Jon looked different and sounded a bit different (probably hadn't developed his schtick), but he was 23 or 24 here. He certainly looks older than that.
OMG where did u get this? this was before VCRs. I remember channel 50, they were only on 5 hours a day, used 2nd hand equipment, & went belly up after a year. THIS IS AWESOME!!!
Thanks for posting! I watched KFTY at this time. Their signal was very strong in Concord. The newscasts were less than professional but the lack of polish made them interesting. I don't remember seeing any talent other than Stan on the air -- obviously there were others but he was the only one I remembered.
Great find, its inspiring to see Jon Miller the voice of Espn sunday night baseball, and it shows you him in a period of a bit less confidence. Great find!!
KING-TV in Seattle called its broadcasts the "KING Newservice" during the mid-'70s. It has been "KING 5 News" since the late '70s, but it shared time with "NewsCenter 5" in the early '80s.
Actually, Stan Atkinson worked over at KOVR in 1993-1995 and KCRA from 1987-1993 before retiring. Oh if you haven't noticed, as of 1/26/07 KFTY dropped all of it's newscasts completely.
Miller sounds nothing like he does now...although it's amusing to note that, even then when he was in (I assume) his 20s, his hairline was receding at an alarming rate.

Wow, Jon Miller was already starting to lose his hair at age 21.

The actual date of the Seals game appears to be 10-25-1972. The Seals (not very surprisingly, given it's the Seals) lost to Atlanta at Oakland 4-3.

Jon Miller was born in 1951, so he was 21 years old at the time this aired.

Jon Miller was born in 1951, so he was 21yo at the time. The hint is that there is an imminent peace treaty in the Vietnam War.

Jon MIller with mutton chops & hair on top of his head? You know that was a LOOONG time ago.

Awesome! I remember good ol' Stan Atkinson on KCRA 3 in the 80's.

@Nikkorasu78 Stan is my uncle's dad, so I get to see him every once in a while. He looks soooo young here!
MajestySnowbird 2 years ago
Yeah, it's crazy to see him get older over the years... Just like Dave and Lois Hart... almost family-like. :)

I met Stan Atkinson once, he was a complete and total pompous overbearing jerk off.

Check out the 2004 film "Anchorman:The Legend Of Ron Burgundy". There was mustaches galore in that film.

Stan Atkinson was at KCRA long before 1987. More like 1977. And that was his second tour- he was there in the late 50s and early 60s as well.

The "Newservice" name was also used by KNBC in the 70s. Does anybody know of any other American stations that used it?
CKCK in Regina, Canada used the name from 1976 to 1994 (though they started spelling it as two words sometime in the 80s.)
brithgob 4 years ago
KXTV in Sacramento used it in the mid 1970s before moving to the Eyewitness News title in the early 80s,and now they're known as News10.

Some history here...
Stan Atkinson became a legendary anchor in Sacramento for KCRA, and John Miller is the voice of the SF Giants and ESPN baseball. Nice find.

If the people at ESPN got a look at that tape--HOOO BOY would Joe Morgan let him have it!
