hey, huge fan of the videos. youre a huge inspiration. could you offer me any advice on composition? i found most of the stuff i try to right starts to get bland. i use diatonic scales mostly.
@MikeandhisBass Well I'm not Jeff but there are many ways to approach composition. Don't restrict yourself to just one. I prefer a method that involves trying to play whatever I'm feeling in complete ignorance of any scales and rules - whatever it takes to get the sound that expresses me. Another way is the schooled way with scales and mathematical thinking - Tool uses a rhythm based on the Fibonacci sequence in one song. The only right method is whatever combination works best for you.
Jeff, of all the songs ive heard you play, and loving every one of them, this is my favorite moment out of every one.
your expression shows how locked into the moment you are. when i heard you hit that chord, i made the EXACT same face as you. words cant describe the feeling, but ill bet many viewers made the same face, and shared the same happiness you showed.
thanks so much for the inspiration to keep playing.
oh christ there are too many things to like about this video. Your sexy tuning allows for the most unique chord sounds of like all time. Looping pedal just makes this 1000 times better.
I really want to learn bass. I'm debating getting a fretless acoustic or electric as my first bass, but then again maybe I should just get a standard 4 string fretted squire or something? I already play 6 string guitar and I love the sound of the fretless bass, but I don't know which is the best choice.
besides, you dont learn to do the stuff jeff does.
you need to start on a 4 string and learn everything.
its not like youll find a teacher that will start teaching you playing on a fretless 6 string and on your first class youll be learning Satori by jeff schmidt.
anyway man, i wish you the best of luck. you're gonna love bass!
@TheBassMan533 Dead serious. Several years ago I saw Trip Wamsley play and when he was done, I asked him about this very issue. After asking me a few questions, he advised me that if a 6-string was where I wanted to end up, it was where I needed to start, because going the 4 to 5 to 6 route meant I was going to have to adjust to different string spacings and muting techniques each time. I won't be stupid if you don't.
@baronvonsatan When I switched to five, i used what i thought was common sense and looked up my string spacing and purchased a relativly similar spacing on a five, to not lose the dynamic control i had developed through years of practice. Anyway, it would technically be more time consuming to start on a four, knowing you want six.
@TheBassMan533 Anyway, the point I was making about banjos is that they have 4 strings and guitars have 6, but nobody gives to prospective guitarists the advice you gave to a prospective bassist. The former would probably flip you off and say he doesn't need training wheels, or something. In any case, it's possible that there are as many answers to this question as there are bassists.
you made me take the frets off my guitar. and then buy a bass, and de-fret that, too. when are you going to stop :) thanks for being a source of inspiration for young artists.
there is a lot about the bass he uses and the way he uses it. BUT the way he compose is nothing about the instrument. The composition is really creative. As I know any instrument can't make you play better
Ragazzi, secondo me tutta questa diatriba ha poco senso: un bassista è in primo luogo un musicista, e in quanto tale, fa il che gli pare, col suo strumento. Fine della storia. Meglio evitare tutto questo marasma da stadio.
That's not true at all. There are loads of bassists out there experimenting with new instruments and abilities that aren't well known or respected. Jeff stands out due to the standard of his composition.
To anyone ho thinks Jeff isn't the best bassist in the world, you really should open your eyes. He's the most imaginative bass played I've ever seen, just awesome.
He an amazing musician as well as a bassist, but I think there are players out there that is better. I think Jaco was better, Wooten, Miller and let us not forget Thunderthumps Johnson.
Do not get me wrong. Jeff is awsome. Really melodical and tight.

PUAHUAHUAHUAH nasconditi e taci.

He strings his MTD as a piccolo bass, one octave above standard tuning. I believe he uses altered tunings besides that. If you want to try it, D'Addarios makes some ultra light nickle rounds, XL280's I think.
i will drum for you man, just send me a msg, a plan and i'll pay for the plane ticket.....i have no drums :( but i assure you....very much so....you would not regret at least jamming with me in a closed setting where its all about the music....i REALLY want to scoop the musical ice cream out of your brain and put it to percussion.
My guess? He started off playing a standard 6 string, then moved to bass. No doubt this was just sick, both to watch and listen to. All I can do is drool and wish I could play like that.... That was just amazing, wasn't it?
I don't doubt that for a second, but the Stanley Jordan imitation, only on bass, is just so classic of guitarists, not really bassists. Stanley Clarke gives, to me, the best performance on bass from a guy who has always played bass. And again, I did state I was just guessing... but I still bet I'm right. :-)

Not sure about brand or gauge, but I do know he tunes EADGC (tenor tuning) and an octave up. That would probably mean similar gauges to a guitar (maybe a little thicker so they're all wound), only on a 34" scale.

d'addario piccolo strings.
low string is a .80 - high string is a .20.
