  • july 2nd 2009!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11 Mile one Centre St.Johns Newfoundland Canada! gonna be a kick ass show!!!!

  • just got back from that show, twas fucking insane

  • it was excellent.

  • This was the song that really got me into The Hip, now I can't get enough!

  • Yer not even close.

  • haha hybrid....

  • Awee,,, He just wanted to be friends, ^^

  • I've wondered, and i think its very probable that i could be right on this...it seems, as tragically hip is canadian and all, and we are closest to the global warming issue...this song, especially combined with the music vid, seems to reflect the impact of global warming on the polar bears, and that they are running out of ice and will soon live on the land much more, and eventually die off...it's rather sad to think about, their magnificient creatures, hope it never comes to that...

  • The northern cap is said to be shrinking but southern growing more than double. So, it begs the question, where is Al Gore? I live in GA USA and has snow last week. Al, buy a fuckin' hat. For those who don't know, 1 of his houses, south of nashville - gas driveway lamps - $1000 / mo.

Love Thip - fan since album 1. But like REM, once Samson loses the hair, goes the skills. Whattup?

  • As to what I just added, lyrics to the Dark One are strong to match the music - new for Thip.

Please understand i've been all through CND and find it fantastic! Folks are great 'cept maybe Montreal but I guess why. City is beautiful thought, Want to see Toronto. Been up through BC, NWT, SK, crossed the plains from Regina to Medicine Hat on Rte. 1. For a yank, not too bad. You are our brothers next door and it should be recognized.

  • I think it might be about global warming.

Gord was driving a hyrbid lol =)

  • this song was always on one of my top favorites when it came to tragically hip!

  • Tom Petty guitar liks. Ubercool.

  • 4 all u h8rs aganst CANADA if u r american u can listen 2 american woman by the guess who while floating in Buntzen Lake

  • Three Days Grace??? hahaha Three Days Gay is more like that. Top 40, sludge, mediocre garbage.

  • "The suck balls and i am canadian fucker." Great english buddy. You have got to be kidding on the three days grace thing...either that or you ride the short bus twice every day.

Yeah whatever is brutal. Gothic metal is "so hardcore"...self indulgent shit with gay undertones...just what everyone loves

  • thats because polar bears only exist in the north pole so by saying only in Canada will you be chased by one is stating the obvious

  • Who calls it 'The Hip'? Its Tragic.

  • they're 'the hip'. so you say stuff like, "hey have you heard tragic's new album?" LOL WTF?!....

just call them the hip plzkthxbai.

  • Almost every fan of the Hip call them the Hip...

  • Only in Canada will you be chased by a polar bear.

    Got to love the Hip.

  • the feeling as described:. when i listen to the hip.. its like death is honored and understood. simultaneously life is beautiful and makes me want to express the fact that we really only do have one life. live it to the fullest, dont hide your love, passions. take care all

  • It may be about global warming, but the slap of irony hits early as Gord's Prius breaks down...

  • Man I love these guys, and Canada I would live no where else! We have such great music for the few number of widely known bands. The Hip are here to stay!

  • it deals with global warming and our abuse of the planet ..

sings about how we take all the clean water because its not the ocean - "up to my toes" = weak and harmless, and "you are just a lake, made to take and take and take" ..

and the polar bear represents how eliminating the polar caps effects us, and no matter how much we try to avoid it, we cant escape it

  • we can escape it but its not going to happen

  • Melting ice cubes at the end of the video and a confused polar bear. Global warming? Why it's in this video, I don't know.

  • this is buntzen lake aka my back yard, never seen any albino bears there though...or gord downy

  • I Think it's a metaphor for a latent meth addiction

  • word

  • It's not a polar bear, anyone ever see that documentary on BCs albino bears? That's what it's all about.

  • why didnt he just get back into the car ? lol

  • because it wasnt in the script... dont ever question mr downey

  • WORD!

  • i luv the maritimes ...new brunswick the beautiful...east coast is great if u know it..:)

  • Oh YEAH!! I'm from PEI man you gotta love it!!

  • I love New brunswick too, i have lived here all my life=)

  • I don't know what the Polar bear significance is...

anyone know? (yes I am metaphorically challenged).

  • great song!!!

  • Is this Buntzen lake?

