucking music is, not some pop bullshit artist getting their whore on with a bunch of gay choreographed dancers on a million dollar stage
I think being able to have a future is what's important. Playing shows for a big mac sort of gets old, especially when you are aging and thinking that you do not want to be doing that to live at age 50.
Or the guys who wanted a band that plays loud and hard every night. And doesn't care how many people are counted at the door. That would travel one million miles and ask for nothin but a plate of food and place to rest.
@br00t4lpowermetalomg Money, tom gabel is a douchebag. he shat all over the old lables that made those guys so big in the punk scene, after they signed with a big label. I still love them, but yeah I don't have much respect for that dude.
@br00t4lpowermetalomg dude I went to an against me concert last night, It was fucking amazing, they play the old stuff just as hard as they used too. and the new stuff is much better live. its just the new stuff is them growing up, getting more mature, and more meaning to their lyrics, as much as I like the old stuff about just being young and pissing on the world
Fuck you man, they played a free show in Orlando two years ago in some shithole warehouse with guys swinging from the rafters and sweatin' bleedin kids everywhere. They still rad as shit!
I also love how personal this gig is, its how punk should be, no divides or social barriers. Obviously they had a right to sign to sire, its their choice. I just hate seeing a band play to a massive mainstream audience, no real interaction, just sterile, mediocre shit. Wheres the passion gone, thats what matters most? without that its basically fucked.
This is totally how an against me show should be, gnarly and raw- everyone screaming till they cough up blood. I love how everyone is involved. Then again in my eyes there is not much space in this world for such hypocrites, still, this band changed my life.
i agree with keeger75 watch their documentary they said numerous times theyd never sell out. they were dissing bands who rode up in semi trucks and who were signed to big label records.
"Oh booohooohooo... I knew this band when they were little and cool and that's why I was cool. Now everybody knows them and that's not cool anymore... " Oh come on you stuck up little wannabepunk-elite-show-offs...
Just tell me, so I know for the future: How many people are allowed to come to see your shows and buy your records before you are not a true underground punk rocker anymore?
""stop... trying to ruin one of the best current bands ever by saying they sold out """ sounds like they did it to themselves. they dont need our help to point out the choices they made. making pop song for the masses??? the reaction is obviousand predictable. Im sure they saw it coming...yet they still chose to go down that road.
I understand that times change, but their new music definetley lacks something that their old material had. Something very special that really meant a lot to their fans. That is why their shows used to be like this. That is why some people feel very negative towards what they are today.
Times change. Would you rather stay poor for the rest of your life to make 500 people happy, or be able to make money doing things you love and bring in 100,000 new fans even if it's at the cost of the original 500, who "don't like" your new direction? They became successful. If you don't like that, you can go ahead and live off extra buns at fast food places and squat in abandoned apartment buildings.
""We want a band that plays loud and hard every night
That doesn't care how many people are counted at the door
That would travel one million miles and ask for nothing more than a plate of food and a place to rest...."" they traded in the 500 fans who would travel with them the one million miles for those 100,000 who care to listen to them at their convenience....
Aren't you just a condescending moralist? Mr. Fucking Punk Rock Ethic... Shut your trap you ignorant shit. How about you try living that lifestyle, scrounging through your days, and paying your dues? Maybe you'd feel differently about it all when you have a family to feed and an opportunity to travel the world doing what you love. You clownshoes ignoramus motherfucker.
""Maybe you'd feel differently about it all when you have a family to feed...."" You think that their family appreciates being used as an excuse to explain their hypocricy?? Note, family/kids/fans tend to respect those individuals who actually stand by their convictions in spite of dire circumstances...but hey, with apologists like yourself rooting for them, Im sure AM! can forget about all those inconvenient thoughts and will be the world famous pop stars they always dreamed about.
