@bananeskit A true user of the English language (especially in front of millions online) should be able to use that language correctly. It's 'Gabriel's' - with an apostrophe. Idiot.
You're right of course - later stage Genesis let Banks and Rutherford develop as songwriters too, so Phil wasn't the only one changing the sound, updating it, and bringing the band into modern times (with massive radio hits - nothing wrong with that!)
@tacomadc I agree, if when you say Phil you mean Phil solo. The records that Genesis put out in the 1980s were very different from this, but they were still very much Genesis and some were as good in their own way as this was. All this "Genesis was only good with Peter Gabriel (or Steve Hackett)" or "Phil Collins ruined Genesis" gets very tiresome. The later version of Genesis was different but still good.
@tacomadc "Trick of the Tail" is as good, if not better than any Gabriel era album plus it's recorded way better, especially the drums & bass. If you have a good system it really cranks. Phil also was the drummer on the first 2 or 3 Brand X albums which are classics of the fusion genre. On the first Brand X album "Unorthodox Behaviour," Phil's drums are right in front of the mix & sound massive, like he was playing in a cave.
If you were there....you know Phil Collins never wrote a song in his life! Just ripped from Genesis time after time.....Peter Gabriel was the most talented individual i ever saw perform live! Better than Mick, better than Bowie, better than Tull, better than Zappa,He was phenomanol!!! One night, they dressed as lab techs and wheeled out a huge test tube filled with bubbling goo, it tipped over and the goo spilled onto the stage, and a hand came out of it and grabbed a mike...you rock Gabriel!LOVE

Is this the best song in rock history?I think so.When Genesis was in their prime they had is all.Outstanding vocals, songwriting and the musicianship to match any other prog band. This song is soooooo killer it still sends chills up my spine.
@Big77Jim Yes I think this is one of the greatest songs ever written. I know what you mean about the chills. I get them every single time. I don't see how someone can listen to this and not be blown away. And this version...ahhh peter's voice on this version is killing me.

@ArchieMoore one more thing,if you listen you'll find that both Peter and Phil are sharing the vocal lead on this.you'll also notice the vocal range of Phil taking over where Peter wasn't able to go.the older genesis was artsey and i like it better but they had Steve Hackett,Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford.they all had contributing upsides.
@paisleybabee i don't agree; you are expressing a normal reaction to the sight of an androgynous man, and as a matter of fact i have always seen the interplay between Gabriel and Collins on various tracks (especially on return of the Giant Hogweed) as homoerotic make of that what you will ...
@frenchexperience You don't agree that he is sexy..or that I am twisted? How about both? Gabriel and Collins...uhhhh...I enjoy their harmonies honestly but as for the rest...umm
Genesis indeed a very unique band, and they had two separate manifestations, one with Gabriel at the helm and the other with Collins. Both turned out some great music, and both Phil and Peter were good frontmen with good voices, though Peter was more flambouyant in his costumes, etc back in the early days. Carpet Crawlers was one of my early favorites, and Mama from the later years ranks right up there!!

@ArchieMoore You might want to give a good listen to the album "Trick of the Tail". The first few albums after Gabriel left the band had some great songs on them. Genesis auditioned hundreds of potential Gabriel replacements, and they ended up having their drummer become their singer. I must say, that Phil did an adequate job filling Gabriel's shoes in live performances. During the last half of the 70's, Genesis was not that different a band from the Gabriel era Genesis.
@ArchieMoore hate is such a strong word, wouldn't you say ?..Phil's work with Genesis is great, as both drummer & vocalist..he took Genesis into the 80's with artistically inclined prog rock while achieving commercial success when most bands of that genre and era couldn't !.YES seems to have done the same thing in the 80's..Gabriel's work with the band & solo is fantastic as well..i think that as people we should do our best to avoid all negativity and just appreciate great music !
@ArchieMoore I did not like Genesis for many years, than started to like and stop to like, when Phil Collins started to save money(only tour additional musicians),and doing two things in the same time(Genesis and boring solo) .I like him when playing drums and being shut up (I am very sad that he is no more available to play drums...that means he will use again drum machine and will sing forever his boring songs...).I hope he will feel soon much better.
@ArchieMoore The commercial Genesis of the 1980s was a very different band from the more artistic Genesis of the 70s (despite sharing three musicians, Collins, Rutherford and Banks). The early Genesis was more interesting, though it wasn't without some flaws of its own (sometimes too pretentious for its own good)
How many bands where influenced by Genesis?Just off the top of my head I can name lots.Kansas,Rush,Marillion,Styx,IQ,Phallas,Fish,Flower Kings,Salem Hill just to name a few.Even Yes wouldnt listen to them at the time in fear of being changed by them because of the simularity of their music.
Did you record this yourself at the concert? If that's the case I think the place you were at seems to enhance keyboard –and cymbals above everything else giving the impression it may be added on! Not saying it;s the case -just sounds 'different'. There is no sign of Mike's Bass guitar.
Still your upload is appreciated for sure. For those who talk of Peter Gabriel's 'weird' hair if I'm not mistaken he's 'made up' to appear as 'Rael' the character whom the whole story on ‘The Lamb..' is about.
@soundspur Those aren't "cymbals" which r part of a drum kit. That is a tambourine. and the keyboards are fine if anything you are getting a bit too much of peters vocals.
@MaximillianZakes Video games are for children and those who refuse to grow up. But thanks anyway for trying to enlighten me. I have zero interest in wasting my time playing video rubbish.