It looks like any other lake here in BC.

    I love living here...

I'll never go back to the Prairies

  • How come? It's not all Praries here!

  • Dude, I grew up in a small town south of Winnipeg.

Left at 17 to study in Thunder Bay. Montreal, Vancouver, and then up into Northern BC.

Way better on the west coast, no cold, no block heater required, ocean, mountains, need I continue?

  • What the hell is it with the Hip and polar Bears?

  • cause they're cool like that...

  • Canada = paradise.

  • I believe so, too. I complain about the winters but then I look out my window and the beauty of the ice and snow take my breath away. The area where this was shot is especially nice.

  • I've actually been through the area this video is recorded in and it is beautiful. On another note, this song reminds me of my boss. And I think she knows my You Tube sign-in. Oh well.

  • mhm?

  • SIMPLY THE SHIT!

  • THE BEST BAND EVER PERIOD!

  • nabokov... damn these guys are so unlike musicians from america... They're educated..

I didn't think it was possible to have a band that could think. Nice song on love. =] cheers to the tragically hip.

  • well its not the ocean then you numpty

  • Does anyone know where this was shot?

  • Most of it is short near Buntzen Lake near Vancouver, BC (the shed-like structure was also used for the movie "Lake Placid" among other things)

  • Thanks, lithohedron,

I used to swim at Sasamat Lake in Belcarra Regional Park, very close to Buntzen Lake, but I never made it to Buntzen Lake at all My bad I thought White Pine Beach at Sasamat was so nice, I kept going there instead. I think Ill check out Buntzen Lake the next time Im in the Lower Mainland (and when I do, you can bet I'll be thinking of this song!).

    Cheers!

  • This sucks as well. The Hip do not need to be commercial, what ever that means. The old record companies have destroyed more great bands than I can count trying to make them fit some business model for "commercial music" that does not fit the band. It cuts off the bands followers.

  • I would love to have him for a night..he's freakin so sexy...

  • I like this song. Too bad the album stinks.

  • i wonder what message this video could be sending us

  • Prius's suck is the message

  • he kinda sounds like Stipe

  • Gord Downie and Michael Stipe are of a dying breed: frontmen who you wouldn't think could sing but they really can. They're always the jewels of all frontmen to listen to.

  • I love polar bears! and the hip too!

  • My teacher edited this video.

  • go canada! lol, good song. 5/5

  • song is amazing, canada rocks!

  • hey! i've been on that bridge hes running on!

  • This kicks ass....

  • fuck good song i seen this up at pemberton fest live and it was unbelievible

  • polar bears fuckin rock!

  • yes, when u doubt a videos potential add polar bears.

  • Hmmmmm. He should run into Grandaddy while he's out there in the woods.

  • five stars for the opening quote.

  • fuck iam so proud to be canadian,we have the best bands out here in canada.hip rules.happy canada day everyone.

  • beautiful music video

  • I could never understands why everyone uses success in the US as the yard stick by which they measure Canadian bands. They're the one who elected Bush... twice! Why do we put so much stock in their collective judgement?

The Hip ROCK because WE say they do! who cares what americans think!

  • Oh, come now. Don't tar us all with the same brush. Not all of us stupid Americans voted for Bush once, let alone twice. And if I recollect, both of those elections were rather debatable. The Hip rocks. I've been a fan for years as. And I was born and raised south of the border, as are many of their fans. Lighten up! Enjoy the music!

  • youd understand if you were canadian

  • i agree

    lighten up!

while it IS true that the Hip are iconic in a way that only Canadians truly understand--great music is great music

to quote another Canuck ( Jane Siberry )

    " no borders here "

  • this is such a good song i wanna learn it

  • i am loving it..

  • and take and take and take....your not even close.(ouch)

  • canadian bands are amazing

    the hip rule

  • Hey nigga dont dis canucks you peice of crap

  • thanks for defending us buddy

  • damn

    they STILL got it

the stones were played out after 20 years

    the 70's dino-rockers are relics

the Hip still sound like next year's model

  • i ♥ u!!!!!!

  • i use to baby sit gords kids

  • hip is awsome even after all the years

dont like it? go fuck your self eh

  • make that 5 to 1, and being an AMERICAN musician myself, I have always looked up to the hip as an inspiration. So on behalf of myself, many other americans, and a mother shitload of canucks..... earthsystem03, you can go fuck yourself.