first of all how are they sellouts. they did a fucking unannounced basement show in orlando just recently. i dont hear them playing on the radio. i dont see people who obviously dont like punk at all liking against me. stop fucking trying to ruin one of the best current bands ever by saying they sold out
I will answer that. First of all they are on UNIVERSAL RECORDS! Secondly, they play huge arena shows with mainstream bands. Third they said in many interviews that they would never go with a major label. Fourth they play shitty fucking mainstream music now. Fifth i dont know where youre from but im from buttfuck canada and they are on the radio alot. Finally i see oh SO MANY PEOPLE who like them who of no interest in punk rock.
"If she wants to dance and drink all night." Fucking joke
cooljayhu.. i feel them chills to man, i keep replaying this and its how shows should be dude!!! this is the best in the fucking world! i love it when i see shows like this... fuck! i need another show in my basement
yeah, i know the only time I have seen them live is when they were opening for the foo fighters but it was a big arena show and most of the people (to be honest at the time including myself) had almost no idea who AM! was so it wasn't quite this crazy. They still rocked though and honestly were better than the foos
I lived in Gainesville during the years when they came on the radar screen. Great shows.
As for the "sell out" crap - I've never met a more judgmental and exclusionary group of people than Gainesville hipsters (yeah, that's right, hipsters). Seriously, ever notice how the "different" people are all the same?
If someone, through talent, perseverance, and luck, has the chance to see the world, live a dream, and secure a future for themselves/ families, who are you to judge?
They should have stayed with Plan-it-x records :/ I wanted to burn all the vinyl I had from them when they switched. I will never buy any more of their albums for the sole reasons that it's not punk anymore. It's some catchy shit music you hear on the radio :/
I bet you almost everyone who was at that show hates them now. I dont blame AM for giving in to Sire but whats sad is that they abandoned their old fans. I dont think its something that anyone wants to do and you can tell that they definitely werent happy about it. I just miss this, when it was really still, just about the music.
YOU SIR ARE THE BIGGEST DUMBASS IN THE WORLD OF .. FUCKING ANYTHING. YOUR IDIOCY FUCKING STUNNED ME SO MUCH I DIDN'T REMEMBER WTF I WAS TALKING ABOUT. They ARE being recognized; but the people who are bashing them are the true fans who have found them and been there since the get go. People who listen to good punk. not shitty sell out trash.
You my friend, are the biggest dumbass. Their is only so much you can do for yourself. Working minimum wage jobs to afford a single tour. Their label support is good for them, their new cd's show progression and an ability to write a song and grow as a group/person. Retard.
You're an idiot. The basic concept of Against Me!'s success is simple. A bunch of poor kids growing up and playing good music. 2001 comes around and they have a lineup of guys who make one of the best punk bands of our generation (or ever if you ask me). Then they come out with an a few EP's... Fat Wreck signs them and their
fan base grows. Sire comes into the picture and Against Me! signs to their label (this took about 2 years because so many label's wanted them but the members didn't want to all the BS that comes with signing to a label). Sire signs them and they agree to let AM do whatever they want on the album.
Everyone who criticizes them for changing their sound and style has to realize that as bands grow older, they change their sound. They sing about things that are relevant AT THAT TIME to them.
i love this song.... is this the first against me ppl or the newer one? there was originly 3 people in AM! but now theres different ppl. is this the newer crew?
the very very origanal was tom playing actoustic guitar and yelling about anarchy.
they keep selling out but somehow i can't leave them. there's just somthing special about them. they can do whatever they want and i guess fans will stick with them.
im from florida, have it tattooed on my arm. that band speaks volumes to me and all of my friends. iv met the band in gainsville. they could do a colaboration with britney spears and i would blair it from my radio. ever notice how you can never hear the band at thier shows? cause every fan there knows all the lyrics and screams them along. but yeah, the earlier stuff was better. people say they sold out, but i would never sell out on them.
i am not talking about their sound i am talking about how they were against corporate networking of music and wanted a DIY band. now you can hear them on the radio and they have been on TV like 10 times.
they are no the against me! they started out to be in florida.
i could care less about what style of music they play, but care morpe about how they send it to their fans.

