my opinion may be a minority one, but the 3rd Doctor has always been my favorite of all of the Doctors. i think Jon Pertwee brought the right mix of authority, wisdom and action to the role -- he was witty instead of silly (sorry, but it took me a while to warm up to Tom Baker b/c i thought he was too over-the-top at times) and had the strongest sense of right-and-wrong (and least willingness to tolerate mendacity and incompetence) of any of the Doctors.
Oh the poor Doctor...always flummoxed and flustered when it comes to awkward social moments, like when one of his companions gets proposed to out of the blue.
Finally. I mean, I know it's supposed to be bittersweet and all, but Good Lord! She's been shipped with every other male character on her run. Anyone else feel the same?
Jon Pertwee & Katy Manning were a great team on "Doctor Who". The Third Doctor and Jo Grant had a wonderful onscreen chemistry which was reflected in real life since both actors stated how much they enjoyed working together
It was nice that Russell T Davies brought Jo back for "The Sarah Jane Adventures" in 2010 as we viewers not only got to see her once more, but found out what she had been up to in the years since she parted company with the Time Lord himself
Some complained that Jo was a sceamer, but she had her share of fight scenes as well. That helps in making her third, maybe second, to her sucessor(haven't seen enough of the last two Doctors to be sure).
At first the Doctor didn't like her but then he grew to love her as a very special friend and I think us fans did too and she came back to us recently which was good
@Bladerunner93 Oh i loved this weeks SJA , it's now my no.1 favorite of the CBBC Series , i could have cried with joy seeing all them flashbacks and having Sarah mention the names of old companions like Ian and Barbra . Such a joy to see Jo again , i hope she will appear in future stories of either SJA or Doctor Who itself , maybe even have her cool Grandson as a future Doctor Who Companion perhaps .
@doctorwhoone I loved it too. When I saw the flashbacks, I was kind of hoping that the memory weave would create the 3rd Doctor, since it was going to create the TARDIS key
@Bladerunner93 It should have created the Tardis Key as the one used by the 3rd , 4th and 8th Doctors rather then the oridinary House Key used in the new series of Doctor Who .
Im wearing a replica of the Tardis Key as worn by the 3rd , 4th and 8th Doctors as i type this comment , you can see it on my old Review here on YouTube of the Dapol Timelords Set . Ive had it for about 5 or 6 years now , wear it round me neck every single day , true whovian me = )
@MilliwaysCarPark she knew of him before the story as he was a die hard environmentalist who got in lots of papers which she read up on. but she only knew him for the length of this story. I suppose it was a few days - a week or something. not very long.
This is such a sad scene. Jo Grant is definitely my favorite companion and I really hate/love this scene. It's hard to watch, but extremely cute. You get to see just how much the Doctor cared for Jo, which is funny given that he didn't even want her as his assistant at first. Jo does get one of the best send-offs, though. It's very long and filled with a lot of sad-looks from the Doctor. Not all of the companions got such a wonderfully touching end. *Cough*Peri-Adric*cough*
That was a well done exit scene for Jo Grant. I wonder if Katy Manning's departure as well as Roger Delgado's death influenced Jon Pertwee to quit Doctor Who after the following season.
I got to meet John Pertwee when he was making this episode in Wales, way back in the early seventies when I was just a little kid. What ever happened to the Doctor's car - is it still in existance??
WOO HOO! Jo grant is coming back! She'll be in the new season four of the sarah jane smith series starring alongside Matt Smith! I cannot wait to see how the doctor reacts to seeing jo grant again. I always felt like her leaving was a big heart ache for him.
@dcmcshan Never mind that, I can't wait to see how Sarah reacts to her! Meh, she's probably not going to be that jealous (like with Rose), but that has to be the team up of LEGENDS!
...and it all ends with the Doctor climbing into that old, reliable car that he loves (which, in another universe that exists only off camera, was a temperamental piece of junk that Joh Pertwee hated with a vengeance) and riding off.
Did the Doctor ever come back to visit Jo? (For that matter, did he ever keep his promise to come back and see his granddaughter, Barbara Foreman?)
One of the most poignant farewell scenes in the history of the program. Puts to shame all the soppy, overblown nonsense we've had from Russel T. Davies.
@Southblaine Funny you should say that... since she is! Katy Manning is appearing on the Sarah Jane Adventures as Jo Grant this year along with Matt Smith's Doctor; it's been confirmed by the BBC.
I remember seeing this for the first time several years ago when the DVD was released and getting pretty choked up unexpectedly. I rewatched it with the commentary by Katy Manning, Barry Letts and Terrance Dicks and got choked up all over again as they all stopped speaking the moment Jon Pertwee left the house and at some point, Katy began to cry. For all the wonkiness of the old series, there are some amazingly well acted scenes, this being high among them.
What a beautifully played out scene. As its so easy to descend into the mawkish, "Goodbyes" require a deft touch by all concerned. Witness some of the more cringe-making exits in the new series for proof of this.
this is a lovely scene but moveing and sad but wonderfully acted out. john and tom are my 2 main fav doctors. thanks for posting this scene 5 stars i just love doctor who.
A sad ending to the Doctor Who story Green Death, sad to see Jo Grant leave. The Doctor is very saddened that she will not be returning to UNIT. The scene when the Doctor slips out the door is neat, you can see a tear in his eye, seeing the Doctor driving off in Bessie in this scene is him all alone again till he meets Sarah Jane Smith. It is sad to see Jo Grant go, a big loss to the Doctor and a loss to UNIT.
Brilliant scene. I remember when she started out she was quite clumsy and uncertain, but this scene shows just how much the Doctor valued her in the end.
This final scene from "Green Death" does strike a sad note, being the end of the Jo Grant era.
The 70's era of DrWho is remarkable for great writing, and imaginative production, and two great Doctors in Pertwee and Baker, all of which led to a golden age of high popularity.
It is also notable for an incredible run of great companions, starting with Liz Shaw and running through Romana 2.
And for 3 seasons, Jo was one of the most fun companions.
this is probably one of the saddest goodbyes in Doctor Who and the fact The Doctor always looked at Jo as another daugher or grandaughter, probably saw a bit of Susan in Jo

RIP Jon Pertwee.

The acting was more naturalistic - less flashy than the new series and as a result has more feeling. I remember this well from the 70's