  • hear, hear pounanni. hear, hear!

  • thers no rules for being a fkg musician,

  • no degree needed

  • Hmmm, looks like 3 to 1 Hip fans earthsystem03. Wait, 4 counting me. And trust me my friend, I am no music slouch. I have studies the theory front to back in school, and I know what is difficult as well as what is creative and combinations of the two. Wasn't a Hip fan myself as a child, but now that I understand them more, and have seen them play live, they are good musicians.

  • earthsystem03 knocking the hip again, please respond to the message I left in your inbox. You're a joke buddy, do you realize the magnitude of the tour they just had in the US....They may not be as popular as some other bands but they have a strong fanbase. I believe it is you that is the chump who knows fuck all about music.

  • earthsystem03-"I think they have spirit but are not true musicians, because I doubt that they have ever been castigated for being shy, as kids, since they are way into hockey" so you have to shy to be a musician, i think ur venting ur own problems on them its quite obvious, i dont like this shit cause its not heavy enough for me but its cool for the ppl who do just not me and i would say thur as good as Lamb of God which i listen too just not my cup of methamphetamines.

  • Do you think the Hip really care if they make it anywhere, they are having a good time in this life and thats probably a lot better than most of us, take it for what it is, as for you earthsystem03, tell me what constitutes a "true musician"?

  • lol, that's just one of the dumbest comments I've read on here. enough said

  • i agree

  • You know every hip fan. .. and none of them know about music, thats a sweet stat u should publish it.

  • venamoney, that's seriously the best youtube comment I've ever read. Cheers!

    :)

  • I'd have to say Canadians have way better musicians than the americans. Although the americans do have good ones, Canada has way better. I would rather listen to a Canadian band anyday. The music comes right from the heart and it has not a single thing to do with Hockey.

  • The Hip will never make it in the states all our radio stations are owned by a few companies unless its corperate rock promoted by THE MAN it doesn't have a chance, besides theres a possibility that success here would ruin them

  • is that gus's cousin?

  • I think that I understand the problem, when I was younger I couldn't stand the Hip and found it unthinkable that anyone could. I believe that the Hip requires a little persistence, once you listen a few times you love it and can't get enough. For Canadians it's easy to listen to them because they have many references to Canadiana, ie the video for Darkest One. That Canadiana is what draws us to them and it is what many Canadian Bands and Singers are lacking.

  • i got soo baked in that little shack. this video was filmed 5 minuites away from my house

  • This wasn't five minutes from where I live, but five minutes from where my sister lives. What a great song and a blessing for Canadian music.

  • Gord, I think I almost luv ya.

  • The best song from World Container.

  • All hail The Hip! Gord Downey is my favorite freak! You gotta see these guys live!

  • ye they are good live

i saw them a while ago in Barrie, Ont

  • Search for "A Museum After Dark", it's the one stop reference shop for all things TRAGICALLY HIP

  • I friggin LOVE this video!!!!

  • this is a great song but the video is kind of pointless. gord is such a goofball live.

  • I wonder if the was Gus, the polar bear from Central Park, :P

  • bear reminds me of my 7yr old white sheppard Ozzy

  • i don't like the Hip, but even i like this song

  • Gord your my hero.

  • haha, as he sung this live at the london astoria, i was pulling a microphone from his chest !..got to shake his hand too. ! magic.

  • Realy don't know!! But do know that i will see them on 25 Sept in Paradiso Amsterdam!! Great!!

  • whats everyones idea of the song meaning for this song?

  • He's talking to the water... a metaphor for a relationship. He's explaining that while it has power over him, it's still just a small body of water - It's not the Ocean. It's about standing up for yourself as in the case of a relationship. The song's persona has been pushed around. But he is still just talking to the water. It's not clear or not whether he has had said this to the person. - Ryan of the RSL Weblog

  • SCKB76: Tell your friend that you won't be his friend anymore unless he hooks you up w/ tickets and backstage passes and stuff...dude you really have to take advantage of this situation..haha. Seriously though, it would be sweet to meet ole Gord.

  • Good that there are at least a couple good Canadian bands...