You clownshoes ignoramus motherfucker.
sickatheart 2 years ago 5
""Maybe you'd feel differently about it all when you have a family to feed...."" You think that their family appreciates being used as an excuse to explain their hypocricy?? Note, family/kids/fans tend to respect those individuals who actually stand by their convictions in spite of dire circumstances...but hey, with apologists like yourself rooting for them, Im sure AM! can forget about all those inconvenient thoughts and will be the world famous pop stars they always dreamed about.

first of all how are they sellouts. they did a fucking unannounced basement show in orlando just recently. i dont hear them playing on the radio. i dont see people who obviously dont like punk at all liking against me. stop fucking trying to ruin one of the best current bands ever by saying they sold out
101475jd 2 years ago
I will answer that. First of all they are on UNIVERSAL RECORDS! Secondly, they play huge arena shows with mainstream bands. Third they said in many interviews that they would never go with a major label. Fourth they play shitty fucking mainstream music now. Fifth i dont know where youre from but im from buttfuck canada and they are on the radio alot. Finally i see oh SO MANY PEOPLE who like them who of no interest in punk rock.

the4eyedbee 2 years ago 5
yeah, i know the only time I have seen them live is when they were opening for the foo fighters but it was a big arena show and most of the people (to be honest at the time including myself) had almost no idea who AM! was so it wasn't quite this crazy. They still rocked though and honestly were better than the foos
cooljayhu 2 years ago 2
my band will play in your basement. we'll play in anyones basement really. just send me a message

Are they playing in a parking lot? God this is badass...I want to know where this place is and live there? Is it in Gainesville?
theaethertree 3 years ago 3
i'd pay so much to have been there
skarchieporn 3 years ago
As posted elsewhere:

It's some catchy shit music you hear on the radio :/

rambleonrose93 2 years ago
No they aren't, FAT are just releasing the original version of Eternal Cowboy. They are still on Sire for another record.
mintymintyminty 2 years ago
i just realized that after i posted it damn
rambleonrose93 2 years ago

BennG157 3 years ago
You my friend, are the biggest dumbass. Their is only so much you can do for yourself. Working minimum wage jobs to afford a single tour. Their label support is good for them, their new cd's show progression and an ability to write a song and grow as a group/person. Retard.
tynanfrombc 3 years ago 5
Im sure your one of those guys whose been there since the get go, I bet you hadnt even heard of them till CLarity came out.

why the fuck are people getting mad at them?!?! they finally get the recognition they've worked for for like, 7 years!!

fucking radio playin, jimmy kimmel fucking asshole sell outs.
thanks for the lies AM!

100% truth.
MeccaJebus 3 years ago
You're an idiot. The basic concept of Against Me!'s success is simple. A bunch of poor kids growing up and playing good music. 2001 comes around and they have a lineup of guys who make one of the best punk bands of our generation (or ever if you ask me). Then they come out with an a few EP's... Fat Wreck signs them and their
iamchris318 3 years ago 5
fan base grows.
They sing about things that are relevant AT THAT TIME to them.
iamchris318 3 years ago 7
Would we really want the bouncing souls to still be singing about throwing toilet's off of houses???
Change is not a band thing. They are still a great band.
iamchris318 3 years ago 3
newer. you can see andrew in the middle. the very original was tom and kevin
knatethatskates 3 years ago
i love this song.... is this the first against me ppl or the newer one? there was originly 3 people in AM! but now theres different ppl. is this the newer crew?
ktmyamaha01 3 years ago
the very very origanal was tom playing actoustic guitar and yelling about anarchy.
they keep selling out but somehow i can't leave them. there's just somthing special about them. they can do whatever they want and i guess fans will stick with them.

im from florida, have it tattooed on my arm. that band speaks volumes to me and all of my friends. iv met the band in gainsville. they could do a colaboration with britney spears and i would blair it from my radio. ever notice how you can never hear the band at thier shows? cause every fan there knows all the lyrics and screams them along. but yeah, the earlier stuff was better. people say they sold out, but i would never sell out on them.
jordaniscool22222 3 years ago
you're right. they just so happen to always be doing the right thing. i love them and how they make me feel.

idk what to say. obviously i love them but it's like i don't know which way they will turn next. i keep giving them second chances.
fakepoetry 3 years ago
i am not talking about their sound i am talking about how they were against corporate networking of music and wanted a DIY band. now you can hear them on the radio and they have been on TV like 10 times.
they are no the against me! they started out to be in florida.
i could care less about what style of music they play, but care morpe about how they send it to their fans.
