i don't think star trek nor district 9 should be nominated, i thought transformers 2 would be nominated and also that 2012 would be nominated, too. but i wished terminator salvation would be nominated at least for best art direction or visual effects

Ok,, some points u refferring too i understand, but saying that 2012 for best visuals....noo.. its just a lot..but the difference is in the quality of the rendering process.. which makes the outcome of the image..a lot more realistic.. this is a thing 2012 doesnt have.. and transformers 2 has! and star trek too. and disctrict 9 is also little cheaper rendered... Ofc...nothing till now can't touch James Cameron Avatar. in quality and all other things.. *visually based

As far as budget, District 9 should have won. But seriously, the technology going into Avatar was more advanced.

I think Avatar was AMAZING with visual effects

but District 9 was made on such a low budget

and was still really good!

Star Trek was really good with they're background effects

Anyone who thinks Avatar shouldn't have won should have their heads examined. The movie was pretty much a lock to win every technical award at the Oscars.

Ever heard of the word "opinion"? The CGI in Avatar just look synthetic to me. There where better CGI effects 20 years ago! (Terminator 2, The Abbys and Jurassic Park)

we all know Avatar will win this category and rightfully so, but despite the incredibly realistically rendered VFX work in Avatar Im much more impressed by the creativeness of District 9. It was nice to have a reminder of good ol 80s sci-fi/action + an appropriate R-rating (loads of gore, hehe). For example; compare the mech suits in both D9 and Avatar, in D9 it looks more creepy and insectoid, in Avatar its more like a helicopter cockpit with arms and legs= both awesome but to me D9 was better

As far as these visual effects nominees go I think the best films were District 9/ Star Trek. Avatar had pretty visuals and lame story. Lame Story + Pretty Visuals= Pretty Lame. Star Trek and District 9 included strong acting and story in addition to strong visuals.

The visual effects are there to support the story? Well then, Avatar's story was one of the weekend, cliche, Hollywood formula films I'm seen in a long time. I don't believe it should win any Oscars but it made so much money that there's no way it won't. Just like that's the only reason Sandra Bullock is guaranteed to win. Disctrict 9 had a unique story and fantastic effects. I was blown away by that movie. Biggest surprise of last summer.

I'm not a big fan of CGI at all I love live action but Avatar had effects that were so good that it doesn't actually process as being fake

The technology they invented for Avatar will help it out, I really don't think Avatar could lose here, it has so much going for it
