Hi Greg - great video and a real help as my teacher cant gliss!!
I was hoping you can answe a few questions as I'm really unclear about some things.
Can you gliss as well between notes that involve using side keys e.g Middle register G to C, C to B flat etc? What is the range - can you gliss on the bottom E for example all the way up?
It appears on Rhapsofy in blue that the gliss doesn't really kick in until it gets to the middle register where you do the slide think with fingers.
0.0 Woah. I think I'm going to practice long tones like you suggested to the person somewhere below me, because I'm jealous of your sound. AND because I think I suck extra bad, I'm going to talk to my instructor and get the nice mouthpiece he has in stock....ANNNND I shall try to gliss in my spare time.
i can do a G to C gliss. i have a question. How do you go from D to G because the fingers dont really come off the keys and the silver rings stay down on the right hand? also, i can sometimes get a D to G gliss, but then the sound stops for a few seconds due to the transition between the right and left hand. How can i fix this?

Once again a great musician that was the perfect student to learn the instrument,BUT...as a teacher I was lost at the 1 minute mark. If I understood all you said I wouldn't need to wacth the video. Comprende` SVP .
I've always wondered how this was done, ever since i heard Rhapsody in Blues...I recently figured this out on my own, and this just helped me understand just what the heck i was doing. Thanks man! helped a lot, now i can impress the crap out of my Honor Band Teacher!
Is it just me or is that clarinet "reversed" as to what normal clarinets are? His right hand is on top and left hand on the bottom.
I just didn't realize they made them like that, I had a student who insisted on putting the hands like that on a regular clarinet, I guess he should have had one of those.
LONG TONES! They may be boring to practice at first, however they are essential to learning any wind instrument. Beginning players should practice long tones 15-30 minutes a day!!
For the tone, find as many clarinet players as you can and LISTEN to the ALL the time. Many young players don't listen to the music they play. LISTEN, your own voice will emerge from imitating many different players and styles, they more players you check out, well, the more unique your sound!
ive been playing clarinet for a while know and just recently decided to switch it up and get into jazz after a year of playing alto sax, your stuff has been extremely helpful to me thank u and dont stop making vids!
i tried these methods and i had a problem. I can to the gliss from a to c, but when i try to slide my finger off the g hole, the sound squeks, jumps an octave, or even goes away. What am i doing wrong?
its hard to say without seeing exactly what you are doing... When glissing from a G often times your pointer finger will slip off the tone hole causing you to play a high E.
I would suggest that you VERY SLOWLY run through both exersices I played. Instead of glissing from G to C. Play G to A in quarter notes very slowly. If you can do that, Try glissing from G to A... If you can play G to A in quarter notes, you will be able to gliss.
i have an arrangement of Gershwin's Ain't Necessarily So for grade 8 with this in and it's soo hard thanks for the video!

good lesson plus I like few comments which need to be considered by me as clarinetist. Thanks

Is it not a combination of both jaw change and tongue change? I've always heard change of tongue position is important for glissing.

Good playing! I only get puzzeled in combining the jaw dropping and finger slide technique. Any tips on this?

Is it just me or is it ironic that when he says "dropping the fingers" he picks his nose? :)
