just was wondering in reading about the lee load master i cant find out where the spent primers go and how they not mess with the turret .....looking to get one for 45 and 223 any tricks to help loading
i reload my used brass, i use CCI small rifle primers #400, hornady V-max 55g, and use varget powder. No problems yet and im shooting 1/2" groups at 300 meters. just take the time to measure your loads, make sure your primer pockets are uniform and your case lengths are identical and you will produce highly accurate ammo.
What are good dies for the AR 15? I've heard different things. Some like the Lee Pacesetter dies better than the Lee Deluxe. Is that right? What other dies are necessary that don't come with the Pacesetter set?
I've also heard that small base dies aren't necessary for 99% of the ARs out there. Any problems with using CCI small rifle primers (#400)? I've heard some say that they only use certain primers for ARs. Anyone know of really good deals on .223 bullets?
When going from pistol to rifles reloading did you have to change out the shell plate? I have the same press as you do and the only reason I ask is when changing from either 9mm or 40 cal fits the same shell plate and primmer tray. But needs to be changed when going to say .45 cal both primmer feeder and shell plate need to be changed out. I'm wanting to get into reloading rifle rounds but not real sure what needs to be changed if at all? I'm wanting to reload 223 270 and 308 rounds. I know
Exactly how much work was done on the brass before you got to the progressive reloading stage? You mention cleaned and lubed, but did you have to do the entire trim/deburring/sizing progress before the progressive press or does your "sizing die" actually eliminate that step? I'm really interested in a progressive press but I'm wondering if it's as simple of a process as all the vids imply or whether you still need to do tons of work on each case individually before you get to the press.
@jasauve sorry for the hijack-how much you prep the brass (e.g., trim, debur, chamfer) is up to you and based on condition of brass. At a bare minimum, checking the brass for in spec length will keep you from jamming up dies or causing chambering problems.
@txstang84 Thanks! I just never see the brass trimming/deburing/chamfering mentioned in the progressive videos and so I was wondering if the sizing die was enough for any brass in decent shape. Seems progressive can save you lots of work, but it doesn't really get you away from handling each brass a few times. Thanks again!
@jasauve A progressive press set up correctly will save you a ton of ram swinging, but you have to pay close attention to everything that's going on. Rifle brass sometimes needs trimming after firing-some less than others due to manufacturing differences, hence the need to at least measure. Happy reloading!
@txstang84 just thought of another variable-RCBS makes a die called an "X-Die". I have one in 30-06 and when properly prepped, it's supposed to greatly reduce or eliminate the need to trim your brass each time. I haven't been using it because I still have to full length size anyway (according to the instructions), so I don't really know if it works as advertised, but the principle makes a little sense.
Yes, that way I wrote lube and not wax. Well the problem have to be in the cases. Little lube it stick, too much and the lube leave marks on the neck of the case.
Nevermind, one more step of case prep before reload for me.
@Rastislav110 ah..well, that's still kinda weird. I've used RCBS silicone (too messy IMO), Dillon spray lube, and Hornady Unique. All of those have allowed me to never stick a case. I've only done it once...and that was due to lack of lube (guess I missed one). I also experimented with tea candles when my Dillon spray lube decided to leak out...that worked well too...just rubbed the candle up and down the cartridge and evened out with my finger-glided through the dies like butter.
It seems to me, that the brass was resized before the video was taken. I have the same Lee sizing die and from time to time (every 10th) the case stuck in it being ready to be punch away.
Hi Gav, I have a ar15 chambered to .223 only, can I reload 5.56mm nato brass in a .223 die safely, I was thinking of using RCBS small base dies for this, thanks
@RHECHWLYB1 - That's a tricky one. You can size it to get it to chamber, but if you use .223 load data for 5.56 brass, that's not safe due to differences in case volume. It may be worth more research.
@gavintoobe what die are you using with the powder measure? i looked for the powder through expanding die but cant find one at lee. can you help me on where to find one?
@gavintoobe If anything its safer, The military brass can handle more cup pressure, it has a thicker wall, and base. It is 100% safe to use .223 loads in 5.56 brass, as well as .223 brass. It would not be wise however to use 5.56 load data in .223 brass, That is if you somehow found NATO load data.
@RHECHWLYB1 ...from a very unscientific perspecitive, and as Gavin says, "worth more research", I shoot 5.56 NATO brass (LC) all the time in 223 chambers. The weight/thickness diff in brass is relatively negiligible. I have some PPU 223 brass that weighs in at more than LC NATO brass. The bigger difference between the two is leade dimension. In short, reload to 223 powder/COL specs, and start at the low end, work up slowly and watch for pressure signs.
@RHECHWLYB1 Yes you can use military brass for your need mil brass is thicker but that is taken care when u full length size, what actually makes it 5.56 is more pressure 5.56 loaded to just over 62000 lbs/psi where 223 is 55000 lbs/psi overall length is 2.26 inches on both any longer will not fit in ar mag, u will probably have to trim most cases though, just don't drop more powder than recommended for 223 and u will be fine
Great video. With regard to rifle brass, how do you deal with case prep when loading on a progressive press? Now I size/deprime, tumble, trim, prime, charge, seat and crimp. Do I have to do all the case prep stuff in single-stage mode first? Seems like that would defeat the purpose of a progressive press. Appreciate any advice. Also, any opinion of Lee Pro 1000 vs. Loadmaster. Thanks!
Isn't there any other way to accomplish this in station two without full length sizing twice? I am new to this press and would appreciate help on this one.
@msharpashotr >>> it not just to get the casing centered, the RCBS competition die allows you to drop the bullet dead center nto the die without you having to hold it on top of the case/brass ...it works for me, it lets me seat bullets faster. Just a thought
i would get the RCBS comp seating die on your setup, you get to drop the bullet drown the chamber instead of having to propping the bullet on top of the casing. It will make the operation go faster. Good Vid
If your choice was just one progressive press between a lee or hornady on a budget but still putting quality above all else, which would you pick? I'm in the market for a press.
Hey are you lubing the brass before running them thru the depriming? If so how are you lubing? Right now I us synthetic motor oil and it works fine for me but it is a single step process and then I tumble in media to get the oil off. So what do you do?
No problems using Federal primers? I've heard of and saw pictures of some KABOOMS using Federal's and Lee products. I've load thousands of rounds using them and never had a problem myself.
Great videos. You have awesome instructional videos. I appreciate all the effort and the expense you put into all your videos. I wish I could keep my reloading bench as neat a tidy :). For those of you who ask about the LoadMaster, it's a great press. Those who complain or have nothing good to say probably have never tried the Loadmaster. The other reloading manufactures all have their problems, nothing is perfect. I produce great ammo at a fraction of the price of other reloading presses.
I also had the prob with every now and then a round would fly out and on to the ground .A idea i will pass on to you , What i did was get a peice of plastic and pop riveted it to the front of the case collector . I havent had a prob since ( Ps i made it to the hight of the back and sides ) No more round's going on the floor
Hi Gavin great video as always. Do you think there is enough room on the turret to mount a Hornady Lock And Load powder dispenser? I find it difficult to adjust the Lee powder systems and prefer the Hornady. Thanks!
Very good vid! I can't wait to get myself an AR-15 so I can start loading .223, but how do you like the Lee Loadmaster because every site I go to has every bad reviews for it? Thanks!
